  1. Graphics process AMD celebrated its thirtieth anniversary yesterday, and the company decided to inaugurate a new graphics processor chip that would offer the kind of power that hardcore gamers desire. To this end, AMD introduced the new Radeon R9 285 GPU that offers excellent specs for a more affordable price. The Radeon R9 285 graphics processor, built from 28nm GPU architecture, features 1,792 stream processors, 3.92 teraflops (or TFLOPS) of compute performance, 112 texture units, 32 ROPs, 128 Z/Stencil, 256-bit memory, 2GBs of DDR5 memory, two 6-pin power connectors, 190 watts of typical board power, DirectX 12 and Mantle support, utilizes the PCI-Express (or PCI-E) 3.0 standard, and has a memory speed of 5.5 gigabits per second (Gbps) with a clocked engine speed of 918Mhz. While the current R9 285 graphics processor comes with 2GBs of memory, AMD says that it looks to produce a 4GB DDR5 memory model at some point in the near future. As far as how AMD’s new Radeon R9 285 stacks up against AMD’s other graphics processors, the R9 285 matches the R9 280 in terms of stream processors, but offers smaller memory bandwidth and a slower clocked speed than any graphics processor AMD currently offers. You also sacrifice the DDR5 memory, seeing that AMD’s first Radeon R9 285 out of the gate will only have 2GB – not even the 3GB or 4GB of DDR5 memory that would help the new processor compete with AMD’s older products. AMD’s newest graphics chip sits between the 2GB R9 270/R9 270X graphics chip ($179, $199) and the 3GB R9 280X ($399) graphics chip, so it’ll provide a budget-friendly option for those looking for a gaming-intensive graphics card that won’t sacrifice a stellar, mind-blowing on-screen experience for a shocking price tag. The new Radeon R9 285 graphics processor will ship on September 2, and to encourage sales for its newest GPU, AMD is offering a “Never Settle: Space Edition†bundle that includes the games “Alien Invasion†and access to the development process for the “Star Citizen†game along with a ship gaming toy.
  2. The U.S Department of Justice has accused a 28-year-old Dutchman of stealing pre-release digital copies of the Hollywood blockbusters “How Do You Know,†"Rango" and “Megamind.†The indictment comes on the heels of the Sony hack, which prompted Hollywood to demand tougher cybersecurity laws. Year in and year out dozens of movies leak online, some long before they are set to appear in theaters. These pre-release leaks are of great concern to Hollywood and the cases often see the FBI become involved. But despite law enforcement’s best efforts the leakers are seldom identified. This week, however, a federal grand jury in Los Angeles indicted Dutch resident Joey Vogelaar for unlawfully obtaining three Hollywood movies back in November 2010. The now 28-year-old from Delft allegedly accessed the Sony Pictures Entertainment film “How Do You Know,†Paramount’s “Rango†and the Dreamworks movie “Megamind,†all of which were unreleased at the time. A copy of the indictment obtained by TF (pdf) shows that Vogelaar, also known under the aliases “TyPeR†and “neXusâ€, is accused of computer hacking and identity theft. Interestingly, no copyright infringement charges have been filed. The Dutchman allegedly “hacked†into the computer of a company involved in the production of the three movies. The term “hacking†should be used loosely here, as Vogelaar appears to have accessed the computer with the login credentials of an employee, who’s mentioned by the initials T.H. How the man obtained the login credentials is unknown, but it’s not unlikely that they were already available online. For the computer hacking charge Vogelaar faces five years in prison, and a possible identity theft sentence could add two more years – if he’s extradited to the United States. First the defendant will have to be served but according to his father, Ben, they haven’t yet been informed of the charges. “We’ll wait, it’ll be okay,†he says. The Department of Justice is taking the case very seriously, especially with the Sony hack fresh in mind. This hack put cybersecurity firmly back on top of the political agenda and in part triggered President Obama’s new cybersecurity plans. MPAA CEO Chris Dodd said that because of hackers certain companies have their “digital products exposed and available online for anyone to loot.†“That’s why law enforcement must be given the resources they need to police these criminal activities,†Dodd noted at the time.
  3. This week the MPA's Stan McCoy said it's a myth that legal content is not available, hinting at an excuse often used by movie pirates. But is that really the case? A quick survey shows that Hollywood still has a long way to go before availability becomes a non-issue. Currently, only one of the ten most-pirated movies can be bought or rented online. Hollywood has a message to all those pirates who keep making excuses to download and stream films illegally. “You have no excuse.†The major movie studios have done enough to make their content legally available, launching thousands of convenient movie services worldwide, they claim. “We need to bust the myth that legal content is unavailable. Creative industries are tirelessly experimenting with new business models that deliver films, books, music, TV programs, newspapers, games and other creative works to consumers,†Stan McCoy noted on the MPAA blog this week. “In Europe, there are over 3,000 on-demand audio-visual services available to European citizens,†he adds. So is the MPA right? Is “availability†an imaginary problem that pirates use as an excuse not to pay? We decided to investigate the issue by looking at the online availability of the ten most downloaded films of last week. Since the MPAA’s blog post talked about Europe and the UK we decided to use which focuses on UK content. The results of our small survey speak for themselves. Of the ten most pirated movies only Gone Girl is available to buy or rent online. A pretty weak result, especially since it’s still missing from the most popular video subscription service Netflix. Ranking Movie Available Online? Buy / Rent 1 Interstellar NO 2 American Sniper NO 3 Taken 3 NO 4 The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies NO 5 John Wick NO 6 Into The Woods NO 7 Fury NO 8 Gone Girl Rent/Buy 9 American Heist NO 10 The Judge NO Yes, the results above are heavily skewed because they only include movies that were released recently. Looking up films from 2011 will result in a much more favorable outcome in terms of availability. But isn’t that the problem exactly? Most film fans are not interested in last year’s blockbusters, they want to able to see the new stuff in their home too. And since the movie industry prefers to keep its windowing business model intact, piracy is often the only option to watch recent movies online. So when the MPA’s Stan McCoy says that lacking availability is a myth, he’s ignoring the elephant in the room. For as long as the film industry keeps its windowing business model intact, releasing films online months after their theatrical release, people will search for other ways to access content, keeping their piracy habit alive. Admittedly, changing a business that has relied on complex licensing schemes and windowing strategies for decades isn’t easy. But completely ignoring that these issues play a role is a bit shortsighted. There’s no doubt that the movie studios are making progress. It’s also true that many people choose to pirate content that is legally available, simply because it’s free. There is no good excuse for these freeriders, but it’s also a myth that Hollywood has done all it can to eradicate piracy. Even its own research proves them wrong. Earlier this year a KPMG report, commissioned by NBC Universal, showed that only 16% of the most popular and critically acclaimed films are available via Netflix and other on-demand subscription services. The missing 84% includes recent titles but also older ones that are held back due to rights issues. Clearly, availability is still an issue. So if Hollywood accuses Google of breeding pirates, then it’s safe to say the same about Hollywood.
  4. Five men in the UK have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud for their participation in the unlawful release of movies onto the Internet. The case, which was heard in Crown Court this week, features big numbers including the distribution of up to 9,000 movies with five million viewers. Placing unreleased movies onto the Internet whilst located in the UK is a risky business and one likely to attract the attention of anti-piracy companies if done on a large-scale. FACT, the Federation Against Copyright Theft, are particularly vigilant in this area and have launch numerous investigations into those it believes have infringed their movie partners’ copyrights. On February 1 2013, FACT announced that they had joined police officers from the Economic Crime Unit to carry out raids in the UK targeting four addresses in the West Midlands. Following a hearing in September 2014, the case was heard in Wolverhampton Crown Court this week. It’s the culmination of three years’ investigative work by FACT into the “source and supply†of copyrighted movies. The accused are: Graeme Reid, 40, from Chesterfield, Scott Hemming, 25, and Reece Baker, 22, both from Birmingham, Sahil Rafiq, 24, of Wolverhampton and Ben Cooper, 33, of Willenhall. In line with previous FACT-led prosecutions, copyright infringement is completely off the table. All men pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Defraud a charge that previously saw SurfTheChannel’s Anton Vickerman jailed for four years. In an earlier FACT press release the men were referred to as members of The Scene but one of the accused informs TorrentFreak that simply isn’t true. “They say we were in The Scene – no, we were P2P,†he said. Unless other connections come out in court, his claims appear to be true. TorrentFreak has learned that the investigation spanned several BitTorrent-based release groups including 26K, RemixHD and UNiQUE, plus torrent sites (the site run by busted US-based release group IMAGiNE) and TheResistance. Nevertheless, the case marks the first time that a group of movie releasers have ever gone to court in the UK and the signs are not promising for the men. Big numbers are being thrown around including the unauthorized release of up to 9,000 movies alongside claims that up to five million people may have viewed them. At the end of the hearing the men were released on bail. They’re now in the hands of FACT’s private prosecution and whatever the court decides is an appropriate sentence following their guilty pleas. The extent of both will be revealed at a hearing later in the year.
  5. Prominent movie torrent release group ETRG had its Twitter account suspended today for an alleged copyright infringement. The incident is rather unique as ETRG hasn't tweeted any links to pirated material. The ExtraTorrent Release Group, or ETRG for short, is one of the best known sources for pirated movies. The group releases dozens of popular films on various torrent sites each week and has a steady following of movie fans looking for fresh content. Some of these followers track new releases through ETRG’s Twitter account. While the group doesn’t link to any copyrighted material, it does list the titles of new releases there. One would think that ETRG isn’t violating Twitter’s policies by merely pasting a title. However, a few days ago two tweets mentioning “The Signal†got them in trouble. The tweets were targeted with a DMCA takedown request which led to the immediate suspension of the group’s account. “Twitter suspended ETRG’s account with no logical or valid reason. In fact they didn’t even give the reason. All I got was a DMCA notification and next day the account was suspended,†ETRG tells TF. In its copyright and DMCA policy Twitter explains that it takes action against “tweets containing links to allegedly infringing materials,†but ETRG didn’t post any links, just text. And there are more strange things happening. The takedown notice was sent on behalf of “Wild Side†and also targeted tweets from @PRoDJi and @TorrentBird. These tweets were removed as well, but interestingly enough the associated accounts haven’t been suspended. ETRG is disappointed with Twitter’s actions and says the company is caving in to unreasonable demands from copyright holders. “It shows how these sites are influenced by the powerful movie industry to do anything they want,†the group says. A few years ago the group stopped posting links after it has its account suspended and at the time Twitter re-enabled it within a day. But even without links it couldn’t escape another suspension. Hoping to get its account reinstated ETRG filed a counter-notice, but several days have passed since and they have yet to hear back from Twitter. Meanwhile, the account remains suspended.

  9. Leaked achievement list suggests Rockstar may be re-releasing the 2004 game for Xbox 360. Rockstar confirmed this rumor today through a posting on their support site. "GTA: San Andreas on the Xbox Marketplace will be available again for purchase beginning October 26th, 2014, through Games on Demand. This version features 720p resolution, enhanced draw distance, and Achievement support." If you purchased the game previously, Rockstar notes: "The Games on Demand version of San Andreas is not compatible with the Xbox Originals version. Save files will not transfer from Xbox Originals. Owners of the Xbox Originals version will still have access to the old version on their consoles and through their download history, with the option to purchase the new version to experience the added features on a new save file." The original story appears below. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas may soon be re-released for Xbox 360, a new set of Achievements suggests. Developer Rockstar Games has not announced a new version of the game for Xbox 360, butXbox Achievements has posted a new list of achievements that seem to indicate a re-release is in the works. In addition, the Xbox Originals version of San Andreas is oddly no longer available to download for Xbox 360--though it remains available to buy for PlayStation 3. On top of that, October 2014 marks the game's tenth anniversary, which would be a fitting time for such a re-release, if it were to happen. San Andreas was released in October 2004 for PlayStation 2, though the game has since come to platforms such as Xbox, PC, Mac, and various mobile devices. We have contacted Rockstar for comment, and will update this story with anything we hear back. Grand Theft Auto V comes to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on November 18. The PC version is scheduled to launch in January 2015. The open-world game has already shipped more than 34 million copies. 11. A second defendant has pleaded guilty following a private copyright infringement prosecution initiated by music group BPI. In the most notable case of its type ever brought in the UK, the man will be sentenced next month for distributing more than 8,000 pre-release tracks. Earlier this month it was revealed that following the lead of the Federation Against Copyright Theft, the BPI would begin their own private prosecution against alleged content pirates. Their case involves former members of now-defunct file-sharing links forum Dancing Jesus. The site was taken down in 2011 following an investigation carried out by the BPI and IFPI, with assistance from the US Department of Homeland Security. Two people were arrested by City of London Police, the owner of the site and the forum’s top uploader. Homeland Security assisted UK police by seizing a Dancing Jesus server hosted in the United States. The trial, which began on October 6, took place at Newcastle Crown Court. One defendant, site owner and admin Kane Robinson of South Shields, had already pleaded guilty to illegally distributing music back in January 2014. Richard Graham, the site’s alleged top uploader, went into the trial with a “not guilty†plea, but after evidence was presented in court earlier this week the Leicestershire man changed his plea to guilty. “The guilty verdict confirms that posting illegal online links to music is a criminal offense which economically harms musicians and the labels that support them,†said David Wood, Director of BPI’s Copyright Protection Unit. “Pre-release piracy, in particular, robs musicians of artistic control, leaving them with no say in when and how their music – which has taken blood, sweat and tears to produce – is released. The case is significant in a number of ways, not least the scale of online infringement connected to the pair’s guilty plea. Add in the fact that Dancing Jesus was particularly well-known as a venue to obtain pre-release content and this becomes the most important UK music industry case since the failed 2010 prosecution of the infamous OiNK BitTorrent tracker. Graham and Robinson will be sentenced under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. Their fate will be determined by Judge Sherwin early next month. 13. Retailers selling alternate console for an additional £20. The glacier-white PlayStation 4 will ship in the UK on Friday October 17, Sony has confirmed to GameSpot. Retailers appear to be offering these systems at a slight increase in cost, selling each 500GB unit for about £350. These come with a custom white DualShock 4 controller too, as well as all the additional cables and materials that come with the standard black PlayStation 4 console. Though there has been no "official" price drop for PS4 and Xbox One, both consoles now sell at a lowered price in the UK, at £330 each. It is not clear whether white PS4s will be sold across North America. Previously, these systems were only available to purchase in bundles, with games such as Destiny andDriveClub. A white PS4 will also feature in a Far Cry 4 bundle due to launch across the UK in November. For additional shots of the white PS4, take a look at the gallery below. 14. Markus Persson's seminal building game due to ship on October 15; US release date not yet confrimed. The long-awaited PlayStation Vita edition of Minecraft will launch across Europe on Wednesday October 15, its developer has revealed. Scotland-based developer 4J Studios, which is handling the port of Markus Persson's breakthrough indie game, revealed the release date on its official Twitter page. A release date for North America has yet to be announced, but because the game's code has now passed certification tests at Sony, it's likely to be close to Europe's. The release date is further confirmation that the PS Vita version of Minecraft will not be cancelled, by neither Sony nor Microsoft, despite the latter software giant purchasing the IP. In mid-September, Microsoft announced it had agreed in principal to acquire Minecraft and its developer Mojang in a deal believed to be worth $2.5 billion. As part of that deal, the studio's three founders--Markus Persson, Carl Manneh, and Jakob Porser--will be leaving the company. At the same time, Microsoft assured that it would not be wiping any versions of Minecraft from Sony's devices such as PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4. Sony, which retains the right to remove the games from its platforms, has not suggested that it is willing to delete any of the games. Since its initial release in 2009, Minecraft has been downloaded more than 100 million times on PC alone. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, released between 2012 and 2013, are still proving popular, with both games regularly holding their spot in the UK all-format top ten. 15. When Ryan Reynolds popped up in a small capacity in 2009′s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, he had the chance to get moviegoers on his side to help launch a spinoff for his character, Wade Wilson – the talkative mercenary who becomes Deadpool. While that film’s odd adaptation of the Deadpool character represented just one of the many problems that forced the studio, Fox, to pretend the film didn’t happen – ignoring it almost entirely when it came to the standalone followup, The Wolverine - viewers at least witnessed Reynolds becoming a scene-stealer as Wilson, before the experiments changed him into some weird concoction of mutant powers. A Deadpool film has been in the works for quite some time, having begun development almost immediately after Wolverine’s first solo adventure. It has a script which, by all accounts, is not only true to the character as depicted in Marvel Comics (breaking the fourth wall and all), but is actually wonderfully entertaining and action-packed. It was penned by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Some time ago Tim Miller was attached to direct with Ryan Reynolds (of course) attached as the lead, but development went nowhere. We even heard word of test footage made to pitch the feature to Fox’s decision-makers, footage that Deadpoolcreator Rob Liefeld described in detail during convention appearances, and praised. That footage just so happened to conveniently leak online in July, on the last day of San Diego Comic-Con, and became one of the most exciting bits of news coming that week, even though it wasn’t part of the convention. Although it went completely under the radar at the time, Sun Media’s Liz Braun had the chance to chat with Ryan Reynolds over the phone that very same week, not long after the Deadpool test footage leaked online. The call was mainly an interview for The Captive, his latest project, but they did chat about the Deadpool footage leaking. Reynolds says the leak was disappointing but followed up with: “But who cares. The movie has been in a state of limbo for a while. There was such an overpowering reaction to the footage, you sort of feel like, ‘Oh, so we weren’t crazy for our reasons for loving this character, for loving this role.’ It’s interesting to see the power of the Internet. It’s awe-inspiring, actually. “And it’s neat that Twitter and Facebook and Instagram can move mountains when used in the right way.†Needless to say, from the overwhelmingly positive response to the test footage, fans are on Reynolds’ side. From a career perspective, after Green Lantern and R.I.P.D. failed critically and financially, Deadpool could be the big franchise he needs and deserves. We thought it would happen first with the X-Forcemovie, another team-based X-Men film that was being written (and potentially directed) by Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) but it seems that project is also at a stalemate, possibly canned entirely thanks to Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg taking over the franchise reins with X-Men: Days of Future Past and its 2016 followup, X-Men: Apocalypse. Days of Future Past was a home run for Fox and broke box office records records for the series while also garnering high review scores. It no doubt solidified where the series is heading and before it even hit theaters, the sequel already had a release date, along with a second Fantastic Four film and Wolverine 3. There is however, an unannounced and untitled X-Men film scheduled for 2018, but with all the talk ofChanning Tatum potentially getting a Gambit movie (and the need for more team-based core X-Men installments), it’s anyone’s guess at this point whether Deadpoolstill has a chance. If it were up to us, this would be a no-brainer greenlight. Why not have a (somewhat) lower budget, more hardcore and edgy superhero film? At least it’s something different from the usual releases. And look, we’re getting over 40 DC and Marvel Comics movies in the next six years. How is Deadpool not among them? Even Hugh Jackman wants another stab at sharing the screen with Deadpool. BREAKING: Oh wow. Just as I typed this, Twentieth Century Fox just announced that Deadpool is coming in 2016. You did it, fans! Reynolds is not signed but is expected to. Miller is still going to direct with a release date set for February 12, 2016, which means production will begin early next year. It also means Deadpool hits theaters before X-Men: Apocalypse - meaning, we may finallyget to see Reynolds and Jackman share the screen as mutants once again (and under much better circumstances…). Fox is shifting release dates and perhaps the long-delayed realization of Deadpoolhas something to do with Assassin’s Creed being delayed out of 2015 (it’s currently sitting without a release date). Fantastic Four’s release date is also shifting from June (where it was delayed to from March, initially) to Assassin’s Creed‘s old date on August 7, 2015, where Guardians of the Galaxy saw much success this year. Deadpool is scheduled to hit theaters on February 12, 2016, followed by X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27, 2016, The Wolverine 3 (not the official title) on March 3rd, 2017, and some as-yet unspecified X-Men film on July 13th, 2018. In other Fox/Marvel film news, Fantastic Four opens August 7th, 2015, followed by Fantastic Four 2 on July 14th, 2017.
  16. As we close out the summer season, it’s time to figure out which Guardians of the Galaxy character we’re going to be for Halloween (dancing baby Groot all the way) and gear up for the onslaught of horror movies that will try to terrify us in the next few months. Sadly, we may be without two notable titles, as both Amityville: The Awakening and James Wan Presents Demonic have had their release dates pulled. Amityville was slated for January 2nd while Demonic was slated for December 12th. Fortunately, there are a number of upcoming horror movies for fans of the genre to enjoy – including Annabelle, Horns, The Babadook, and more – but the disappearance of Amityville and Demonic is notable nonetheless. For those who don’t know, Amityville was considered neither a follow-up to the 2005 Reynolds vehicle nor a remake of the original, but rather a reboot that deals with the same house that makes all its inhabitants want to kill each other. As for Demonic – which features Maria Bello (A History of Violence) and Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) as investigators looking into a series of murders that might have some nefarious paranormal causality – much less is known. There’s been no trailer and there’s been very little news. Of course, James Wan is still considered one of the foremost names in horror. Having directed Insidious,Insidious 2, and last year’s box office horror darling The Conjuring, he’s been on a roll. Then again, Demonic was directed by Will Canon – who’s only feature credit is 2010’s Brotherhood – with Wan acting only as the co-writer and producer, so maybe his luck didn’t rub off quite as much as the studios had hoped. The decision to move these release dates seems odd, as Dimension released the trailer for Amityville just four weeks ago and it looks genuinely creepy, or at least significantly creepier than the Ryan Reynolds letdown from 2005. And considering Wan’s track record, one would think that Demonic could do very well. There’s no word if the pulled release dates are to push the movies earlier in the year to be more competitive with the rest of the brood or later to more or less cast them into the pit of totally forgotten mid-winter fare (which feels the more likely of the pair). We’ll have to wait and see to find out. Stay tuned to Screen Rant for more news on Amityville: The Awakening andDemonic
  17. Two separate publications claim CV1 could ship by April next year with a limited public beta. The long-awaited consumer version of Oculus Rift could begin to ship by summer 2015, according to alleged sources speaking to two separate publications. Both TechRadar and VRFocus claim that a market-ready Oculus Rift will launch in a "strictly limited" public beta half way into 2015. Though specs and release date plans for the consumer version of Oculus Rift (known as CV1) are not public, a limited supply of the latest prototype (known as DK2) is available to developers and hobbyists. Oculus VR, the company formed by creator Palmer Luckey, has urged gamers to hold out for CV1 and resist the developer version. That long wait for the consumer version could end as soon as April 2015, with a strictly limited test supply, although both TechRadar and VRFocus suggest that "summer 2015" (which runs from late June to August) could be the more realistic target for general release. Oculus exec Nate Mitchell recently claimed that the consumer version of Oculus Rift will be priced somewhere between $200 and $400. Palmer Luckey has also previously stated the consumer version would be a significant improvement on the DK2's 1080p display, with a 90Hz refresh rate. Oculus VR has declined to comment. 18. U2 is releasing its latest album for free on iTunes. The rockers took the stage at Apple's latest product unveiling in Cupertino, California Tuesday to perform The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone), a track from their new album, Songs of Innocence. Apple CEO Tim Cook addressed the crowd after the show, reports Rolling Stone. "Wasn't that the most incredible single you ever heard? We would love a whole album of that,' he said. "The question is now, how do we get it to as many people as possible, because that's what our band is all about," frontman Bono responded. "I do believe you have over half a billion subscribers to iTunes, so - could you get this to them?" "If we gave it away for free," Cook replied. Bono then revealed the entire offering would be released Tuesday exclusively on iTunes in 119 countries at no cost to fans. The music will also be available on Beats Music, now owned by Apple, through October 13. Bono spoke to Rolling Stone the day before the event about the offering, which he said U2 had worked on for two years. 'We wanted to make a very personal album," he told reporter Gus Wenner. 'Let's try to figure out why we wanted to be in a band, the relationships around the band, our friendships, our lovers, our family. The whole album is first journeys - first journeys geographically, spiritually, sexually. And that's hard. But we went there." 19. Summer 2015′s Terminator: Genisys – the fifth movie installment in the Terminatorfranchise overall – is shaping up to be a “soft†reboot of the sci-fi property; last year, Paramount Pictures also confirmed that the film will be “the first in a stand-alone trilogy†of movies. Paramount has now officially dated the two sequels to Genisys for theatrical release in 2017 and 2018, respectively, which lends credence to those older rumors that the films will shoot back to back over the course of nine months. The first Genisys sequel (which is being called Terminator 2 for now) will reach theaters on May 19th, 2017; that’s one week after a currently-untitled Marvel Studios film (possibly either Inhumans or Thor 3) is due for arrival. Terminator 3 will follow just over a year after on June 29th, 2018, which is one week before anothercurrently-untitled Marvel Studios film (probably the movie that will begin Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers 3 opens in May that same year). There’s also a new Terminator TV show in development – one from the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles writers/producers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz – that will tie into the movie reboot trilogy, much as the Marvel/ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. occasionally intersects directly with events depicted in Marvel Studios’ film releases (while still exploring independent stories that occur in the same universe). Very little has been (officially) revealed about the story for Genisys, though we know the plot involves a T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) – one whose biological exterior has aged - and Sarah Connor, John Connor, and Kyle Reese, now played by Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, and Jai Courtney, respectively. We also know that two new characters – being played by J.K. Simmons and Matt Smith – will be introduced inGenisys, as the setup for them to become more important players in the followups (possibly the same will hold true for Dayo Okeniyi as Danny Dyson). Genisys is based on a screenplay penned by writer/producer Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island) and writer/director Patrick Lussier (My Bloody Valentine,Drive Angry), with Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) serving as helmsman on the project. It’s not clear which, if any, of these three individuals will be returning to work on the next two Terminator films; nor, for that matter, has it been revealed just yet how, exactly, Genisys will re-imagine/update the mythos and/or subtext of the Terminator property. The Genisys screenwriters have backgrounds in, respectively, science fiction and horror fare, which has us hopeful that the Terminator franchise (soft) reboot will find a way to smartly blend elements from those genres - as James Cameron’s The Terminator and T2: Judgement Day did. We’re also hopeful that Taylor will improve as a director, after having first gotten his feet wet on The Dark World, and make Genisys worthy of being called the “Batman Begins of Terminatormovies,†so to speak – thus giving everyone all the more reason to see the story continued over two more films. As such, the question is – will there be enough audience demand to justify resurrecting the Terminator brand as a multi-platform franchise? Schwarzenegger’s star power isn’t what it used to be, and now superhero/comic book movies tend to feature many of the same elements as the Terminator series – be it time-travel narratives (see: X-Men: Days of Future Past) or advanced A.I. gone rogue (see: next year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron) – but in a world of, well, superheroes. That said, best to wait and see what happens with Genisys first, before making bets either way. Terminator: Genisys opens in U.S. theaters on July 1st, 2015, followed by the next installment (Terminator 2) on May 19th, 2017 and the final installment in the trilogy (Terminator 3) on June 29th, 2018.
  20. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man 3 helmsman Shane Black has a finger in several pies right now, including a movie adaptation of the Doc Savage pulp adventure novels, a new installment in the Predator franchise (an “inventive sequel,†as Black calls it), and a film based on Warner Murphy and Richard Sapir’s Destroyerpaperback novels. However, we can now safely say that Black’s next project will be the noir/detective film The Nice Guys. Production on the film will begin this fall (according to the official press release from Warner Bros.), so that the project can make a Summer 2016 release date. Producer Joel Silver, who’s been working alongside Black as far back as 1987′sLethal Weapon (which Black wrote), praised the Nice Guysscreenplay in his official statement, claiming it reflects“Shane’s great cinematic voice.†Similar to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Nice Guys boasts an original script penned by Black and his current writing partner, Anthony Bagarozzi. The similarities don’t end there, as the Nice Guys premise (like Kiss Kiss) draws from detective/Noir genre elements and combines them with buddy movie tropes (an area where Black is something of a specialist) – pairing Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, in a plotline that has been officially summarized as follows. “The Nice Guys†takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, when down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Gosling) and hired leg-breaker Jackson Healy (Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power. Nice Guys is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on June 17th, 2016, which is the same date set for DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon 3. Other titles currently on the docket for arrival that month include Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, Sony’s Uncharted video game movie, and the Mummy property reboot from Universal - making Black’s detective drama stand out all the more as the rare example of a non-tentpole, non-franchise genre movie aimed at adults during that frame. Indeed, as much controversy as Black’s creative decisions on Iron Man 3 continue to stir up within the geek community, the filmmaker certainly has a decent-sized fanbase all his own – and the majority of its members should be more than happy to show up for Nice Guys. Having Gosling and Crowe as the leads won’t hurt, either. The Nice Guys opens in U.S. theaters on June 17th, 2016.
  21. The period drama Serena is an oddity – in the sense that we’ve heard so little about it, thus far. The flick stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper - their third movie together along with Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle – and was directed by filmmaker Susanne Bier, whose previous work includes the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar-winning film In a Better World. Post-production on Serenamay’ve taken longer than expected, but the movie is seemingly all finished by now – so why doesn’t it have a U.S. release date yet? Serena is now slated to hit U.K. theaters on October 24th this year, but as of right now the project isn’t slated for a U.S. launch – and thus, isn’t a potential contender in the forthcoming awards season race, despite having impressive credentials that also include best-selling source material by Ron Rash. Back in late 2013, the film was shopped around to potential distributors but, for reasons that have yet to be made public, no studios picked up the feature. Bier and her editing team, which includes frequent collaborator Pernille Bech Christensen and Matthew Newman (Drive), reportedly spent some 18 months to finish Serena, with THR‘s insider reporting that “it was just a real precision edit because the story is about a woman’s decent into madness†– coupled with Bier’s tendency (as a filmmaker) to be a perfectionist in general, that is. You can read through the synopsis for Serena below, followed by a newly-released image of Lawrence in the film. The film follows newlyweds George (Cooper) and Serena Pemberton (Lawrence) who travel from Boston to the mountains of North Carolina where they begin to build a timber empire in 1929. Serena soon shows herself to be the equal of any man: overseeing crews, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving a man’s life in the wilderness. Together, this king and queen rule their dominion, killing or vanquishing all who stand in the way of their ambitions. But when Serena learns that she can never bear a child, she sets out to murder the woman who bore George a son before his marriage. And when she starts to suspect that George is protecting his illegitimate family, the Pembertons’ intense, passionate marriage begins to unravel as the story moves toward its shocking reckoning. Both Lawrence and Cooper will have new films hitting theaters before 2014 draws to a close (not counting Cooper’s voice work as Rocket Racoon in Guardians of the Galaxy), in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and American Sniper, respectively. In other words, their careers are going perfectly well and will continue to do so in the future, regardless of what ultimately happens with Serena. (That is, whether it finally gets shown in U.S. theaters or winds up being quietly given a direct-to-home viewing release.) That said, Bier’s film looks to be a handsome historical drama, especially in terms of the costumes from Alice Cortes Kheilova (Hellboy, La Vie en Rose) – and the scripted storyline by Christopher Kyle (K-19: The Widowmaker, Alexander) sounds like it offers the sort of meaty dramatic material that will properly showcase Cooper and Lawrence’s acting prowess. So, fingers crossed, we’ll get to see it sooner than later (here in the States, that is). Serena is currently without a U.S. release date, but will open in the U.K. on October 24th, 2014.
  22. If you’re the kind of moviegoer that gets rankled by casual references to Youtube, Facebook and Twitter in films then Jason Reitman’s upcoming drama Men, Women and Children is probably going to be a bit of a minefield. Based on the novel of the same name by Chad Kultgen, Men, Women and Children explores the ways in which the growth of the internet and social media has changed the way that families interact. After all, teens who want to learn about sex or self-image can now turn to their smartphones with far greater ease than talking to their own parents. Men, Women and Children is now set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2014 in September, with a limited theatrical release scheduled for October 3rd followered by a wider release on October 17th. In addition to this news comes the first teaser trailer for Men, Women and Children, which stars Adam Sandler, Emma Thompson, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jennifer Garner and Judy Greer amongits principle cast. The trailer overlays the physical world with the digital world as the various characters in the ensemble confess things in cyberspace that they don’t dare to say out loud. It’s definitely a drama made for the year 2014, and Men, Women and Children could either end up becoming very dated or only becoming more relevant as time goes on. Check out a couple of official stills from the movie below. The young stars of Men, Women and Children pictures above are Ansel Elgort and Kaitlyn Dever. Elgort played the male lead in this summer’s romantic tearjerker The Fault in Our Stars, played Tommy Ross in the recent remake of Carrie, and appeared in a supporting role in the latest young adult sci-fi franchise starter Divergent. Dever has a regular role in Tim Allen sitcom Last Man Standing, and also starred in the highly acclaimed drama Short Term 12 last year. Reitman himself co-wrote the screenplay for Men, Women and Children with Erin Cressida Wilson (Chloe), and although this teaser isn’t particularly engaging the director’s past work definitely make this new drama worth checking out. Reitman is known for blending comedy and drama well with films like Juno, Thank You For Smoking and Young Adult, and Men, Women and Children certainly has a premise that’s worth exploring. Men, Women and Children will receive a limited release on October 3rd, 2014, followed by a wider release on October 17th.
  23. “Trick or treat!†You’ve heard this statement hundreds of times in life. Perhaps it was your phrase this past Halloween as you arrived at a neighbor’s door to ask for candy and sugar goodies. In any case, we’ve got another “sweet†treat you can expect this Halloween – a Motorola Nexus 6. Yes, we’ve seen our share of commenters all across the Web, who’ve got signature statements when they post comments, such as “Motorola Nexus,†“Moto Nexus,†or “the HTC Nexusâ€,etc. Even though you may think we’re one of you, we’re always keeping our eyes open for what consumers say and do, and what they say they want out of the mobile industry. For those who’ve left their comment trails on the Internet with the words “Motorola†and “Nexus,†you’re more likely than not to get your wish this year. We already knew that LG wasn’t making the Nexus 6; in fact, the company so much as said so from the horse’s mouth. We were a little stunned at the time, considering that LG had been responsible for both the Nexus 4 and 5. We already knew that HTC would be crafting the next Nexus tablet (an 8.9-incher), and some even speculated that HTC would create a new phone. Fortunately for many a Moto X lover, Motorola’s been selected as the lucky manufacturer this time around. We had some idea of this in recent weeks, once we discovered the codename for the device (Shamu). The Motorola rumor came out around the same time as the codename and display size for the Nexus 6. Now, we still can’t say with assurance that Motorola is manufacturing the device, seeing that we don’t yet have an official confirmation from Google, but what we do know is that a Nexus 6 unveil date is now in the wild: October 31, 2014. The date itself isn’t surprising, considering that Google announced the Nexus 5 on October 31, 2013 (the same day last year). What we do know at the moment, however, is that we’ve seen nothing that makes us believe this is true. We’ve no document, however; that’s revealed the new Nexus 6 announcement date. We do, however, have some recent tidbits of juicy info for Moto Nexus fans who’re dying to see if a Moto Nexus 6 is on the way. The credit for this information comes from tech site TKTechNews, who recently revealed some images regarding the on-screen information for the Nexus 6 “Shamu†device. First, let’s get into the specs of the Nexus 6. According to legitimate photos, the Nexus 6 looks to have a 5.9-inch display with a 2K or Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440p) screen resolution. The Nexus 6 will have a Snapdragon 805 processor, keeping in-step with high-end smartphones that’ll be released later this year, and will have an Adreno 420 GPU (the highest GPU to date in the US) graphics. There is no device in the US with Adreno 420 graphics at the moment. The device will run Android L, as can be seen in the screenshots. Apart from these specs, the Nexus 6 will feature a 2.1MP front-facing camera and a 13MP back camera, placing the Nexus lineup in the sights of other high-end smartphones on the market. There is no root access for the device, however – so this is a dead giveaway as to where this phone’s headed. The only major carrier in the US that doesn’t allow root access is Verizon Wireless. Interestingly enough, the device number shows that it’s destined for – you guessed it! – Verizon Wireless! What makes the device even more interesting is that it’s a “Google†device, codenamed Shamu that’s headed to Verizon. Google’s not had such a good track record with its devices on Verizon’s network, but the company’s launch to have a Nexus at Verizon can only spell one thing: Android Silver is real, and not something that was scrapped in favor of the international Android One program for developing markets. Android Engineering Head Dave Burke confirmed that Google’s not finished with the Nexus line, but by so doing, he implicitly confirmed that Google would be doing something different this year. Android Silver is alive and well, folks – and this Verizon device looks to be it. With that said, you can expect this device to hit store shelves this Fall, around the same time that the Nexus 6 goes up on the Google Play Store for sale. Google’s prepping its device for both contract customers and off-contract customers. We’re glad to see Google and the Nexus line finally coming around. Well done, Google!
  24. Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have confirmed that filmmaker Garth Edwards will return to direct the followup to his critically/financially successful Godzilla(which released in theaters earlier this year). However, before that, he is going to call the shots on the first Star Wars spinoff movie from Disney and Lucasfilm, for a 2016 launch in mind. As such, Godzilla 2 will be arriving later than other sequels to 2014 blockbusters that’ve been announced so far (the most recent example beingTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2). The Godzilla sequel (which is currently without an official title) now has a concrete release date: June 8th, 2018. WB also recently claimed March and July 2018 release dates for two new DC universe movies; in addition, the studio’s reserved a May date for an animated feature (reported to be a LEGO Movie franchise installment) and a November date for what may be the sequel to the Harry Potter spinoffFantastic Beasts & Where to Find them (which opens in Fall 2016), that same year. Edwards’ Godzilla reboot (read our review) has grossed over half a billion dollars worldwide in theaters to date. Its financial success is, no doubt, in part responsible for Universal’s decision to green light fellow Kaiju-based sequel Pacific Rim 2 and to Legendary’s decision to move forward with development on the Skull Island project (an origins movie about King Kong and the eponymous island of extraordinary giant creatures), which is set to arrive in 2016. It’s a good time to be a fan of giant monster movies. Nothing has been confirmed yet, with regards to the plot of the next Godzilla film. However, back at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, Edwards offered us the following insight on how the movie Destroy All Monsters could be a major source of inspiration for the sequel. (As you can see, he even predicted that his answer would be brought up again, in the future.) “With the exception of the 1954 original, I would say my second favorite film is Destroy All Monsters. I just love the idea of a monster island. Having a world with these creatures in it. I find that fascinating and would like to treat that realistically. I wouldn’t want to limit it to one other foe, I think it’s more fun to – this question will come back to haunt me if we ever do a sequel – but I think multiple creatures make better movies in terms of the image of Gojira.†Again, nothing is set in stone yet, but at the 2014 Comic-Con Edwards presented aGodzilla 2 teaser that alluded to the inclusion of such Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (or MUTOs) as Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah in the sequel. Skull Island will be the first modern blockbuster to explore the concept of a fantastical island populated by enormous creatures, but Edwards’ Godzilla sequel could prove to be a more emotionally and logically-grounded take (yet just as impressive, spectacle-wise). Godzilla 2 arrives in theaters on June 8th, 2018.
  25. More and more of the major Hollywood studios have now either finalized their movie release slate or are actively in the process of doing so, where it concerns Summer 2015 – a competitive release frame that will see new installments in such franchises as The Avengers, Jurassic Park, and Terminator arrive on the scene. Case in point, Warner Bros. has decided to move The Man from U.N.C.L.E. – a modern film reboot of the 1960s TV series that was directed by Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes) and stars Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) and Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger). The secret agent action/thriller has been shifted from January 2015 to August 14th of the same year, where it will face the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton. Does this move suggest that WB is more or less confident about Man from U.N.C.L.E.‘s financial prospects? You decide. Man from U.N.C.L.E. is currently poised to serve as WB’s sole new tentpole release for August 2015, as the studio has also gone and moved director Ericson Core’s Point Break remake up a week, to a July 31st, 2015 theatrical debut. The latter film – starring Luke Bracey (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) and Édgar Ramírez (Deliver Us From Evil) in roles originated by Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze – was previously set to face-off against Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed movie during its opening weekend. Point Break 2.0 ought to benefit from the move, box office-wise, as its biggest competition is now the Sacha Baron Cohen action/comedy Grimsby. WB has settled on the launch pad for director Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper – a film about the late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (who is portrayed by Bradley Cooper in the movie). The prestigious true-story subject matter/director combo makes American Sniper a potential awards season contender; WB executives clearly agree and have set the film to begin an Oscar-qualifying run on Christmas Day 2014, before it goes wide on January 16th in 2015. That strategy mimics what Universal did last year with Lone Survivor – another dramatic feature inspired by real-life Navy SEALs. (The latter didn’t clean up at the Oscars, but did just fine critically and financially). American Sniper will arrive on the same day as two other true-story dramatic features – director Angelina Jolie’s Louis Zamperini biopic Unbroken and director Ava DuVernay’s Martin Luther King, Jr. memoir Selma – that are already part of the next awards season conversation. David Ayer’s WWII thriller Fury (costarring Brad Pitt), by comparison, is less of a shoo-in to generate Oscar buzz, but if it does then it will have a head-start on the competition. Sony has bumped the film up about a month to an October 17th, 2014 release date, where it will go head to head with the horror icon re-imagining Dracula Untold and the animated feature The Book of Life. Lastly, Sony has shifted its family-friendly offering Pixels back two months from May 25th to July 24th, 2015. The film, which boasts a, well, unique storyline about former 1980s arcade video game champions (played by such folk as Adam Sandler, Josh Gad, and Peter Dinklage) who are called upon to stop an invading force of 8-bit aliens, will now take on the Amy Schumer comedy Trainwreck and the Poltergeistremake at the box office. If nothing else, this flick sounds different than your average Sandler raunchy laughfest. To recap: Fury opens in theaters on October 17th, 2014. American Sniper begins a limited release on December 25th, 2014, before it goes wide on January 16th, 2015. Pixels arrives on July 24th, 2015, followed by Point Break a week later. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. hits theaters on August 14th, 2015.
