Director Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi opus Blade Runner 2049 has earned a fresh rating with 94 reviews counted on Rotten Tomatoes. Set 30 years after director Ridley Scott’s sci-fi cult classic Blade Runner, fans will return to the dystopian world of Los Angeles in theaters this weekend as Villeneuve continues Scott’s tale that starred Harrison Ford, Sean Young and Rutger Hauer in 1982.

Ford reprises his role as Rick Deckard, who becomes embroiled in a mystery that a new Blade Runner, Officer K (Ryan Gosling), tries to unravel when sent on a sensitive mission to retire modern day replicants involved in a revolution that threatens the balance of power between the enslaved synthetics and their human superiors.

Following early positive reviews of Blade Runner 2049 last week from select critics, dozens of critics are starting to release their reviews of the film, and with 94 counted as of this writing, the film has already been certified “fresh” by the review aggregator. So far, 89 of the reviews have deemed the film “fresh” and only 5 “rotten,” resulting in a rating of 95 percent.

If the ratings percentage holds steady, that will put Blade Runner 2049 on par with such recent hits as Wonder Woman and Spider-Man: Homecoming, which each have ratings of 92 percent; and DunkirkWar for the Planet of the Apes and Baby Driver, which all have ratings of 93 percent. Get Out remains the highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes this year, with a 99 percent “fresh” rating, followed by The Big Sick with 98 percent.

All of the positive critical attention will likely alert Blade Runner 2049 studio Warner Bros. to consider putting the film in this year’s awards season race, along with its other commercial and critical hits, Dunkirk and Wonder Woman.

The film already seems to be drawing similarities to the awards season prospects enjoyed by another Warner Bros. dystopian action film, Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, which went on to earn 10 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director (for George Miller), and won six. Mad Max: Fury Road was also a major hit with critics, earning a 97 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Blade Runner 2049 far and away leads this weekend’s other releases in terms of favorable ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. The Kate Winslet and Idris Elba survival drama The Mountain Between Us currently has a “rotten” rating of 56 percent; while the Judi Dench period drama Victoria & Abdul is sitting at a 67 percent “fresh” rating. Reviews have not been counted yet for the animated family adventure My Little Pony: The Movie, so the film has no rating as of this writing.
