A new take on the Thor: Ragnarok trailer brings the movie’s stars and special effects back to the 1980s. From the reveal of the logo for Ragnarok, it was clear the film would evoke a certain ’80s aesthetic. In reality, however, the movie will jump around to various stylistic signposts, from Jack Kirby’s comic book style of the ’60s and ’70s, to the intergalactic side of the MCU seen in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Tying everything together will be Taika Waititi, who’s hoping his eccentric take on the God of Thunder will be the start of a new chapter for the hero.

As we inch closer to the release of Marvel’s third film of 2017, the marketing and press for Thor: Ragnarok has continued along. We’ve been treated to a new scene featuring Loki and fans can even get their hands on a toy version of Korg, the character Waititi will play in the movie. Of course, with anticipation high for the film, even fans are getting in on the promotion train.

Nerdist has just unveiled their version of the Thor: Ragnarok trailer, which imagines the movie set in the 1980s. While these types of fan trailers are exceedingly common, Nerdist has the time and resource to give theirs something extra. There’s cheesy voice-over, period-appropriate logos, and all of the big effects are slathered in some low-budget sheen to make them look more old school.

The trailer is so good, in fact, that Taika Waititi himself has already confessed his love for it on Twitter. Along with the great nods to the aesthetic of the ’80s, the video even throws in a few curveballs by featuring the TV version of the Hulk instead of the modern CGI character. There’s even a scene of him going toe-to-toe with what looks like an ’80s versions of Thor. And as the trailer wraps, a similar move is pulled with Jeff Goldblum, as footage of him from past films is subbed in for the Grandmaster.

As fans await the release of the next official trailer for Thor, this fun fan take should be a nice holdover. Similarly, more and more news has been pouring in regarding the film, helping to keep the excitement alive ahead of its release in November. Not only will Ragnarok tie into Avengers: Infinity War at the end, but the film will address where Hulk and Thor have been the past few years.
