'Piano Man' plays for refugees at Polish border

Ukrainian refugees entering Poland were met with a bit of relief on Thursday (Mar. 3), as they were greeted by a piano man playing music at the border crossing.

A video uploaded by Reuters showed the musician, named Davide Martello, who traveled all the way from Germany to bring some joy to the refugees amid the crisis. The clip shows Martello playing for refugees, as a few of them sat down to chat and play with him.

The piano, which seems to be attached to a bicycle, has a poignant peace sign painted on top. Since the ruthless Russian invasion of the country, more than 1.2 million Ukrainian people have fled to neighboring countries, according to the U.N. refugee agency.

Over the weekend, Russia’s state communications watchdog has ordered to completely block access to Facebook in Russia amid the tensions over the war in Ukraine. The agency, Roskomnadzor, said Friday it decided to cut access to Facebook over its alleged “discrimination” of the Russian media and state information resources. It said the restrictions introduced by Facebook owner Meta on the RT and other state-controlled media violate the Russian law.

The move against Facebook follows the blocks imposed last week on a number of media publications, including the BBC, the U.S. government-funded Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, German broadcaster Deutsche Welle and Latvia-based website Meduza as the Russian government seeks to uproot independent sources of information about the invasion of Ukraine.
