  1. Staff from four of the UK's most popular cinema chains have been given cash rewards for hindering the work of suspected movie pirates. Eleven individuals stepped in to interrupt nearly a dozen so-called 'camming' incidents on movies including Fifty Shades of Grey and The Theory of Everything. The interventions led to four arrests but things don't always go to plan. While the Internet provides an unrivaled distribution mechanism for illicit digital goods, cinemas themselves are often depicted as the front line against pre-release piracy. Just as the latest blockbusters air for the first time to an eager public, in their midst are individuals who aim to record movies and place them online for the enjoyment of others. And even as discerning consumers seek out pristine high-definition content, third-rate ‘cammed’ copies of movies are still gobbled up online. In an effort to mitigate the number of titles that end up on the Internet from UK sources, the Hollywood-funded Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) promotes the Take Action initiative. In place since 2006, this anti-piracy scheme is funded by UK film distributors via the Film Distributors’ Association (FDA) and encourages local cinema staff to catch ‘cammers’ in the act. In its latest report, FACT says that staff from four of the UK’s largest cinema chains – Cineworld, Odeon, Vue and Showcase cinemas – stepped in during the past six months to interrupt those suspected of recording movies including The Hunger Games, Fifty Shades of Grey and The Theory of Everything. In all 11 cinema employees were involved in a total of 11 incidents. Police reportedly attended on all occasions, leading to four cautions and three arrests. cambustersFor their efforts the cinema staff pictured right were invited to a ceremony hosted by Universal Pictures where they were presented with certificates and cash rewards. The precise amounts aren’t being released but for the period the maximum is £500 per person. However, FACT now reports that for a limited time more money is on the table. Any cinema staff who prevent and report unauthorized recording between 20th April and 30th June 2015 can expect to get paid a maximum of £1000. “FACT’s strategy, funded by the film distributors and put into action by cinema staff across the UK, seeks to identify and prevent the initial recording that seeds piracy globally,†says FACT Director General Kieron Sharp. “We continue to work together with UK cinema operators to support the success of the cinema experience and to allow continued investment by FACT’s members in exciting entertainment for all audiences.†Despite the successes, the number of incidents in the current reporting period is up on the previous set of figures published last year. Stats released in September 2014 reveal that there were seven “incidentsâ€, all of which were attended by the police. In five incidents the alleged cammers accepted police cautions, with just one incident leading to an arrest. Nine cinema staff picked up rewards. During the reporting period April 2013 to December 2013, a dozen alleged cammers of major movies were spotted in UK cinemas resulting in five arrests but no prosecutions. A total of 15 cinema workers picked up rewards. Although groups like FACT have a vested interest in publicizing the negative fates of alleged cammers, those with less than favorable outcomes are largely avoided. The most recent involved the November 2013 arrest and early 2014 trial of a man accused of attempting the world’s first in-cinema 3D recording of the movie Gravity. It didn’t go well. The case fell apart, with the judge commenting that “It ought to have been absolutely clear there was no legal basis for it.†Although the defendant, a Birmingham-based student, did enter a cinema with camera equipment, he did not record a moment of the film. Nevertheless, he was reported by cinema staff who called in the police. It’s not clear whether any reward was paid in that case. Also of interest is a December 2014 incident when staff at a Cineworld cinema dialed the national 999 emergency number after spotting a group of 12-year-old girls with iPhones and iPads at a showing of The Hunger Games, a movie mentioned in the most current rewards report. After a police search at the scene turned up nothing incriminating the girls were allowed back in. However, the teens waited outside, reportedly in tears, until their parents came to pick them up. It is not clear whether any cinema staff were given a reward for this incident either. While a little extra cash will no doubt be welcomed by some cinema staff and effective hindering of real pirates greatly appreciated by the studios, there is always a risk that the money available will cloud judgement. Nevertheless, police seem ever more willing to get involved. Documents previously obtained by TorrentFreak revealed that in 2008 there were 50 UK camming incidents, with police attending on just two occasions. If current figures are to be believed, in today’s climate they are almost guaranteed to respond. https://torrentfreak.com/cinema-staff-catch-movie-cammers-pick-up-cash-rewards-150423/

  4. Azureus Software has released a brand new version of its Vuze client which allows users to merge swarms. The swarm merging feature can increase the number of download sources, bringing dead torrents to life and speeding up others. Vuze is one of the most recognized BitTorrent brands. The client is used by millions of people each day and has a steadily growing user-base. In recent years Vuze’s BitTorrent client has evolved into an all-in-one download solution, with built-in search, DVD-burning capabilities and device integration While it’s certainly not the most lightweight client around, Vuze has some interesting options for more demanding BitTorrent users. With the latest 5.6 release the new “swarm merging†feature stands out. The new feature allows users to find duplicate files shared elsewhere via BitTorrent, and combines the seeds and peers from multiple sources. “Vuze automatically detects when two or more of your incomplete downloads share one or more files of identical size and will attempt to merge the torrent swarms to download the file faster or, possibly, complete an existing file with bad availability,†Vuze explains. For example, if you download a copy of LibreOffice, Vuze can search for torrents that have the same files and combine these swarms. This is particularly useful when a torrent has no seeds or very few active ones. Below is a screenshot of one download being pulled from two swarms. In this case it’s downloading 1.2MB per second from the original torrent and an additional 1.0MB per second from the merged swarm. A merged swarm The merging feature makes use of Vuze’s swarm discovery tool and finds files through the Distributed Hash Table (DHT). It’s relatively primitive and based on file-sizes, but can be a life-safer nonetheless. Another new feature that’s worth mentioning is improved support for the anonymous I2P network. While not mentioned in the official 5.6 release announcement, users who download a torrent with an I2P tracker are now prompted to install the corresponding plugin. I2P plug This I2P plug will likely increase the number of users on the network, increasing the download speeds as well. Vuze believes that it makes sense to support I2P as many of its users are interested in communicating anonymously. “I2P is used by many people who care about their privacy: activists, journalists, as well as the average person. The Vuze user can fall into all of these categories,†a Vuze spokesperson informs TF. The latest stable release of Vuze for Mac, Linux and Windows is available at the official website. More details on the swarm merging feature can be found in the Vuze wiki. https://torrentfreak.com/vuze-speeds-up-torrent-downloads-through-swarm-merging-150320/

  7. The Pirate Bay has been back online for more than two weeks but thus far it's been rough sailing. The notorious torrent site has had to jump from hosting service to hosting service just to stay online and is still looking for a safe haven. At the same time, scammers keep hounding the site with fake files and malicious links. Two weeks ago The Pirate Bay returned online and millions of users have been finding their way back to the popular torrent site since. While the site is currently up and running, Pirate Bay’s comeback hasn’t been without trouble. On Friday the site went offline for roughly 12 hours after a hosting provider pulled the plug. TF reached out to Pirate Bay admin Winston, who informed us that “getting stable hosting†is one of the main challenges the site faces at the moment. TPB is currently using CloudFlare’s CDN services which means that the hosting location is well hidden. However, Cloudflare does forward takedown notices to hosting providers and most are not very eager to have TPB as a customer. The site continues to look for a safe alternative but that is proving to be a troublesome process. When we discussed the topic with the site’s admin TPB went offline again, causing yet more downtime. “Another ISP killed it,†Winston told us yesterday. “So yeah. It will take a long time until it’s stable.†While the hosting issue has priority, there’s also a spam problem TPB has to deal with. Despite deploying “FakeSkan†robots there are still many scammy comments and malicious torrents on the site. The Pirate Bay initially launched without moderators due to security concerns. This resulted in a mutiny among TPB staff, some of whom wanted to start their own version of the site. While the locked-out staffers managed to revive a copy of the Suprbay forum a few days ago, launching a TPB alternative will prove to be much harder. Winston now says that TPB is open to welcoming some of the old staffers back in the near future. “After hosting issues are resolved I’ll talk to some old mods,†Winston tells us. “If they want to continue then it’s okay, but I won’t look for new mods. Someone from the old team will have to be in charge of that.†After the initial disappointment of being locked out, several admins are indeed showing willingness to return to their former home. “The conditions do not need to change from our side,†long time TPB moderator Agricola told TF. “All we want to do is keep the site clean.†In addition to dealing with the pollution problem, TPB registrations should also open up again in the future. At the moment new users are unable to sign-up and publish content. “There are just some security issues that have to be resolved first,†Winston says. “Plus, the hosting has to be stable.†Speaking of hosting, a few hours before this article was published The Pirate Bay was forced to leave another ISP. That brings the total to four thus far, and the end is not yet in sight. http://torrentfreak.com/pirate-bay-caught-up-in-a-hosting-whac-a-mole-150217/

  9. Simon Cowell is reportedly 'loved up' in Barbados with Lauren Silverman. The X Factor boss, who welcomed his first son, Eric, with the American socialite earlier this year, recently jet to the Caribbean island, according to MailOnline. Photos of the couple published by the outlet show Simon and Lauren strolling along the beach while holding hands. The couple will reportedly be joined by the host of X Factor spin-off The Xtra Factor, Sarah-Jane Crawford, and her boyfriend Ross Harland, according to UK newspaper The Sun. The English TV and radio presenter is said to be 'really excited and honoured' by the invitation. 'While the entire X Factor gang get on well, she received an invite ahead of Dermot O'Leary and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini so she has to be in his good books,' a source told the outlet. 'She'll certainly be expecting to keep her Xtra Factor role for next year's series - if the holiday goes smoothly that is.' It's said to be a star-studded affair, with Rihanna, who is from the island, as well as Sir Philip Green spending time in the area during the holidays. Lauren and Simon, who welcomed baby Eric on Valentine's Day, are meanwhile planning to expand their family in the future, according to the socialite. 'We'll definitely have more children,' Lauren told UK newspaper The Mirror back in May, gushing that Simon is an 'amazing' dad. 'I would like one more, I think it will be a girl, Simon wants a girl very badly,' she added. Simon has also spoken about the joys of being a father, echoing Lauren's sentiments about feeling 'blessed' Eric is healthy. Asked if he had realised how fortunate his family is, he recently told British magazine Hello!: 'Of course. You feel blessed and luckily he's in good health. It did put things into a different perspective."
  10. Billboard caught up with Jason Derulo - who recently broke up with longtime girlfriend Jordan Sparks - to talk about his most recent hit and how his break-up is affecting his songwriting. When asked about using his breakup with Sparks for inspiration for new music, Derulo admitted: "Oh, 100 percent. I'm somebody who cannot keep those two things separate. Like, I have to put it on paper, put it on wax, put it in my songs. I cannot separate the two. My creativity, my personality won't allow me to separate the two. If that's what's going on in my life, that's in the songs I make as well. It's definitely a piece of that." Add Rep and Leave a feedback Reputation is the green button in the down right corner on my post
  11. NewEgg offering quite a nice deal right now on Sony's latest console through eBay. Online retailer NewEgg is currently selling PlayStation 4s on auction site eBay for $360, representing a nice savings of $40 over the console's normal $400 asking price. Shipping is free. According to the page, only a "limited quantity" of PS4 units at the discounted price are available. More than 400 have been sold since the promotion went live. The deal ends on Monday, October 27, or presumably when stock runs out. NewEgg's special PS4 deal is for the standard black console, not the white Destiny bundle. You're buying a brand-new PS4, which comes with the system, a DualShock 4 controller, an HDMI cable, a mono headset, and all power and charging cables. The PS4 celebrates its first birthday next month. The system has sold more than 10 million systemsworldwide as of August, which is beyond Sony's expectations for the console. Most recently, the NPD Group announced last week that the PS4 maintained its lead over the Xbox One in the United States during September. 15. Millennium Films is cashing in on the leak of The Expendables 3 by demanding cash settlements from alleged downloaders. Those receiving notices are only being given until October 5 to pay up - or else - but demands to users of VPNs are falling on deaf ears. Sadly, those using IP blocking software have had much less luck. Back in July a pretty much pristine copy of The Expendables 3 leaked online. It was a dramatic event for those behind the production as the movie’s premier on BitTorrent networks trumped its theatrical debut by several weeks. Distributor Lionsgate was quick to react. Just days after the leak the entertainment company sued several file-sharing sites, which eventually resulted in the closure of file-hosting site Hulkfile. But more action was yet to come. Doubling up on their efforts, Lionsgate also targeted hosting providers, domain registrars and seedboxes while at the same time sending thousands of DMCA takedown notices to have content and links to content removed. However, a big question remained unanswered. Would the makers of The Expendables 3 start tracking down alleged file-sharers to force them into cash settlements as happened with previous iterations of the movie? It’s taken a few weeks but confirmation is now in. Millennium Films, the production company behind The Expendables 3, is now shaking down individual Internet users they believe to have downloaded and shared the leaked movie without permission. What do they want? Hard cash, of course. Interestingly, and at least for now, the company isn’t going through the courts filing subpoenas against ISPs to obtain downloaders’ personal details. In a switch of tactics the company is sending DMCA takedown notices to ISPs via CEG TEK International and requesting that the notices are forwarded to the customers in question instead. In addition to the usual cease and desist terminology, Millennium tag on cash settlements demands too. As can be seen in the image above, the production company is giving notice recipients until October 5, 2014 to come up with the money – or else. “If within the prescribed time period described above you fail to (i) respond or settle, or (ii) provide by email to support@cegtek.com written evidence of your having consent or permission from Millennium Films to use the Work in connection with Peer-to-Peer networks (note that fraudulent submissions may give rise to additional liabilities), the above matter may be referred to attorneys representing the Work’s owner for legal action,†the settlement offer reads. Of course, whether people fill in CEG TEK’s settlement form or write to them with their personal details, the end result will be the same. The company will now have the person’s identity, something they didn’t previously have since at this stage ISPs have only forwarded the notices. While the notices are real (CEG TEK have confirmed the action) little is known about how much money Millenium/CEG TEK are demanding to make a supposed lawsuit go away. However, TorrentFreak has learned that CEG TEK are simultaneously sending out settlement demands to alleged downloaders of The Expendables 2. A copy of the settlement page demand – $300 – is shown below. While some people will no doubt be worrying about how to deal with these demands and whether Millenium will follow through on its implied threat to sue, at least some of these notices will be falling on deaf ears. LiquidVPN, an anonymity company listed in our 2014 report, received one such notice but as a no-log provider, could not forward it to its customer. Compare that to the despair of a user posting on KickassTorrents who got caught after relying on IP address blocking software (typos etc corrected). “I woke up to this alongside four other notices from my ISP. I stopped downloading six days ago, but I’m receiving old notices about movies that were downloaded a month ago and I basically can’t do nothing about it since its old. I use PeerBlock and it’s a bunch of bullshit. What should I do with this October 5 deadline on a settlement? Please help!†he wrote. Finally, and as Lionsgate, Millennium Films and CEG TEK shake down sites, hosting services, domain registrars, seedbox providers and now end users, the big mystery surrounding the most important questions remain unanswered. Who – at Lionsgate, Millennium or one of its partners – had full access to a clean DVD copy of the movie? Who then put that copy in a position of being placed online? The FBI, who can crack the most complex of terrorist crimes, are reportedly involved and must’ve asked these questions. Yet the culprit still hasn’t been found…… Could it be that studios become less cooperative when blame falls too close to home? http://torrentfreak.com/expendables-...r-else-140918/

Yet the culprit still hasn’t been found…… Could it be that studios become less cooperative when blame falls too close to home? http://torrentfreak.com/expendables-3-downloaders-told-to-pay-up-or-else-140918/
  17. The Vacation reboot cast continues to grow; a remake ofLaura is in the works; Triple Nine and Magic Mike 2 get new release dates; and Simon Pegg’s Kill Me Three Timesgets a motion poster. - The forthcoming reboot of National Lampoon’s Vacationhas added a few more to its cast. Chris Hemsworth and Charlie Day are reportedly in talks to join the film, which features Clark Griswold’s son Rusty setting off on a family road trip of his own. Ed Helms has already been cast as Rusty and Christina Applegatewill be playing his wife. If he’s cast, Hemsworth will play Stone Crandall, a local anchorman and the husband to Rusty’s sister Audrey. Day will play a river rafting guide. Vacation has also found Rusty Griswold’s two sons in Skyler Gisondo and Steele Stebbins. They will play the two unfortunate souls that Rusty drags across the country to the fictional theme park Walley World. Source: Variety (1) (2) - Fox has hired author James Ellroy (Black Dahlia, L.A. Confidential) to pen a remake of the noir thriller Laura. Although Ellroy has seen many of his novels adapted into feature films, this will be a rare appearance for the author as a screenwriter. It also couldn’t be a more perfect film for him to adapt. Originally released in 1944, Laura follows an NYPD detective Mark McPherson as he investigates the murder of a successful ad executive. However, in true noir fashion, the story starts to take some dark and mysterious turns the deeper McPherson goes. Source: THR - Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Triple Nine has secured September 11, 2015 for its release date. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Casey Affleck, Anthony Mackie, Woody Harrelson, and Aaron Paul, just to name a few. Its story follows a group of dirty cops forced to call in a ’999,’ or the police code for “officer down,†so as to rob a bank.John Hillcoat (The Road) will direct. In other release date news, Channing Tatum’s Magic Mike 2 (aka Magic Mike XXL) has moved from a July 3rd, 2015 release date to July 1st. Clearly Tatum & Co. want to get a bigger head start on the 4th of July holiday with some fireworks of their own. Source: Box Office Mojo, Variety - The Simon Pegg thriller Kill Me Three Times has unveiled a cool new motion poster, which you can check out below. The film casts Pegg as Charlie Wolfe, an assassin hired to kill a young woman in the Australian surfing town of Eagle’s Nest. However, Pegg’s character soon finds himself in well over his head when he discovers the woman is a common thread in three different crimes. Kill Me Three Times is screening at this year’s Telluride Film Festival, but does not currently have a domestic release date. http://screenrant.com/vacation-hemsworth-day-magic-mike-2-release-date/

  24. A few months back, we told you that a TV series based on the horror classic The Omen was in development at Lifetime. Well, the network today delivered the following verdict on the potential series: Lifetime is all for you Damien, it’s all for you! After years of being primarily known for their endless onslaught of trashy telefilms about such harrowing topics as internet porn addiction, Lifetime has apparently gone over to the dark side. If only they had known the power of it this whole time. Developed for the screen by former Walking Deadshowrunner Glen Mazzarra, Damien will function as both a continuity reboot and a sort-of sequel to the original Omenfilm, and will focus on the young Antichrist’s full realization of his dark powers and evil destiny as he enters adulthood. This approach effectively retcons the two theatrical sequels to The Omen, although neither of those films – one of which featured a pre-fame Sam Neill as the adult incarnation of Damien – ever came close to the popularity of the original. Damien’s first season will be a short one, as Lifetime has only ordered six episodes for the series’ inaugural batch. That’s a pretty low number, even for a cable series, making it likely that Lifetime wants to test the waters of the idea before jumping into the deep end with a full 13-16 episode order. The current plan is to air Damien’sdebut season in early 2015, although no specific date has been determined. Creatively, focusing on an adult Damien is probably the smartest route to travel for this new project, as any new child Damien would endlessly be compared to Harvey Stephens’ sinister performance in the original 1976 film. For evidence of that theory, look no further than the poorly regarded 2006 remake of The Omen, which featured a Damien that seemed almost precocious when compared to Stephens’ kid from hell. Done almost shot-for-shot, The Omen remake proved the futility of trying to tell the classic tale of the Thorn family over again, and Mazzara likely took this to heart when formulating the plotline for Damien’s small-screen transition. The casting of Damien himself will be absolutely crucial to the success of this venture, as the character will require a tight-rope walk between protagonist and antagonist. Damien can’t really be 100% demonic evil, as audiences might end up being turned off by the idea of following the rise of a man who wants to effectively end the world. TV has certainly come to accept the concept of the deeply flawed anti-hero in recent years, but even bastards like Walter White, Frank Underwood, and Vic Mackey had people they cared about – and moments that humanized them. For viewers to truly connect and empathize with Damien, he will need to be internally conflicted, and have friends whose lives he actually values. Not just any actor will be able to make us feel literal sympathy for the devil. One aspect of The Omen that Damien hopefully doesn’t change is Jerry Goldsmith’s iconic, haunting main theme “Ave Sataniâ€. There is a reason that music has become just as synonymous with dread and horror as The Exorcist‘s infamous “Tubular Bells†track. Of course, “Ave Satani†or no, there are roughly a million ways this series could go wrong. Hopefully Damien’s TV show doesn’t end up as cursed as the sets of his films supposedly were. Damien is expected to premiere on Lifetime in early 2015. http://screenrant.com/omen-tv-series-damien-lifetime/
  25. After a delay and a tumultuous series of headlines surrounding the departure of Ant-Man director and writer Edgar Wright and the rushed search for a director and writers to take his place at the last minute, production of Marvel’s next superhero origin story is back on track. Ant-Man begin shooting yesterday in San Francisco and today we already have our first official photo from the shoot. Disney and Marvel Studios just sent out the first official still which features star Paul Rudd, not suited up in the Ant-Man costume quiet yet, but also not dressed as his usual clean cut, handsome self either. Hoodie up with battered face, black gloves and a leather bag, Rudd plays Scott Lang in Ant-Man and is an underdog – the person you’d least expect to take on the responsibilities of being a hero and putting himself in danger to save the world, let alone being recruited as a member of The Avengers. Paul Rudd as Scott Lang in ‘Ant-Man’ He’s an ex-con and a thief and the image above hints that he may be in the act of delivering stolen goods. In the comics Lang was a thief, doing wrong for (mostly) the right reasons, first to support his family financially, later to save the life of his daughter. We don’t quite yet know the details on Lang’s character in the adaptation but in the books, he’s also an electronics expert which makes him quite well-suited to master the high-tech suit and bypass security systems. We do know that Ant-Man is a high-tech heist film with a strong focus on the mentor-mentee relationship between Michael Douglas’s character, Hank Pym, and Rudd’s Scott Lang. Pym is the original Ant-Man in the comics and creator of the size-altering tech, and we’ve long heard of Wright’s ideas (back when he was writing the screenplay) to have a small portion of the film take place in the ’60s with a young Pym working as an agent during the Cuban missile crisis. Given the recent casting of John Slattery to play Howard Stark again after playing him in Iron Man 2 (along with other potentially spoilery details), and that seems to still be the case. Official Ant-Man synopsis: Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. Excited to see Paul Rudd join the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Ant-Man is directed by Peyton Reed and stars Paul Rudd, Corey Stoll, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, John Slattery, Judy Greer, Michael Peña, Bobby Cannavale, David Dastmalchian and T.I.. The Avengers: Age of Ultron releases on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on July 17, 2015, Captain America 3 on May 6 2016, and unannounced films for July 8 2016 and May 5 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on July 28 2017, November 3 2017, May 4 2018, July 6 2018, November 2 2018 and May 3 2019. http://screenrant.com/ant-man-first-official-photo-paul-rudd/
