Would Doctor Strange Actually Cast That Spell For Spider-Man? The Internet Has A Lot Of Thoughts

Recommended Posts

After months of waiting, the first trailer for Jon Watts' Spider-Man: No Way Home has finally arrived. The trailer is already breaking records, as the limited footage offers some answers, but inspires even more questions. Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange certainly made an impact during his appearance, although he's been the subject of much debate online. Namely, would Strange actually cast that spell for Peter Parker? And the internet has thoughts.

The first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home confirmed that the multiverse is in play, seemingly due to a spell gone awry by Doctor Strange. The footage shows him willing to make the entire world forget they know Peter Parker's superhero identity, before Tom Holland's characters starts interrupting him mid-spell. Some Marvel fans think this might be an alternate version of Strange entirely, posting on Twitter:

Well, my mind is blown. Clearly Phase Four and Five of the MCU are going to be focusing on the use of the multiverse. This should open a ton of narrative doors, but it'll also be fodder for countless fan theories. That includes the idea that Doctor Strange's spell was so out of character that it might have been variant all along. Is your head spinning yet?

The MCU has found its streaming home on Disney+. You can use this link to sign up for the streaming service.

The discourse around Spider-Man: No Way Home has been fascinating to watch, as there are also plenty of moviegoers who think Doctor Strange's spell is actually very much in character. After all, Benedict Cumberbatch's hero is known for have a massive ego. As journalist Alisha Grauso put it on social media:

This contrast in opinion is likely while Spider-Man: No Way Home's trailer already has over 40 million views at the time of writing this story. There's a ton to unpack from this limited footage, the least of which being Doctor Strange. Both Alfred Molina and Willem Dafoe are seemingly back as their signature villains, and fans are still left wondering about Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's rumored roles.

Aside from the debate about Doctor Strange's motivations during his big Spider-Man: No Way Home spell, some fans are surprised that the Sorcerer Supreme could even be distracted by the likes of Peter Parker. After all, he's an extremely powerful magic user with a genius level intellect. As one fan reacted,

Considering the events of Loki and WandaVision, there are countless theories about the multiverse. And with Spider-Man: No Way Home definitely going into that territory, fans are trying to connect the movie to those Disney+ shows. As such, some fans think that Doctor Strange's spell snafu occurs as similarly apocalyptic events happened on the small screen. Check it out below.

As is the case with every new Marvel release, the trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home was also fodder for countless memes across social media. Doctor Strange was the subject for much of these funny reactions, especially thanks to his interaction with Benedict Wong's character Wong. His fellow Sorcerer urges Strange NOT to do that spell... but we know how that worked out.

While footage for Spider-Man: No Way Home is limited, it's clear that the moviegoing public is very invested in what we've been shown. Luckily, Tom Holland's third solo flick is only a few months away. And as we get closer to its Holiday release, we should hopefully be treated to more trailers. Although smart money says there will still be plenty of more questions.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently set to arrive in theaters on December 17th. In the meantime, check out the 2021 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience.
