The US supports Poland in opposing the Nord Stream-2 project, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said after meeting with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Moravetski.

According to him, Russia can "use the energy tool as a political tool." Tillerson added that the US will help Poland in its efforts to diversify sources of energy supplies - at the expense of American liquefied gas.

The head of the Polish Foreign Ministry, Jacek Chaputowicz, in turn, said that Poland had presented the US with critical arguments against "Nord Stream-2" as reinforcing "geopolitical tensions" in the region. "We will ask our American allies for support," he said.

The Nord Stream-2 project involves the construction of two strings of a gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas a year next to Nord Stream, from Russia's coast across the Baltic Sea to Germany. The project is opposed by some Eastern European countries, particularly Ukraine, which is afraid of losing revenues from the transit of Russian gas, as well as the US, which are promoting their own ambitious plans for LNG exports in Europe.
