  9. H&R Rule Due to excessive hit and runs happening in the past weeks, we have added a hit and run rule: Hit and run on new torrents is not allowed. If you download a torrent when it is less than 24 hours old AND has less than 15 seeders, you must seed it for at least 24 consecutive hours immediately after completing the torrent. What this means is that if you can't seed for 24 hours after downloading, you should wait until the torrent is at least 24 hours old and already has 15 or more people seeding.
  10. Two-week sale offers discounted prices for non-PlayStation Plus members and Plus members alike. With Halloween less than two weeks away, Sony is kicking off a Halloween-themed sale on the PlayStation Store today that discounts a variety of games for PS3, PS4, PSP, and PS Vita. Everyone can receive the basic sale prices on these games, though if you're a PlayStation Plus member, you'll save even more. The sale is split across two weeks; some games will go on sale for one week beginning today, with others being discounted next Tuesday, October 28. Some of these games are the scary sort, like Outlast andFatal Frame, while others simply contain zombies or other marginally Halloween-y things, like Plants vs. Zombies and Guacamelee. This week with Plus, you're looking at getting Dead Space 2 for $4, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare for $15 (PS3) or $20 (PS4), and the first three Fatal Frame games on PS3 for $5 each. Next week things get even better, with Plus members getting Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for $4, Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare (with its very entertaining co-op mode) for $7, and Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack for $3. Amusingly, the promotional image for the sale (right) appears to have the same font as upcoming Xbox Oneexclusive Sunset Overdrive--something that the game's Twitter account made note of. Check out the full list of sale prices below. 18. Dark Knight trilogy and Inception director Christopher Nolan has never failed to think big (nor balked at ambitious ventures), but his upcoming film Interstellar - based on a script that was co-written by his brother, Jonathan, and informed by the space travel theories of astrophysicist Kip Thorne – looks as though it has the potential to be his most impressive creation to date, judging by the latest trailer. The project remains largely hidden away behind a curtain ahead of its theatrical debut (as all Nolan productions have been for years now), but it’s been revealed that the film’s story revolves around a pilot named Cooper (Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey) who undertakes a far-reaching space mission – a journey that represents a last ditch effort to save humanity from extinction, in the wake of a global ecological collapse on Earth. Nolan and McConaughey premiered the latest Interstellar trailer at the San Diego Comic-Con last week (read our recap of the film’s panel), but it is now online for everyone else to watch (see the top of this article). It was originally available to be unlocked via the official Interstellar website, by entering the code 7201969 (which represents the date of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, on July 20, 1969). Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey was cited as being a heavy influence on Interstellar by Nolan, when he spoke during the film’s Comic-Con panel. The movie’s latest trailer suggest just as much, in terms of just the sheer scale and grand cosmic imagery on display. (How cool is that final shot of a foreign planet going to look in IMAX, right?) Of course, as is true for all of Nolan’s films, the impressive spectacle has a very intimate emotional core: a story of a father, who just wants his children to feel safe and not dread what tomorrow may bring. There’s a meta element to the proceedings as well, seeing how Nolan is someone who remains optimistic about cinema’s future (read his essay on the subject), and the parallels between the filmmaking industry and the setting from Interstellar are readily apparent, metaphorically speaking. Combine all that with a great cast - one that includes Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, and (of course) Michael Caine, among others – and there seems to be a pretty good chance that Interstellar will prove to be a true modern sci-fi classic. Interstellar opens in U.S. theaters on November 7th, 2014.

  21. Root out duplicate files to reclaim precious hard-drive space on your Mac. One of the chief culprits behind a slow Mac is a cluttered hard drive. If your Mac's hard drive is nearing capacity, it's time to take action. I have offered a handful of tips about how to clean and speed up your Mac, but here's another: Mac app Duplicate Zapper. Duplicate Zapper is currently discounted at $1.99 as part of $2 Tuesday in the US (£1.49 in the UK and AU$2.49 in Australia). Once installed, the app offers six sliders to narrow your duplicate hunt. Because I like to think I keep my music, movies, and pictures in some semblance of order, I chose three types: Folders, Archives, and Documents. Next, Duplicate Zapper asks you to name locations to include and exclude from your search. I simply selected my Macintosh HD so it would scan everything. When you have your locations set, click the big green Scan button and Duplicate Zapper will begin its scan. It took about 12 minutes to scan my hard drive. When it finishes the scan, the app shows you a list of duplicates it found. Next to each file in the list are two numbers: the number on the right is the total number of copies found, and the number on the left is the number you have selected to delete. You can manually select each file on the list and then check out a preview of each of the copies to verify that they are, indeed, duplicates. If you hover over a file in the right panel, you can view its location, and clicking on the magnifying-glass icon opens Finder. Going manually through the list, file by file, can be time consuming. Thankfully, Duplicate Zapper offers a number of preset selections. From the drop-down menu at the top labeled Auto Select, you can choose to a method for choosing which files to keep and which to trash. Your choices include keeping the earliest files, keeping the latest files, keep those with the shortest or longest path, or keeping the originals. Below the Auto Select options is a drop-down menu for sorting your list of files. With my first scan, I reclaimed 1.55GB of hard drive space. Not bad for roughly 15 minutes of work. The developer states on the app's page in the Mac App Store that Duplicate Zapper "will never scan important system or application files, ensuring your Mac stays safe."

  23. This week's most exciting news in technology was undoubtedly that Tesla Cars declares that all their patent monopolies are free for anyone to use. What does it mean? Let's compare to BitTorrent. When Bram Cohen created the BitTorrent protocol, he had the legal option of filing for a patent monopoly on any computer program that used this protocol. (The mere existence of such an option is a very bad thing, but we’ll be returning to that.) Mr. Cohen chose to not monopolize the BitTorrent protocol in that way. Let’s examine what implications that would have had for the technology. If the BitTorrent technology would have been protected by patent monopolies, it would have been effectively limited to Mr. Cohen’s original BitTorrent client. Have you used that client? Do you know anybody who has used it? Didn’t think so, and neither do I. Instead, there is an enormous plethora of clients and servers that use the protocol today, and Mr. Cohen’s BitTorrent Inc. is valued at eight-digit dollars. Not to mention the fact that BitTorrent Inc. was subsequently able to buy one of the most prolific BitTorrent clients out there, µTorrent, which would not have existed had the technology been monopolized in the first place. I think most of us have used µTorrent – I know I have. This shows exactly why it makes so much sense for Tesla Cars to release all of their patent monopolies into the wild, and why the patent monopoly system as such is enormously harmful (the only industry to make a net profit from it is the pharma industry, and that’s because they’re heavily subsidized with taxpayer money). Tesla Cars relinquishing their monopolies means they see this mechanism, and that they realize they need an ecosystem to flourish around their technology – the electric car technology – in order to remain viable themselves. Put another way, it’s not about the size of the pie slice: monopolies are preventing the pie itself from growing exponentially, as they do with any new technology poised to disrupt the old ways. Just like BitTorrent. Patent monopolies are far worse than the copyright monopolies we deal with (and all break) on a daily basis. Imagine for a moment if copyright monopoly vultures didn’t care if you had made an actual copy, that you would be just as guilty of infringement even if you had never seen or heard of the original? That’s how patent monopolies work, and that’s the key difference between patent monopolies and copyright monopolies: the latter protect a specific expression against copying, the former protect an idea or a form from being utilized anywhere, even independently. It’s also why patent monopolies are much, much more harmful than copyright monopolies (and that’s saying a lot). But as the Tesla example shows, patent monopolies don’t stop at not making sense as a whole. They also don’t make sense to a single company in isolation, as they prevent an ecosystem taking shape. It’s one of the worst cancers in the economy, as investors describe them today. It’s easy to argue that patent monopolies don’t hit ordinary families in the same way that copyright monopolies, that patent monopolies have not sued families out of their homes merely for taking part in society’s culture. But that’s about to change with 3D printing, where rapid fabrication becomes available to the masses. It is – unfortunately – a safe prediction that people will soon be sued out of their homes merely for manufacturing their own pair of slippers, because it violated a design patent monopoly somewhere. Such a notion may seem ridiculous today. Then again, so did everything else we’ve seen with the copyright monopoly so far, and patent monopolies are guarded far more harshly. The BitTorrent legacy doesn’t just show us how to break the copyright monopoly in a specific case. It gives us a blueprint for how to disrupt old ways in general by ditching legal monopolies, a blueprint that Tesla Cars is now choosing to follow. The patent monopoly wars are coming, right on the heels of the copyright monopoly wars, as were they merely a logical extension. That’s why it’s so encouraging to see our tip-of-the-spear entrepreneurs denouncing and releasing their own monopolies right ahead of these battles with corporate lawyers. As a final note, it’s noteworthy that Tesla Cars isn’t the only company that Elon Musk is running. He’s also at the helm of SpaceX. Space technology has been ridiculously proprietary up until now, nothing cooperating with anything else and everything being custom-built single-use. That’s why it makes me enormously excited to see an entrepreneur who understands the damages of monopolies at the forefront of space technology today. It holds a promise of standardized, interoperable space technology. As in, “for all of usâ€. Like BitTorrent.
