Per Mertesacker’s style epitomised Arsenal’s lethargic display on Saturday. With 45 minutes to turn the game around, the Gunners rarely looked threatening and lacked urgency.

Performances haven’t been good enough and Arsene Wenger needs to rotate his team in order produce the right results on the field.

He also needs to create a team that plays at a quicker tempo, because Hull found it easy to keep the Gunners at bay for the most part of the second half.

Here’s five changes I think Arsenal should make for their midweek clash against Anderlecht.

1) Calum Chambers for Nacho Monreal

Monreal played at centre-back with Chambers suspended and Koscielny injured. Chambers must come back in for the Spaniard for this tricky away tie.

2) Mikel Arteta for Mathieu Flamini

Flamini has been up and down this season, but Arteta is the more talented midfielder for me. With the Spaniard back fit, he must come back into the starting XI to help freshen up the Arsenal team.

3) Damian Martinez for Woijcech Szczesny

This change is forced due to Szczesny’s suspension. It’s a real shame that David Ospina is injured for this game as I believe a good performance from the Colombian may have led to him getting more first team opportunities. There will be a lot of pressure on Martinez, but Wenger needs him to deliver.

4) Aaron Ramsey for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Chamberlain had a great chance to cement a place in the first team against Hull, but a poor performance showed Wenger he is not yet ready to become a regular. I would play Santi Cazorla on the wing and give Aaron Ramsey a central position alongside Jack Wilshere in a 4-1-4-1 formation. Wilshere and Ramsey back at the heart of the midfield will be key for Arsenal.

5) Laurent Koscielny for Per Mertesacker

I’m not sure if Koscielny will be fit for this game, but if he is he has to start alongside Chambers. Mertesacker has not been very impressive this season and many fans blame the German for the Gunners draw against Hull on Saturday. Dropping Mertesacker for a couple of games might force him to get back into his best form.

I’d start Bellerin again, he looked impressive against Hull. I’d also be careful about introducing Walcott back into a starting role for this game, but his pace could definetely be useful from the bench. Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez must start as they are two of few on form players for the Gunners at the moment.
