Microsoft Announces New Windows 10 Pro Education Version

Microsoft has just announced a new Windows 10 SKU that’s specifically aimed at schools looking to make the most of the new features bundled into the Anniversary Update.

Windows 10 Pro Education is a new version that’s based on Windows 10 Pro and comes with education-specific default settings, including the possibility of removing Cortana, while also disabling tips, tricks, suggestions, and Windows Store app recommendations.

Microsoft says that Windows 10 Pro Education will be shipped by default on devices that are purchased with discounted K-12 academic licenses from OEM partners, but only if version 1607 is pre-installed (this is the Anniversary Update version launching on August 2 for retail users).

“Existing devices running Windows 10 Pro, currently activated with the original OEM digital product key and purchased with discounted K-12 academic licenses through OEM partners (these discounted licenses are sometimes referred to as National Academic or Shape the Future), will upgrade automatically to Windows 10 Pro Education as part of the Windows 10, version 1607 installation,” Microsoft explains.

Windows 10 Education SKU still available

Additionally, the company states that customers who have already purchased Windows 10 Pro can configure their operating system to have the exact same capabilities and settings as Windows 10 Pro Education using policies, but additional work is required.

The standard Windows 10 Education SKU will continue to be available, but in this case, they’re based on Windows 10 Enterprise and additional tools are provided.

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update will launch on August 2 and will come with a long list of improvements, starting with extension support in Edge browser and ending with Windows Ink, a feature that allows the operating system to be used with a pen in a much more effective way.

The education sector is also getting tons of features that could come in handy to both teachers and students, and this is one of the reasons the company is launching a new SKU together with the Anniversary Update.
