Mary J. Blige finds it "surreal" that her music has saved people.

The 43-year-old singer has been open about her past struggle with alcohol and substance abuse, and her third album, 1997's Share My World, was penned at a time when she was trying to overcome her troubles.

She has since moved on and is stronger than ever, with an aim to help others in a similar situation.

"The most touching is when they say my music saved their lives. It's humbling. They literally tell me stories about almost committing suicide and then my song came on [the radio]," Mary told British magazine Stylist. "I've heard stories like: 'Your music saved my life, your music helped me decide to get a divorce. No More Drama helped me get out of an abusive relationship.' It's just 'wow'. It feels surreal."

As well as her inspirational lyrics, Mary often posts supportive quotes on social media, and is always encouraging others via her Instagram. When asked what advice she'd give to people who are unhappy with their lives, the songstress shared some wise words. 

"I was in my late 30s when I realised that I could rest in the fact that I am who I am, I have what I have and I'm not going to get another body. This is it!" she commented. "When you go through so much and you have some stress, you think your stress is going to change your situation but it doesn't. It just makes things worse. And once you understand that, you realise life is really what you make it."

When she does have some spare time on her hands, Mary enjoys kicking back and relaxing like everyone else. As well as escaping from reality by watching TV shows, the star enjoys reminding herself of how lucky she is.

"I like Scandal a lot and I just finished Suits, which I love. I also make sure to go see my mom and spend time with her. I like to read books that teach you how to be happy with the things you have. I'm reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho at the moment, which is so great," she added.
