A new rumor provides potential plot and story details for Gambit, a spinoff of 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise. The film, which has Channing Tatum attached to star, has been in development limbo for years with some fans still holding out hope that the movie will eventually be made.

The Cajun mutant’s first live-action appearance came in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by Friday Night Lights and John Carter star Taylor Kitsch. It was announced in 2014 that Gambit would receive a solo movie with a release date of October 7, 2016; Tatum was set to star. However, certain delays caused fans to believe that the film had been put on the backburner. With Deadpool 2X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and New Mutants all on Fox’s slate for 2018, it appears that it may be a while before the studio can take time to focus on Gambit.

In August, Tatum said the Gambit movie was still in active development. A month later, Tatum confirmed that the script was being rewritten in order to follow the success of Deadpool and Logan. Now, Splash Report claims to have exclusive details on the new script, which sounds like a heist movie:

Remy Lebeau (Channing Tatum) is on trial in New Orleans. He’s considered a huge security risk. We flashback to almost 25 years before.

Master thief Luke Lebeau runs into eight-year-old Gambit while doing a heist. Impressed by his skills, he offers to take the mutant orphan under his wings. Raised alongside other strays he calls “cousins”, the teenage Gambit becomes the superstar of the Thief Guild. He encounters Bella Donna Boudreaux while on the run from the police. Sparks immediately fly since Bella is also a fellow mutant. Their love is directly prohibited by both families since the Boudreaux are sworn enemies of the Lebeau clan. Deciding to unite the two sides, Remy offers to have the two clans team up on a HUGE heist to profit both families. Of course, the whole plan goes awry, and in the chaos, Maryanne Boudreaux shoots and kill Luke Lebeau.

We jump to 10 years later; Gambit is hired to do a job in Paris to steal something from the Louvre Museum. It was apparently a test job to see if he still has it. His mysterious employer is revealed to be Nathaniel Essex a.k.a. Mr. Sinister. He offers Gambit 40 million to recover a mysterious trunk that was stolen by the Boudreaux clan. It will be auctioned off during the yearly Thieves Ball where all the criminal organizations in the world meet up. It uses New Orleans’ Mardi Gras celebrations as a cover. Gambit decides to enlist a crew of mutants to pull off this seemingly impossible heist…

According to Splash ReportGambit will feature numerous X-Men characters. The mutant will also recruit Dani Moonstar, Multiple Man, Rictor, and Fifolet to help them fight the classic X-Men villain. If Splash Report is to be believed, the film will also feature a cameo from a “blue X-Men regular.” Since the X-Men have three characters that fit that description (Beast, Nightcrawler, and Mystique) it’s not entirely clear which character this could be.

The rumor should be taken with an extremely large grain of salt, especially considering which characters are expected to appear, though a few do seem plausible. The rumor includes Bella Donna Boudreaux, whose role in the film is likely since Léa Seydoux was reportedly cast as the character in 2015. Mr. Sinister’s involvement in Gambit has also been hinted at after the villain was referenced in a post-credits scene in X-Men: Apocalypse. Multiple Man, played by Eric Dane, appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand, but like Gambit, this character can also be easily reimagined since he appeared prior to the franchise’s “reboot” in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Two other characters, however, are sure to raise eyebrows. Native American mutant Dani Moonstar will be played by Blu Hunt in New Mutants. Child actor Jayson Genao played Rictor in Logan. Will Gambit be able to incorporate all of these characters? To some fans, the plot and cast could sound more like an X-Men fan’s “dream movie” than anything that may actually happen.
