Malaysia - Man fined RM6,000 for pirated DVDs

A trader was fined RM6,000 by the Selayang Magistrate's Court here today after pleading guilty to selling 40 copies of pirated DVDs, last October.

Liong Mun Kan, 35, admitted selling DVDs of various titles without the 'B' censorship certificate at the Petron petrol station at Bandar Country Homes, Rawang in Gombak here, at 4 pm on Oct 20.

The charge under Section 18(4) of the Film Censorship Act 2002 and punishable under Section 18(5) of the same act provides for a fine up to RM30,000 or imprisonment up to three years, or both, upon conviction.

Magistrate Iriane Isabelo ordered Liong to serve six months in jail should he fail to pay the fine. The trader settled the amount.

Deputy public prosecutor Ashwinii Thinakaran appeared for the prosecution, while Liong was unrepresented.
