  2. Police say they have smashed "a criminal group" involved with the unauthorized distribution of video online. Three men in their twenties and thirties have been arrested by Polish police and up to three sites are reported down. The action follows the shutdown of several 'pirate' sites in Poland last month and the arrest of a millionaire businessman. With web-blockades, domain seizures and payment processor interventions making headlines, campaigns to shut down individual sites have been less prominent than usual in the first half of 2015. But that doesn’t mean they’ve stopped. Just last week the popular BT-Chat was shut down in Canada following pressure from the MPAA and news from Europe suggests that at least two more sites have fallen in recent days following industry action. After a long investigation, police in Poland report that authorities swooped last week on individuals said to be part of a “criminal group†involved with the unauthorized distribution of video online, movies in particular. In an operation carried out by municipal police and officers from a regional cybercrime unit, several locations were searched including homes, offices and cars. Three men aged between 24 and 33 years-old were arrested in Wroclaw, the largest city in western Poland. According to police, 14 computers, 13 external drives, 40 prepaid cards, several mobile phones and sundry other items were seized during the raids. In addition to the images below, police have put together a video (mp4) of one of the targeted locations complete with a horror movie-style audio track for added impact. While police have not published the names of the domains allegedly operated by the men, two leading sites have disappeared in recent days without explanation. and were the country’s 160th and 130th most popular sites overall but neither is currently operational. The men are being blamed for industry losses of at least $1.3m and together stand accused of breaching copyright law which can carry a jail sentence of up to five years in criminal cases. For reasons that are not entirely clear, however, police are currently advising a potential three year sentence. The latest shutdowns, which also encompass torrent site, follow police action in May which closed down and the lesser known, and With around 324,000 likes on its Facebook page was by far the most popular site but it seems unlikely that it will return anytime soon. Currently displaying “THE END†on its front page, its owner was arrested last month. Local media is connecting the closure to the arrest of a 49-year-old businessman who had been running a company offering “Internet services†and also Poland’s largest pirate site. According to authorities he made millions of dollars from the operation and laundered money by investing in the stock exchange. Those funds have reportedly been frozen. Also arrested were three accomplices, including a 36-year-old allegedly responsible for creating the database of movies and setting up a US company to assist with the site’s finances. They all stand accused of copyright infringement and money laundering offenses and face ten years in prison.
  3. The RIAA continues to reduce its workforce, which has been slashed in half in just five years. According to the organization's latest tax return the RIAA now employs 55 people. The group's top three executives account for a quarter of all salaries paid, including several sizable bonuses. The RIAA has just submitted its latest tax filing to the IRS, covering the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014. Time for us to see where the music industry’s anti-piracy arm stands. In previous years the RIAA reported a massive decline in revenue after the record labels cut back on their membership dues, but this trend now appears to have stopped. Total revenue according to the latest filing is $24.2 million, a slight increase from $24.1 million the year before. Despite the stabilizing income, which mostly comes from the record label’s membership dues, the RIAA continues to trim employees. Over the past five years the number of employees at the RIAA has been slashed in half, dropping from 117 to just 55. In its most recent filing the RIAA lists 55 people on the payroll compared to 58 the year before. In total these employees earned $11.7 million of which more than 25% went into the pockets of three top executives. Interestingly, while more than half of the organization’s workers have been let go, the RIAA’s top employees have enjoyed salary increases year after year, including some healthy bonuses. The top earner in the year ending March 2014 was CEO Cary Sherman with a $1.6 million a year payout for a working week of 50 hours. Sherman’s base salary is a cool million dollars, but that was boosted with a half million bonus and other compensation. Other high income employees were Mitch Glazier (Senior Executive VP), Steve Marks (General Counsel) and Neil Turkewitz (EVP International) with $776,616, $728,959 and $657,952 respectively, including over a quarter million in bonuses. RIAA top earners While these incomes are significant, they are relatively modest compared to other industry groups. For example, MPAA boss Chris Dodd earns $3.3 million, while its former General Counsel Henry Hoberman earned close to a million. Looking at other expenses reported in the tax return we see that the RIAA spent $2.3 million on lobbying, a figure that has remained relatively stable over time. The same cannot be said for the group’s legal fees, which dropped from $16.50 to $1.28 million in a few years. In part, this is because the expensive lawsuits against individual file-sharers and services such as Limewire have ended. Most recently the RIAA started another lawsuit, this time targeting the music linking site MP3Skull, so perhaps the amount spent will increase again in future years. The full 2013/2014 filing is available here.
  4. The makers of the Indian movie "Piku" have obtained a blocking order against several popular websites including Vimeo, The Pirate Bay and KickassTorrents. The order issued by the Indian High Court prohibits the sites and various ISPs from linking to pirated versions of the movie, but may not be as effective as it sounds. Today sees the theatrical premiere of the highly anticipated Bollywood blockbuster “Piku.†As is the case with most movies, unauthorized copies the film will eventually end up being made available from various websites. However, the makers of Piku hope that a recent High Court order will limit the fallout. Multi Screen Media, one of the companies behind the movie, has obtained a restraining order against 13 websites and a blocking order against some of the country’s largest Internet providers (pdf). Similar orders have been granted in the past, but this one stands out because of the sites it targets. The order lists the following domain names:,,,,,,,,,,, and The owners of the domains are restrained from “making available†or otherwise distributing Piku without a proper license. In addition, India’s largest Internet providers are ordered to block access to the sites. The most surprising target is the popular video sharing platform Vimeo, a site mostly used by independent filmmakers to share their work. While Piku’s makers describe the site as a piracy hub, the site rarely hosts infringing material. However, there even more worrying issues with the order that will severely limit its effectiveness. For example, it lists Pirate Bay’s .org domain even though the site is currently operating from Similarly, the domain name of KickassTorrents is both outdated and misspelled as As a result, the blocking order may not be as successful as the filmmakers would have hoped. According to the order ISPs must block the mentioned domains within 24 hours. A new hearing is scheduled for July 31 where it will be decided if the measures can be lifted, or if they must stay in place. At the time of writing no pirated copies of Piku have leaked online yet, but if one surfaces this current order will do very little to stop it from spreading.
  5. Kim Dotcom's upcoming extradition hearing has been delayed by three months. The procedure was set to go ahead in just four weeks but the High Court says that would give the entrepreneur insufficient time to prepare his case. It will now take place no earlier than September 1, 2015. While trying to recoup as much of his seized wealth as possible, Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom is determined to avoid being sent to the United States where he faces the largest copyright case in history. On four previous occasions the German-born businessman has been granted delays to his inevitable extradition hearing but in March his luck appeared to run out. Through his legal team Dotcom asked the North Shore District Court for an adjournment until October, claiming that more time was need to prepare his case and those of co-defendants Mathias Ortmann, Finn Batato and Bram van der Kolk. The request was denied. Last month the parties returned to court with a request for a judicial review. Today and with some reservations, Justice Sarah Katz at the High Court granted the application, sending the matter back to the District Court to set a new hearing to take place no earlier than September 1. Justice Katz said that she believed that the delay was necessary for Dotcom and his associates to prepare their cases and have a fair hearing. “I have therefore concluded, with some reluctance (given the time that has elapsed since the plaintiffs were first brought before the courts) that the interests of natural justice require an adjournment of the 2 June 2015 extradition hearing date,†Justice Katz said. Previously, legal team issues and associated financing problems have prompted Dotcom to seek delays to his extradition hearing, but this morning the Judge indicated that the current delay shouldn’t herald additional claims. “This [adjournment] should not be taken by the plaintiffs, however, as a signal that any ongoing funding or representation difficulties (if they arise) would be likely to justify further adjournments,†Justice Katz said. “On the contrary, the plaintiffs must take full responsibility for preparing for their extradition hearing on whatever new date is allocated, with whatever level of legal support they are able to secure.†The United States has been particularly vocal on Dotcom’s financial position with claims that the entrepreneur “improperly divested himself†of shares in cloud-hosting service Mega when that money could have been used for his defense. The Judge addressed those claims in today’s ruling. “[Dotcom’s] Trust Me Trust is said to be a sham and Mr Dotcom’s conduct in relation to it is said to amount to equitable fraud,†the judgment notes, adding that if such an allegation was true, further delays to any trial would not be tolerated. In the event, Justice Katz said the validity of the U.S. government’s claims would be determined in separate proceedings. “For present purposes I must give Mr Dotcom the benefit of the doubt on the issue. Further, the assets of the Trust Me Trust, whoever may ultimately be entitled to them, are currently subject to freezing orders,†Justice Katz wrote. Finally, Dotcom co-defendant Finn Batato, who previously applied for legal aid due to a poor financial situation, will now have to defend himself after that application was turned down. However, that is not viewed as a problem by the Judge. “Mr Batato will be able to derive significant benefit from the work undertaken by his former legal team prior to their withdrawal. He will also derive significant benefit from the fact that the other three plaintiffs are legally represented and the plaintiffs are taking a collaborative approach to extradition issues,†the judgment reads. While today’s judgment appears to rule out further delays to Dotcom’s extradition hearing, the history of this case has shown us to expect the unexpected.
  6. The superb Grand Theft Auto V was finally released this week on PC, setting off a wave of desperation in those looking to obtain the game for free. After the first cracks appeared downloads mounted quickly, with GTA V pirates gobbling up more bandwidth in the first few hours than last weekend's initial wave of Game of Thrones pirates. Grand Theft Auto V is one of the most eagerly anticipated PC game releases of 2015 and this week the tension was finally over. For most the wait for desktop version of the 2013/2014 smash hit was totally worth it, with overwhelmingly positive reviews circulating online. For others, however, the week has been one of tooth-gnashing, nail-biting tension, largely spent worrying over whether the mighty DRM-defeating piracy overlords would find it in their hearts to throw a cracked version to the masses. And in parts it was a pretty ugly thing to behold. Endless warez and torrent forums (and more public affairs such as Reddit) were flooded with requests for a cracked version of the iconic game, leading to anger over the umpteenth duplicate thread among those who’d answered the same questions dozens of times already. But the real desperation was to be found in numerous chat channels occupied by people hoping to get an early heads-up on where to find the first free (and functioning) online copies. On the day of the game’s release TF spent time in a few of them and for the most part it was an absolute car crash, largely due to people posting links to all manner of bogus content. While the pictures of crack (cocaine) and the odd meme weren’t particularly hostile, the links to renamed .exe files and people running them there and then, with no apparent concern for the well being of their computers, was something to behold. “Don’t forget to disable your anti-virus before running,†was the sterling advice given on a number of occasions. At least twice people claimed to have received errors on their screen after running what they thought was a genuine crack, only to immediately disappear from chat, never to return. With the air thick with schadenfreude, much dark hilarity ensued among the link spammers. By Wednesday it became clear that Chinese group 3DM would probably be the first to put out a crack for the popular title and sure enough a few hours later the much-anticipated code began to propagate. Suitable only for Windows 7 machines in the first instance, a later version claimed to cater for Windows 8 installations too. But for some the few hours wait between official GTA V launch and the subsequent crack release had been too much. With a level of impatience not often seen in the gaming world, countless users publicly declared “enough is enough†and reported buying the game on Steam instead. They’re probably still stuck in Los Santos now, robbing and killing their way to infamy. Nevertheless, many thousands more with either more patience, less disposable income, or both, proceeded to obtain the game and its crack through less official channels. By very early Thursday at least 20,000 people had obtained the game using BitTorrent, a not inconsiderable feat considering the huge size of the files involved. While the updates and cracks weighed in at less than 400mb, the game files themselves were changing hands in archives ranging from 40GB to 60GB, with warnings that the compressed version could take four hours or more to decompress and install, even after the mammoth download. But despite the waiting and hoop jumping, by early Thursday a staggering one petabyte of data had been exchanged on the most popular GTA V torrents, an amount equal to all U.S. Internet traffic during a single day in 2000. Or, to put it another way, more data than was consumed by the million Game of Thrones pirates who downloaded the first leaked episode in the hours following last week’s surprise release. Nevertheless, even after all the head-scratching, waiting, downloading, decompressing and other shenanigans, many users are still having problems running the cracked version of the game. Others, on the other hand, report no problems at all and have heaped praise on 3DM for their amazing work. “I love this game! Is there any way to donate to 3DM?†a user on one site asked. “How about sending money to the Rockstar devs instead?†came a dry response. And indeed, some pirates intend to do just that. “It’s definitely impressive [to have cracked the game] in such a short time. I appreciate the efforts a lot,†wrote one. “My only real goal was to gauge how well it runs on my PC before I plunk down $60 for it. Now that I know it runs fine I’ll be buying it after work today.†
  7. The registry behind the Somalian .SO TLD has banned more "Kickass" related domain names, citing illegal activities. The actions target,, and several others domains, even a parked one. The owners, who are not affiliated with the popular torrent site, lost their domain names without prior notice. With millions of unique visitors per day KickassTorrents has become a prime target for copyright holders, many of whom would like to see the site taken offline. Among other tactics, copyright holders ask domain name registries to suspend pirate site domain names. For a long time the Somalian .so TLD appeared to be a relatively safe haven, but this changed last month when the domain was “banned.†Initially the action appeared to be an isolated incident, but the .SO registry wasn’t done with the Kickass brand yet. A few days ago the .SO registry targeted a new round of “Kickass†related domains.,,,,, and were all added to the ban list. Interestingly, none of the domains were affiliated with the notorious torrent site., for example, was a relatively low traffic streaming site that simply used the Kickass brand to gain traffic. A similar domain name,, wasn’t even operational. The owner had parked the domain which wasn’t linking to any infringing material. Still, this domain was banned as well for an alleged violation of .SO’s policies. “The central registry has deleted the domain ‘’. The domain was in violation of their usage policy,†Dynadot informed the owner. The .SO registry isn’t commenting on its actions, but it’s very likely that complaints from copyright holders are the main reason. By taking away the domain names of popular sites rightsholders hope to frustrate and confuse the public. To a certain degree this strategy seems to be working. KickassTorrents is currently hard to find on search engines such as Google. Instead, many users are redirected to scam sites where they have to leave their credit card details to register a “free†account. Findability issues aside, the real KickassTorrents is still alive and kicking. The site continues to operate on its old domain name, which regained its spot among the 100 most visited sites on the Internet.

  12. Google adds games to its Knowledge Graph. If you Google search a video game, Google's Knowledge Graph will now offer more details related to that game, like its release date, developer, publisher, and more. If you search for Civilization: Beyond Earth, for example, you'll see a panel on the right with screenshots from the game, its Metacritic score, a short description via Wikipedia, the series it belongs to, and what platforms it's available for. The search works for both specific game titles and game series. First introduced in 2012, Google's Knowledge Graph enhances searches by offering these summaries of movies, books, places, people, food, and more. Video games are just the latest addition. “We always want to help people find the best answers to their questions – fast,†a Google spokesperson told VentureBeat. “With today’s update, you can ask questions about video games, and (while there will be ones we don’t cover) you’ll get answers for console and PC games as well as the most popular mobile apps.†Add Rep and Leave a feedback Reputation is the green button in the down right corner on my post
  13. Bungie is planning another Iron Banner event by the end of the year which addresses players' feedback. Bungie will launch another Iron Banner event in Destiny by the end of the year that addresses feedback from players, the developer has announced. Destiny's competitive multiplayer normally balances the gap between higher and lower-level Guardians so they can play together, but the Iron Banner should have been different by taking players' levels into account. However, players quickly noticed that Guardian levels didn't seem to make as much as a difference as Bungie suggested. Bungie later explained that the largest advantage a player could have is around 7 levels. "In the next Iron Banner, we will debut a much more dramatic difference between players of wide variation in Level," Lead Designer Tyson Green said in the latest Bungie Weekly Update. Green also said that Bungie will detail the changes in an article of its own as soon as it settles on some of the numbers, but added that for the next Iron Banner, a Fireteam leader will need to be Level 20 to enter. Lower Level players may join in with a Level 20 "chaperone," but they will find it very challenging. Additionally, in order to discourage players from quitting a match if they feel that they're about to lose, in the next Iron Banner players will receive a Medallion of Iron on a loss. The next time they win, those Medallions will convert into a reputation gain almost equal to a win. The next Iron Banner will also add exclusive, Level 30 reward Armor, easier, more valuable Bounties, and adjustments to the event's reputation system. For more details about changes to the Iron Banner, head over to Bungie's website. Add Rep and Leave a feedback Reputation is the green button in the down right corner on my post
  14. Still no word on when the PlayStation Plus Edition will be made available. Driveclub's messy launch has still not been entirely cleared up, though developer Evolution Studios says it's "steadily improving connectivity for everybody" as it adds new multiplayer events for those who can play the game online. The latest update on its attempts to resolve issues that have hampered the game since launch makes note of everyone's frustration, but asks fans to "please understand that we are doing everything we can to get all aspects of online play up and running smoothly as quickly as possible." More servers for the game continue to come online, and Evolution says regular server updates are going out, too. The company recently claimed that the "majority" of players are now able to connect to the game's servers, which is necessary for accessing many of Driveclub's features. Those who are able to connect will now find new events that are available in multiplayer, as well as "more variety when you choose to race with and against other drivers online." "We will keep you up to date as we improve server performance for all aspects of online play," the studio says. "Thank you again for your support while this work continues." There is still no word on when we'll be seeing the free version for PlayStation Plus members. The Plus Edition was to offer a limited slice of the game; while you'd have access all features, only certain cars and tracks would be playable without upgrading to the full version (priced at $50 for Plus members). Earlier this week, Evolution said it had no "concrete info" on when it would be released. It was originally expected out alongside the full game on October 7, only to be delayed due to server issues. 15. Ricky Martin wants 'maybe three' daughters. The 42-year-old singer is father to six-year-old twin boys Matteo and Valentino, who were born via surrogate. He can't get enough of parenthood and would love to add to his brood; something his kids would like too. 'Not one, not two, maybe three!' he laughed to ET, when asked if he'd like a little girl. 'I don't know, but I'm really looking forward to it. Parenting is a very big responsibility, but I love every single minute of it they are my inspiration.' Now his sons are getting older they have started to ask Ricky questions. Recently one of the tots quizzed him on whether he had been in Ricky's tummy when he was a baby, with the Puerto Rican singer determined to be as truthful as possible with him. 'Nowadays they're asking a lot of questions and one thing I promised myself is to be completely honest with them," he explained. "Whenever they ask me a question, I will answer with the truth. Until they get the entire information. For me it's very important for them to know where they're coming from.' Ricky is gearing up for his new single Adios to hit the charts. It's a fusion of Latin and French music and he's sure his audience will love it. The star took the unusual step of releasing bits of the promo via his Twitter account, something he thinks other artists will do going forward. 'It's about uniting forces. And I would be the first act to release a video on Twitter. I'm very happy to be part of this movement, the social media movement is incredible,' he said. 'I believe that if you surround yourself with the right group of people between producers and composers something magical can happen.' 16. Ubisoft says Assassin's Creed Chronicles series is likely to continue beyond the upcoming "China" 2.5D side-scroller. Assassin's Creed Chronicles could become a franchise, according to Ubisoft. The first entry in the side-scrolling series, Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China, is not even released yet, but Ubisoft now says it is optimistic about creating more entries in the series in the future. "We really liked the side-scrolling idea, like Mark of the Ninja, and we thought it would be a really great way to explore some of the other universes we've created," Assassin's Creed Unity creative director Alex Amancio said in an interview with Eurogamer. The 2.5D Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China is set in 16th century China, and it stars an Assassin named Shao Jun, a female character fans met in the Assassin's Creed Embers animated movie. The game features an art style inspired by traditional brush paintings of era in which it is set. Amancio said he would like to carry this idea forward for future games. "One thing that's really cool is that every one of the chapters of this game will be in the art style representative of that era in time," he said. "This is why Shao Jun's game is like Chinese ink--very black and red. Once we have other characters and timeframes the art style will completely change to match that specific character." Amancio wouldn't give specifics regarding whether future Assassin's Creed Chronicles would be released as expansions to Assassin's Creed Chronicles China or as standalone, downloadable games. However, he did tease that "fan-favorite" characters could appear in future games. "I don't want to spoil the surprise," Amancio said. "But the idea is that we have this rich universe--we're going to use it." Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China is currently in development at Climax Studios, which most recently released the PC version of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Currently, the only way to get Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China is to buy Unity's $30 DLC pass. Add Rep and Leave a feedback Reputation is the green button in the down right corner on my post
  17. Check out 30 minutes of pre-alpha gameplay footage for a game you'll likely never get to play. Around 30 minutes of gameplay footage for TimeSplitters developer Free Radical Design's scrapped Star Wars: Battlefront III has emerged, giving gamers a glimpse at a game they'll likely never play. A pair of 15-minute gameplay videos (via Eurogamer) provide a look at how the game played in its pre-alpha state. The videos show off all manner of environments, vehicles, and playable characters. These were to include well-known Star Wars characters such as Mace Windu, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Padme, among others. Despite numerous and detailed attestments to its existence and development, LucasArts never confirmed that Battlefront III was in fact in production. The game has long been the subject of much rumor, speculation, and head-butting. Its developer, Free Radical Design, was later folded into Crytek UK. Though we may never get to play Battlefront III, Swedish Battlefield developer DICE is currently working on a brand new Star Wars: Battlefront game for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. We haven't seen much of the game yet, but DICE plans to reveal more about it in spring 2015. Add Rep and Leave a feedback Reputation is the green button in the down right corner on my post
  18. Survived the frigid wastes of Dark Souls II's final DLC package, and want more intense action combat? Lords of the Fallen could be for you. At first glance, City Interactive Games' Lords of the Fallen bears striking similarity to From Software's Dark Souls. The game's near-identical interface, as well as a particular flow to its combat will be familiar to any Souls veteran. But is it more than just a Dark Souls clone? Is the Souls formula ripe for new takes that change how dark and punishing it can be? I huddled by a bonfire with executive producer Tomasz Gop to find out. A LIGHT AT THE END Dark Souls does not shy away from imbuing its setting with a suffocating sense of gloom and doom. This context stays in lockstep with the punishing combat and hostile environments. Though Gop describes Lords of the Fallen's fantasy world as being similarly dark, he adds "...It’s not as bound to be doomed as in Souls. We were not after that degree of dark." This also means you'll encounter fewer surprise deaths in Lords of the Fallen, such as falling off high ledges, or being ambushed by hidden enemies. "Environmental deaths in Dark Souls aren’t cheap," Gop elaborates. "But most of them would feel cheap in Lords because of the way we’ve designed the game. There are places where players will have a chance (here: high probability) of falling to their doom, but not only will they not be frequent, but also they’ll mostly be found in optional areas." MAGIC MOMENTS Dark Souls allows players to build classes who wield magic as their primary means of dealing with a threat. Lords of the Fallen takes a different approach by turning magic into what Gop calls a "smartbomb" that any class can use. It's a highly powerful, limited use spell that can be deployed to make a particularly demanding fight more survivable. "It will never be an 'I win' button but it can buy some breathing space." Gop adds. MAN AT ARMS For class builds that do not rely as strongly on magic, Dark Souls places great importance on learning its wide variety of weapon types. Though Lords of the Fallen relegates magic use to dire situations, the game still contains a diverse arsenal of melee implements. "We have 11 weapon classes, from great swords and heavy hammers to staves and daggers," says Gop. "Each class has its own full set of attacks and animations, all based on motion capture sessions. A twirling staff is good for keeping two or three opponents at a distance and hitting them all at once while two fist weapons are a lethal combo for single-target hit and run tactics. Each weapon’s attack speed and damage depends on character attributes and of course there’s their range to consider. With three types of shields and the magical gauntlet with interchangeable runes, it all adds up to an impressive number of tactical combinations." It’s not as bound to be doomed as in Souls. We were not after that degree of dark. You'll still need the required attributes to wield a particular weapon, but unlike Dark Souls, Lords of the Fallen won't require you to pay attention to the physical space available to you when striking; it won't bounce off a wall if swung in an enclosed area. "We just think it’s challenging enough to hit your opponent without that extra bit of realism," Gop explains. SO YOU'RE GOING TO DIE Death comes with significant consequence in Dark Souls, including the loss of resources that can be used to purchase weapons and stat boosts if you don't make it back to your corpse before a subsequent demise. Bonfires act as both save points and safe harbour, where those resources can be spent to take the pressure away from carrying them through the next hostile area. Lords of the Fallen uses a similar save point system, but contains a few minor differences regarding how experience points (the equivalent of the souls resource) tie into making death significant. "The ghost of your experience that lingers around the place you were last defeated will start gradually vanishing with time, so you don’t have forever to reclaim it," Gop explains. You can "bank" these experience points at any save point, but it's optional. "When you keep killing enemies without banking your experience at savepoints or dying, each next kill increases your “killstreak†multiplier, so there’s something for those really challenge-thirsty too," says Gop. "But keep in mind, the game was primarily balanced for people who play 'by-the-book', using the savepoints." Those save points will be "relatively frequent, and never too far from boss fights," according to Gop, while a relatively rare consumable item will allow you to reclaim dropped experience after death. WE'RE NOT IN THIS TOGETHER Asynchronous connectivity in the form of messages left by other players created a sense of a communal struggle in Dark Souls, while its invasion system provided additional challenges in the form of direct player versus player combat. Lords of the Fallen, quite simply, won't feature any multiplayer features such as these. "We had some very interesting ideas but we’re a relatively small team so we had to prioritize singleplayer," Gop explains. DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES Ambiguity is the best way to describe Dark Souls' storytelling methods. Though a consistent narrative does underpin your exploration of its dark world, that story must be pieced together through environmental features, item descriptions, and by deciphering cryptic character dialogue. Even then, some pieces remain a mystery, which leads to much speculation and communal lore deduction amongst hardcore fans. Gop says the approach taken to Lords of the Fallen's own storytelling leaves less to interpretation. "To those who are interested in putting the whole story together, it needs to be clear," he says. "There’s a lot of optional exploration involved in order to find all the audio notes, quests and sights but once you put in that effort, you’ll know the whole story." 19. See new fighters Claudio and Katarina in action. We have a bunch of new information on Tekken 7 as the Bandai Namco fighting game is starting location testing in Japan. In this video, uploaded by YouTube user Abdul-Ghaffar Allaf, you can see one previously unannounced character named Claudio, and in this video you can see another newcomer to Tekken 7, Katarina. We also know that Bandai Namco is testing some fundamental changes to the Tekken formula. Two new additions in Tekken 7 are Rage Arts and Power Crush. With Rage Arts, players can enter fighter-specific commands to initiate a Rage State, which increases attack damage and grants access to special moves. Power Crush, meanwhile, are special moves that can't be interrupted by attacks, but that still leaves you open to taking damage. You can use them as much as you want, but at the risk of dwindling your health bar. According to Siliconera, Tekken 7 will also feature some fighter customization items. As we reported when Tekken 7 was first announced, it will use Unreal Engine 4, and you can see its logo displayed prominently in the videos, but Tekken series director Katsuhiro Harada said that what we can see now doesn't represent the final product. He said that the game's graphics are "60 percent" finished, and that they don't yet include character lighting, skin shaders, and other features. In early August, Harada revealed another potential new fighter when he asked players for feedback on its design. Tekken 7 is set to hit arcades in Japan next year, but we still don't have a date for a console release. 20. Magic Mike XXL is one of a number of Summer 2015 movies that are either the first sequel to what was previously a one-off box office hit – or, alternatively, just the latest installment in a long-running cinematic franchise. Filming on the Magic Mike sequel got underway just a week or so ago, which is why we’re now playing catch-up – and learning the identities of the newcomers to the world of Channing Tatum’s onscreen stripper alter ego. The list includes Jada Pinkett Smith, who will also be gracing the small screen in the weeks ahead when she appears as the sadistic mob boss Fish Mooney on Fox’s Gotham (see the image above). Deadline is reporting that Smith will be costarring in Magic Mike XXL in the role of a strip club owner; it’s a role that was originally intended for a man, so it should be interesting to see how the gender-swapping affects (or doesn’t) the way the character comes across. Meanwhile, The Wrap has revealed that Amber Heard (3 Days to Kill) is onboard for the Magic Mike sequel, as is Groundhog Day alum Andie MacDowell (recently seen in Cedar Cove), according to Variety. Heard and MacDowell’s role in the film remain under wraps for now. Magic Mike XXL, by all accounts, will be a very different story about the life and times of male strippers than that offered by its predecessor. Tatum, who co-wrote the sequel alongside his writing/producing partner Reid Carolin (who also penned the first Magic Mike), drew inspiration from the former’s real-life experience – back when, as a young man, he attended (or, rather, worked at) a stripper convention - during the process of scripting Magic Mike 2. Amber Heard and Andie MacDowell have joined the ‘Magic Mike XXL’ cast The Magic Mike sequel, as it were, features many of the same cast members as the first installment (minus Matthew McConaughey, that is), in addition to the same writer; Magic Mike helmsman Steven Soderbergh as the cinematographer and the editor; and Soderbergh’s longtime first assistant director, Gregory Jacobs, calling the shots. Which is to say, as different as the story of Magic Mike XXL might be from the first movie, the sequel ought to maintain both some degree of thematic continuity and, in particular, a similar visual design. Moreover, there’s a fair argument to be made that Magic Mike was at its best when unfolding as a thoughtful, but good-humored, workplace comedy – which is something the sequel looks to offer in even greater amounts – and not so much when it was playing through its (sometimes cliche) dramatic story beats. So, all things considered, Magic Mike XXL has the potential to be just as good, if not better, than its predecessor. … At the very least, we’re just hoping for a Magic Mike followup that doesn’t wind up being an Ocean’s Twelve-style sequel. Magic Mike XXL opens in U.S. theaters on July 1st, 2015.
  21. In recent years BitTorrent Inc. has managed to get some of the biggest artists in the world to work with them, using BitTorrent technology as a promotional tool. The company is currently looking to add more partners to the roster and in their pitch they claim that BitTorrent users tend to be heavy music consumers. BitTorrent Inc, the company behind the successful uTorrent and BitTorrent file-sharing clients, has been making huge efforts in recent times to shed the false image that the company is synonymous with online piracy. One of the key ways it’s changing this perception is by partnering with well-known artists such as De La Soul, Moby and Madonna, and showing that BitTorrent is an ideal tool to connect artists with fans. To provide some examples of what it can do, BitTorrent Inc. has made a distribution and advertising deck with success stories. Thus far more than 10,000 artists have used BitTorrent’s bundles, generating over 100 million downloads which convert into real sales. Slide from BitTorrent’s advertising deck (via Digiday) Aside from listing its successes the company also reports some intriguing statistics on the consumer behavior of its community. On slide 12 BitTorrent Inc. notes that its community is 33% more likely to buy albums online, makes 34% more DVD purchases, watches 34% more movies in theater and is twice as likely to have a paid music subscription. BitTorrent’s community Because BitTorrent Inc provides no source for the data provided in this last slide we contacted the company last week to find out more. Unfortunately, we haven’t received a response thus far. However, while writing this article we found that the numbers reported in the pitch deck trace back to one of our own articles. The data reported by BitTorrent Inc. comes from music industry group IFPI and details the buying habits of music pirates. BitTorrent Inc subsequently used these piracy statistics to sell its “community†to potential partners. This is interesting for a variety of reasons. First, IFPI’s research doesn’t mention BitTorrent users, but file-sharing music pirates in general. Furthermore, since when does BitTorrent see “music pirates†as its community? Perhaps that’s the reason why the source for the data isn’t provided in the pitch deck (IFPI was mentioned as source in an earlier pitch deck). That said, BitTorrent Inc is right to point out that file-sharers tend to be more engaged fans than the average person. Even the RIAA was willing to admit that. It’s good to see that more and more artists, including many big names, are beginning to recognize this potential too. Even U2, whose former manager is one of the most vocal anti-piracy crusaders, has now decided to give away its latest album for freehoping that it will increase sales of older work. Without piracy, that would have never happened.
  22. In yet another round of silent actions against torrent sites, UK Internet service providers have initiated blocks following court orders against several major proxies. Among them is PirateProxy, a hugely popular Pirate Bay proxy that is currently the UK's 125th most-visited site. Meanwhile, police action continues. After years of legal action, arrests, and placing people like Gottfrid Svartholm and Peter Sunde behind bars, it became clear to copyright holders that trying to directly shutdown The Pirate Bay would not be easy. Instead they decided to target ISPs, companies that are responsive to legal threats in most corners of the world. In time, court orders rendered The Pirate Bay and similar sites blocked, but not for long. Proxy sites enabling access to the world’s largest torrent indexes soon began to thrive, but their time would also come. The biggest proxy battle anywhere on the planet is taking place in the UK, a country where it’s become almost a formality to have sites blocked at the ISP level. Today we can report that yet another silent round of blockades are being put in place. One of the main targets is PirateProxy, an extremely popular proxy service that’s particularly well known in the UK. The site was previously accessible at but moved to a new domain earlier in the year after its domain was blocked. The site switched to during April and successfully maintained its traffic. As can be seen from the Alexa chart below, PirateProxy is the 125th most popular domain in the entire country, an impressive feat for a site that offers nothing but a Pirate Bay block workaround. Notable too is the site’s placing in Ireland, where The Pirate Bay is also blocked by ISPs. As of this morning PirateProxy was the country’s 131st most-popular domain. However, visitors to the site through the major UK ISPs are now beginning to see the familiar “domain blocked†message. The example from Virgin Media, which confirms the existence of a court order, is shown below. Also under attack are the various proxy services available through, a portal which facilitates access to a wide range of torrent and other similar sites blocked by numerous European ISPs. In addition to sundry others, at the moment the site’s PirateBay, KickassTorrents, ExtraTorrent, YTS/YIFY, TorrentReactor, BitSnoop and 1337x proxies are being subjected to UK blockades. This is the second time this year that multiple proxies have been targeted by rightsholders. Back in June its EZTV and YTS proxies were blocked in the UK but were re-established by the site’s operators who vowed to keep putting up new services to maintain service. While blocking proxies continues to be a key weapon of choice, proxies with UK-based operators have greater concerns. As reported in August, City of London police’s PIPCU unit arrested the operator of Immunicity and several other proxies. According to a police response to a Freedom of Information request obtained by TorrentFreak, he now stands accused of a wide range of crimes including breaches of the Serious Crime Act 2007, Possession of Articles for Use in Fraud, Making or Supplying Articles for use in Frauds and money laundering. While plenty of proxies still exist (including several which rotate at the bottom of The Pirate Bay homepage under ‘proxy’), others aren’t doing so well. Visitors to sites including TorrentProxies, Torrenticity, FenopyReverse, FirstRowProxy, GetPirate, H33tUnblock, KatProxy, LivePirate, Metricity, ProxyCentral, KickassUnblock and YifyProxy are greeted with a message from PIPCU that the domains are under police investigation. Finally, and despite efforts by the BBC to have all VPN users labeled as pirates, use of such services to evade blockades and enable geo-unblocking continues. The BPI, PirateProxy and were not immediately available for comments but we’ll update this report when they arrive. Update: The operator of PirateProxy informs us that a new domain is up and operational at

They will play the two unfortunate souls that Rusty drags across the country to the fictional theme park Walley World. Source: Variety (1) (2) - Fox has hired author James Ellroy (Black Dahlia, L.A. Confidential) to pen a remake of the noir thriller Laura. Although Ellroy has seen many of his novels adapted into feature films, this will be a rare appearance for the author as a screenwriter. It also couldn’t be a more perfect film for him to adapt. Originally released in 1944, Laura follows an NYPD detective Mark McPherson as he investigates the murder of a successful ad executive. However, in true noir fashion, the story starts to take some dark and mysterious turns the deeper McPherson goes. Source: THR - Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Triple Nine has secured September 11, 2015 for its release date. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Casey Affleck, Anthony Mackie, Woody Harrelson, and Aaron Paul, just to name a few. Its story follows a group of dirty cops forced to call in a ’999,’ or the police code for “officer down,†so as to rob a bank.John Hillcoat (The Road) will direct. In other release date news, Channing Tatum’s Magic Mike 2 (aka Magic Mike XXL) has moved from a July 3rd, 2015 release date to July 1st. 25. Two studios producing either very similar or identical films isn’t anything new. Over the next year we’ll witness another of these all too familiar showdowns when Disney’s live-action The Jungle Book releases in late 2015, followed by Warner Bros.’ Jungle Book: Origins a year later. Disney has director Jon Favreau helmingtheir adaption of Rudyard Kipling’s short stories about the young jungle boy Mowgli and his animal companions, while Andy Serkis is directing Origins for WB. Already the two films are trying their best to distinguish themselves, as their very different choices in directors indicate. The casting, too, indicates the films are setting on different paths since Disney’s The Jungle Book has chosen Idris Elba for Shere Khan, while WB just announced Benedict Cumberbatch will play the villainous tiger in Serkis’ film. And seeing as Disney’s movie releases first, the rest of their animal voice cast has for the most part been announced – Bill Murray is Baloo, Ben Kinglsey is Bagheera, Scarlet Johansson is Kaa, Lupita Nyong’o is Raksha (Mowgli’s wolf mother), and 10-year-old Neel Sethi will play Mowgli. Today, Warner Bros. plays catch up with the announcement (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Christian Bale will portray their Bagheera, the panther who saves the baby Mowgli, and Cate Blanchet will be Mowgli’s dubious friend, the python Kaa. Also joining the cast are Tom Hollander as a jackal underling of Shere Khan, Peter Mullan as the wolf pack leader, Naomie Harris as a female wolf (presumably Mowgli’s adoptive mother), and Eddie Marsan as her mate. Obviously, both films aren’t pulling their punches when it comes to casting some of Hollywood’s most distinct and recognizable voices for their jungle inhabitants. Disney goes for Oscar-winner Kingsley, WB plays their Batman card with Bale. The Jungle Book nabs the sultry tones of Johannson for the devious Kaa, and Jungle Book: Origins counters with Blanchett. It’ll surely be tough to pick one over other based off the films’ casting alone. Yet, where The Jungle Book already has a leg up is in their choice of the more experienced Favreau, as well as Disney’s history at adapting the Kipling stories before – with both the 1967 animated classic and a 1994 live-action rendition. Warner Bros. is potentially taking a bit of a risk with Serkis, whose most extensive directing experience comes from his time as second-unit director on The Hobbittrilogy. However, Jungle Book: Origins is expected to utilize performance capture technology in order to seamlessly transition the actors’ performances on to CGI-rendered tigers, snakes, and panthers. And there’s no doubting that when it comes to performance capture there’s no one more familiar with the process than Serkis, who will also play an as-of-yet unknown role in the film. Where do you fall on The Jungle Book versus Jungle Book: Origins? Does the cast of one impress you more than the other? Let us know what you think in the comments below! The Jungle Book will premiere October 9th, 2015; The Jungle Book: Origins arrives a year later on October 21st, 2016.
