  1. Apps such as Popcorn Time and Android devices pre-configured for piracy allow complete novices to pirate movies, TV shows and live sports with ease. This hasn't gone unnoticed by anti-piracy outfits included FACT and BREIN, who inform TorrentFreak they plan to tackle the threat. After one and a half decades of mainstream file-sharing, millions of people now have little trouble finding and consuming unauthorized content online. For many the process is no more difficult than browsing the web but due to its technical nature the majority still find it bewildering. Then along came Popcorn Time, software that turned viewing movies into child’s play for anyone with a PC, tablet or phone. But the idea behind Popcorn Time isn’t new. Advanced users of the popular Kodi software (previously known as XBMC) have been enjoying a super-charged Popcorn Time rival for many years. However, that largely requires the mastering of an often confusing third-party addon system. Inevitably, of course, that became streamlined too. Just as Popcorn Time works out of the box, custom installations of Kodi do too. These installers make the previously complex setup process a breeze and in doing so introduce a whole new audience of novices to piracy, just like Popcorn Time has. Of course, this simplicity hasn’t gone unnoticed by anti-piracy outfits. Legal action against Popcorn Time was common in 2014 and continued in 2015. No surprise then that those peddling ‘pirate’ Kodi variants (which have nothing to do with the team behind the project) are now getting more attention. The problem is availability and ease of use. Sold pre-configured in Android set-top box form on both eBay and Amazon, the devices are essentially a one-stop shop for not only pirate movies and TV shows, but also a streaming hub for live sports and PPV. Anyone can have one of these devices delivered next day and learn how to use it in under an hour. Oh, and they run Popcorn Time too. And Showbox. As a result, piracy has never been easier and anti-piracy groups are scrambling to stem the tide. Just last week a seller of ‘pirate’ Android boxes was raided by police in the UK and just days ago Amazon overreacted by banning the entirely legal Kodi software itself, presumably after a copyright holder complaint. Other attacks have been more targeted. Last year the Federation Against Copyright Theft filed a complaint against a popular live sports plugin for Kodi known as Sports Devil. But according to FACT, this was just the beginning of their crackdown on these piracy platforms. “Those engaged in piracy have always been quick to take advantage of technological advances to create new methods to profit from delivering stolen content to a wider audience. The proliferation of IPTV and set-top boxes which can stream content is no exception,†the anti-piracy group told TF. “We are working with our members and partners in law enforcement on addressing these threats and significant measures are being taken by all parties, including online market places, to address the availability of these devices, as well as the apps and add ons that facilitate illegal streams, and bring those responsible to account.†The ‘custom Kodi’ epidemic hasn’t gone unnoticed in the Netherlands either. Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN is currently engaged in legal action against, a seller of “fully loaded†(a euphemism for “piracy configuredâ€) Android boxes. In fact, BREIN is so serious about ending the problem that the case is being sent to the European Court of Justice so that an opinion can be gained on whether streaming from illegal sources represents a breach of EU law. If BREIN wins it won’t end the problem, but it will draw a line in the sand in terms of how such products can be advertised and sold. “We will always look at any system that is aimed at providing access to copyrighted content without consent of the right holders and by doing so is causing damage to the earning potential of right holders and licensed platforms,†BREIN chief Tim Kuik told TorrentFreak. Finally, since these devices are increasingly being targeted at the non-tech savvy, is it possible that buyers are naive to the point that they don’t appreciate their dubious legal standing? Kuik thinks not. “We see that people using such systems tend to be aware they are getting access to unauthorized content even if they don’t know how it works technically,†the BREIN chief concludes. The big question now is what comes next, and what will be the industry’s response? That will become clear in the months and years to come but rest assured, the easier piracy becomes, the more vigorous the response will be.
  2. Tumblr users say they are witnessing a tougher response to music piracy by the blogging platform. A wave of complaints suggest that increased anti-piracy activity by the music industry is resulting in Tumblr more readily banning users as part of a "three strikes" policy. Founded February 2007, Tumblr now processes huge amounts of traffic. According to latest figures from the site it currently hosts more than 223 million blogs containing almost 104 billion posts. In common with all sites of a similar size, keeping on top of what every user posts is a formidable and near impossible task, even with the 300+ employees Tumblr has at its disposal. Nevertheless, effort does have to be made and when it comes to copyright issues the law demands it. The DMCA requires Tumblr to respond to copyright holder complaints by removing infringing content in a timely manner. According to the site’s users, however, a more aggressive response is now being pursued. A large number of recent complaints suggest that music group IFPI is making a renewed effort to target Tumblr in order to weed out users who post copyright music to the site. Since several users have posted Tumblr copyright notices citing IFPI complaints, it seems like a reasonable assumption. But what is really spooking users is Tumblr’s policy of terminating those who have three complaints lodged against their account. It’s been in place for some time but with enforcement against the site seemingly being ramped up, more people are falling into the trap. “As outlined in previous emails, we implement a strict three-strike policy against repeat copyright infringement. Your blog has received three strikes in an 18 month period. Consequently, your account has been terminated. In addition, any new accounts you create will also be terminated,†Tumblr told one user. Of course, anti-piracy bots don’t discriminate between content posted today or 18 months ago so any tracks they find can result in a notice to Tumblr and a subsequent “strike†against a user’s account. As a result, many users are now desperately trying to clear up their post history (using sites like to avoid getting three strikes all at once. To find out what changes may have contributed to the panic TorrentFreak contacted Tumblr for further details. We’re yet to hear back (we’ll update this article when we do) but in the meantime its worth noting that the company updated its copyright notice policy last month. “After removing material pursuant to a valid DMCA notice, Tumblr will immediately notify the Subscriber responsible for the allegedly infringing material that it has removed or disabled access to the material,†it reads. “Tumblr will terminate, under appropriate circumstances, the Accounts of Subscribers who are repeat copyright infringers, and reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to terminate any Subscriber for actual or apparent copyright infringement.†In order for users to be able to contest copyright complaints, Tumblr operates a counter-notification system. However, users including Stewardessme complain that on the third strike she was simply locked out. Her story also highlights the importance of contesting invalid claims early on. “Since the IFPI sent takedowns for two songs, that was two strikes, and I had a previous strike months earlier due to being erroneously accused of a copyright violation by Harper-Collins (the photo in question was not theirs),†she writes. “In my case, the time period between getting the two strikes for music and my account being terminated was zero time; I found out something was wrong when I tried to log into my account.†Since Tumblr is yet to publicly respond to the concerns of its userbase, TorrentFreak asked the company to comment on any changes that could have triggered what is now being perceived as a piracy crackdown. We’ll update here in due course.
  3. Developer 4J Studios is rolling out a big update to all the console versions of Minecraft that adds a lot of features that are already implemented in the PC version. The Minecraft update adds the ability to tame and ride horses, new mobs like wither, bats, and witches, and a bunch of new items. Some other interesting new additions: Zombies and Skeletons can now spawn with different weapons and armor. Added 'Adventure Mode' - You can only break blocks with the correct tools. Added Fireworks - Fireworks interface is accessible from the Crafting Table when you have the ingredients to craft a Firework Star or Firework Rocket. The longer you remain in an area the harder the monsters that spawn in that area will be. You can find the long list of what's included in the update on 4J Studios' website. If that all sounds new and complicated, don't worry. The update also introduces a brand-new Tutorial Word that teaches players how to use these new features, as well as teaching newcomers how to play Minecraft. It also includes a challenge which has you searching this starter world for hidden Music Discs. The new update has already rolled out to Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PlayStation platforms in Europe. The update is still in testing for PlayStation platforms in North America, but 4J Studios said it hopes to have more news on it early this week.
  4. Australia's administration has introduced a Data Retention bill, learning nothing from the court rulings that declare the practice to be in violation of fundamental rights. They plan to log everybody's correspondence and movements - with the idea of using that data to enforce the copyright monopoly. On December 14, 2005, the European Parliament approved legislation that was more Stasiesque than anything previously imagined. Citizens would have every piece of communications logged for a minimum for six months, including from where it was made, so that this could be used against the citizens if need be. Who people talked to, how, from where, and when. In effect, since your mobile phone communicated more or less all the time, every footstep you took through a European city was not only monitored, but recorded for the specific purpose of using it against you. The legislation – the Data Retention Directive – caused an outrage, and rightly so. But the gears of justice turn slowly. On April 8, 2014 – almost ten years later – the European Court of Justice – the highest court in Europe – ruled that the legislation violated a number of fundamental citizen rights, including the presumption of innocence, protection of personal data, and the right to privacy. It didn’t just declare the horrible law invalid from that point on – the European Court of Justice ruled that the law had never even existed. It should come as no surprise that the copyright industry was one of the primary pushers for this legislation. In combination with the typical over-implementation of theIPRED directive, which would give the copyright industry police-like powers to demand logs from Internet Service Providers. They would use this power to find people who had violated their distribution monopolies in sharing knowledge and culture among each other. This two-pronged approach would allow the copyright industry to act as a private police force: force ISPs to save logs of all correspondence, and get the legal right to demand it (a right even the Police didn’t have for crimes at that petty level). The copyright industry has never cared for human rights. Every single debate you go to, they talk about “balancing†fundamental rights against their right to profit. It is not just audacious, it is revolting. First, there is no right to profit for a commercial enterprise, and second, the reason we call the fundamental rights “fundamental†in the first place is that nothing gets to be “balanced†against them. These are rights on the same level as the right to life. Yes, they’re that fundamental. And the copyright industry cares that little. This week, about ten years late, Australia introduced Data Retention of the same model. Or at least that’s what most people think. The bill has been introduced, and yet it hasn’t, because nobody is allowed to read the details of what data is actually required to be retained in the bill yet. (Raise your hand if you’ve heard this kind of story before – an administration playing hide-and-seek with legislative details.) And just as unsurprisingly, the first thing that pops up as purpose for this violatory legislation is copyright monopoly enforcement. Violating fundamental human rights wholesale for entire countries at a time, with the idea of enforcing an entertainment distribution monopoly for a cartoon industry. It’s so disproportionate it wouldn’t even be funny in a cartoon; it’s so out of touch with reality that we’ve even left the Onionesque.

  10. Like many other "hacked" celebrities, Jennifer Lawrence is not happy that her leaked nudes are being distributed freely on the Internet. To deal with the fallout she sent her lawyers after sites helping to distribute the photos. This includes Google, who took action this week after a careful inspection of the infringing material. Over the past several weeks hundreds of photos of naked celebrities leaked online. This “fappening†triggered a massive takedown operation targeting sites that host and link to the controversial images. As a hosting provider and search engine Google inadvertently plays a role in distributing the compromising shots, much to the displeasure of the women involved. More than a dozen of them sent Hollywood lawyer Marty Singer after the company. Earlier this month Singer penned an angry letter to Google threatening legal action if it doesn’t remove the images from YouTube, Blogspot and its search results. “It is truly reprehensible that Google allows its various sites, systems and search results to be used for this type of unlawful activity. If your wives, daughters or relatives were victims of such blatant violations of basic human rights, surely you would take appropriate action,†the letter reads. While no legal action has yet been taken, some celebrities have also sent individual DMCA takedown requests to Google. On September 24 Jennifer Lawrence’s lawyers asked the search engine to remove two links to as these infringe on the star’s copyrights. The DMCA takedown request Earlier this week the request was still pending, so TorrentFreak asked Google what was causing the delay. The company said it could not comment on individual cases but a day later the links in question were removed. This means that both the main domain and the tag archive of Jennifer Lawrence posts no longer appear in Google’s search results. Whether this move has helped Lawrence much is doubtful though. The site in question had already redirected its site to a new domain at These links remain indexed since they were not mentioned in the takedown request. The good news is that many of Lawrence’s pictures are no longer hosted on the site itself. In fact, the URLs listed in the takedown request to Google no longer show any of the infringing photos in question, so technically Google had no obligation to remove the URLs. A prominent disclaimer on the site points out that the operator will gladly take down the compromising photos if he’s asked to do so. Needless to say, this is much more effective than going after Google. Add Rep and Leave a feedback Reputation is the green button in the down right corner on my post
  11. "Game looks better than ever," developer says. Free-to-play Xbox One fighting game Killer Instinct's second season is now available, delivering new features, customizations, and content for single-player and multiplayer. The second season will also look better than the first, as developer Iron Galaxy increased the resolution from 720p to 900p, according toTwitter comments from the studio's community manager. As was the case for Killer Instinct's first season, players can download the game for free and play a free rotating character every week," Microsoft said in a post on the Xbox Wire. You can even play all of the game's modes--including online multiplayer matches--with the free character. If you want more from Killer Instinct season two, you can buy characters individually for $5 each, beginning with TJ Combo and Maya, which are available today. You can also pay $20 to unlock the Combo Breaker Pack, which features eight fighters--you get TJ Combo and Maya right away, with the other six released thereafter on a monthly basis. Third, you can also buy the Killer Instinct season two Ultra Edition for $40. It includes all eight fighters, 16 accessory sets, and 8 "exclusive" costumes designed by Kevin Bayliss, the art director for the original Killer Instinct arcade games. This bundle also includes a copy of Killer Instinct 2 Classic, a port of the 1996 arcade game that features Xbox Live multiplayer and 1000 Gamerscore to earn. Finally, Ultra Edition owners will receive access to new characters and customization items before they are released to everyone else. The first four confirmed characters for Killer Instinct's second season are TJ Combo, Maya, Riptor, and Cinder. The second four were not named outright, but Microsoft teased that they include an "ancient Babylonian sorcerer, an avenging ghost, a battle-hardened war golem, and more." Can you guess who they are? In addition to the new fighters, Killer Instinct season two introduces a new user interface, which should allow for faster access to characters, better statistic tracking, and a "new experience system [that] makes the entire experience of Killer Instinct even better." What's more, Microsoft says the entire fighter roster for Killer Instinct's first season has been rebalanced for season two. The company adds that characters will now even have new techniques and abilities to use. Further still, Killer Instinct season two will feature an "enhanced combo system" that features a brand-new "aerial recapture" option that allows players to catch an opponent in the air and send them crashing back to the ground to continue their combo. "Juggling air attacks has been increased, but the addition of Air Breakers and Air Counter-Breakers mean that there's always two-way interaction in a combo for both players," Microsoft said. Finally, Killer Instinct season two features a new progression system that will allow players to earn costumes, accessories, and other badges "faster than ever before." As part of the new system, individual characters will have levels in addition to their overall player level. "Every mode you play contributes to both character and player level, and 'Fight Challenges' help players rack up experience points (XP) every time they complete a rank," Microsoft said. 12. Kelly Clarkson believes her daughter is 'destined' to be a music legend. The pop star welcomed her first child, River Rose, with husband Brandon Blackstock in June. And she was gushing Tuesday over Twitter about a new gift bestowed upon their baby girl by Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, which she's certain will help River develop some musical prowess. 'Aunt @mirandalambert & Uncle @blakeshelton 4 the win! She is destined 2 b a Country/Rock legend with this! Thnx guys!' she tweeted, including a photo of a personalised guitar with River's name on the neck of the instrument. Kelly also took a moment to swoon over her hubby holding their daughter. 'Okay this is adorable @BBlackstock Had to share! River loves her daddy & morning time!' she wrote. Kelly introduced River to the world on Twitter shortly after her birth, calling her 'the greatest thing on the planet'. The 32-year-old star married husband Brandon last October. Kelly is also stepmother to Brandon's two children from his previous marriage to Melissa Ashworth White. She has spoken in the past about how being a stepmum only heightened her desire to have children of her own. "I honestly never ever used to want to want kids because I'm kind of selfish with my career, but going to soccer games with Seth and doing homework with Savannah -- I just really love it y'all,' she previously told radio host Sean Valentine on his show Valentine In The Morning. 'It's so cool. It sounds so cheesy but it's such a bigger point to life. I really lucked out with the whole kid situation. They're amazing.' In this week's episode we learnt that Lorde was actually the 45-year old father of Stan, Randy Marsh. Lorde also posted video of the episode on her Instagram page. 'Lorde represents something in all of us. The truth that wants to be heard. If I could talk to Lorde right now, you know what I'd tell her? 17. A golden age of comic book movies may be dominating Hollywood right now, but over the past few years there have also been signs of an effort to turn around the thus-far lackluster genre of video game-turned film adaptations. Major developer and publisher Ubisoft has set up its own film studio, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, and has multiple adaptations of major franchises in development; there have also recently been rumor-mongering that Activision-Blizzard is interested in following suit. One company that already straddles the border between video games and movies is Sony, and an adaptation of classic PlayStation 2-era game Shadow of the Colossushas been in development at Sony Pictures for years. Highly praised for its outstanding art direction and simple but effective story, Shadow of the Colossus is about a young man called Wander who appeals to a mysterious and powerful entity to restore the life of a girl called Mono. The entity demands that Wander first slay sixteen colossi – enormous, ancient beings that dwell in different corners of a forbidden land – and the game is based around these sixteen battles. Chronicle director Josh Trank has been attached to Shadow of the Colossus since 2012, but things have been extremely quiet on the news front lately. This isn’t exactly surprising, since Trank only recently finished filming the Fantastic Fourreboot and will soon be moving on to one of Disney’s planned Star Wars spinoff movies. Whether Trank has lost interest in Shadow of the Colossus or whether his full schedule is simple making it impossible to commit to it is unclear, but THRreports that Sony has now moved on – and has tapped Andres Muschietti (Mama) to direct the adaptation. Hanna screenwriter Seth Lochhead, who joined the project last summer, is still attached and is now writing the screenplay with Muschietti supervising. Another mainstay throughout the film’s development thus far is producer Kevin Misher, who is backing the film under his Misher Films banner. Misher’s previous credits includeIt’s Kind of a Funny Story and The Scorpion King, while Muschietti is coming off his feature directorial debut with Mama (after first directing a short film of the same name). As with any video game adaptation, there are going to be challenges when it comes to turning Shadow of the Colossus into a film. The game’s narrative is very simple with minimal dialogue, and the simplicity of the story is arguably what helped to make the game such a powerful experience. It wouldn’t be surprising if the film adaptation ends up having a hefty dose of extra plot added in. With the right writer and director a Shadow of the Colossus movie could definitely make for great cinema, but are Lochhead and Muschietti the creative team needed to make it work? Moreover, when will Shadow of the Colossus manage to drag itself out of development hell and onto the big screen? Only time will tell for certain… We’ll keep you updated on Shadow of the Colossus as development continues.
  18. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man 3 helmsman Shane Black has a finger in several pies right now, including a movie adaptation of the Doc Savage pulp adventure novels, a new installment in the Predator franchise (an “inventive sequel,†as Black calls it), and a film based on Warner Murphy and Richard Sapir’s Destroyerpaperback novels. However, we can now safely say that Black’s next project will be the noir/detective film The Nice Guys. Production on the film will begin this fall (according to the official press release from Warner Bros.), so that the project can make a Summer 2016 release date. Producer Joel Silver, who’s been working alongside Black as far back as 1987′sLethal Weapon (which Black wrote), praised the Nice Guysscreenplay in his official statement, claiming it reflects“Shane’s great cinematic voice.†Similar to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Nice Guys boasts an original script penned by Black and his current writing partner, Anthony Bagarozzi. The similarities don’t end there, as the Nice Guys premise (like Kiss Kiss) draws from detective/Noir genre elements and combines them with buddy movie tropes (an area where Black is something of a specialist) – pairing Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, in a plotline that has been officially summarized as follows. “The Nice Guys†takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, when down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Gosling) and hired leg-breaker Jackson Healy (Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power. Nice Guys is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on June 17th, 2016, which is the same date set for DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon 3. Other titles currently on the docket for arrival that month include Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, Sony’s Uncharted video game movie, and the Mummy property reboot from Universal - making Black’s detective drama stand out all the more as the rare example of a non-tentpole, non-franchise genre movie aimed at adults during that frame. Indeed, as much controversy as Black’s creative decisions on Iron Man 3 continue to stir up within the geek community, the filmmaker certainly has a decent-sized fanbase all his own – and the majority of its members should be more than happy to show up for Nice Guys. Having Gosling and Crowe as the leads won’t hurt, either. The Nice Guys opens in U.S. theaters on June 17th, 2016.
  19. There are plenty of great horror short films out there, including shorts like Mamaand Saw that went on to become feature length movies. Crowd-funding has opened up a whole new avenue to help filmmakers bring their spooky visions to life, and one recent Kickstarter success was short supernatural chiller Kadence, which successfully raised $18,000 for its production budget through donations. According to the synopsis, Kadence is centered on a young man called Kadin, who recently lost his mother and has a“damaging and complex†relationship with his father. Into his life of inner turmoil comes a seductive new neighbor, Marissa, who introduces Kadin to the idea of voodoo and offers him an ancient doll that she insists can work for either good or evil. In the hope of a brighter future, Kadin accepts the offer and uses the doll, but based on the new trailer for Kadence it doesn’t look like things go all that smoothly. The cast of Kadence includes Max Lloyd-Jones (Teen Wolf) as Kadin, Alyson Stoner (Step Up All In) as Marissa and Bailey Chase (Saving Grace) as Kadin’s father, Joel. Director Jacob Johnston has worked as visual development coordinator on a number of Marvel films, including Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers: Age of Ultron; along with some screenshots from Kadence, we also have some artwork for the film, created by Marvel Studios artists Jackson Sze and Anthony Francisco. Speaking in an interview with Media Mikes earlier this year, Johnston explained thatKadence became more character-driven than supernatural-based over the course of its development, and that he wanted to “[bring] back the terrifying elements of visceral human interaction and unraveling – evocative of movies like The Haunting, Silence of the Lambs and Let the Right One In.†When asked if the short could be considered a pitch for a full-length movie, Johnston replied that there is “definitely a potential†for a feature-length version, but he “never wanted to see the project that way.†Kadence is currently in post-production and the Kickstarter page mentions a targeted mid-October release. You can follow the official Facebook page for updates. Let us know in the comments if the trailer for this horror short has left you interested to see more.
  20. Despite some issues with storytelling, Antoine Fuqua’s one-man-army film, Olympus Has Fallen, is a solidly entertaining action movie. The movie follows an ex-secret service operative fighting terrorists in the White House (not to be confused with Roland Emmerich’s White House Down about a wannabe secret service agent fighting terrorists in the White House). While both blockbusters performed well at the box office, Fuqua’s R-rated action film grossed more domestically and cost significantly less to create; thus, Olympus Has Fallen is the one that earned a sequel, titled London Has Fallen. However, Fuqua will not be returning to direct the followup, which was originally intended to begin production May 2014. Millennium Films has instead tapped a newcomer to helm London Has Fallen. THR reported Fredrik Bond (Charlie Countryman) is in negotiations with Millennium to direct London Has Fallen. The film is now aiming to begin production in October 2014 in order to meet the film’s October 2015 release date. Stars of Olympus Has Fallen, Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, and Morgan Freeman, will reprise their roles for the sequel. Christian Gudegast (A Man Apart) wrote the most recent draft of the script. The sequel story follows secret service agent Mike Banning (Butler), U.S. President Benjamin Asher (Eckhart), and speaker of the House of Representatives Allan Trumbull (Freeman) who attend the funeral of the British prime minister in London, where a plot to kill the world’s leaders is revealed. Banning and Asher must work with an MI-6 agent in order to save the world’s most powerful leaders. London Has Fallen seems to be a standard followup to a conventional lone gunman film — a movie trope seen again and again in the action genre that has, arguably, been executed much better than what Fuqua accomplished in Olympus Has Fallen. With so many films following the same basic premise, it’s hard to create a new movie that stands out among the rest (although a drastic differentiation isn’t necessarily needed to do well at the box office). Perhaps Bond will be able to bring a unique eye to London Has Fallen and create enough interesting visual sequences so as to separate the film from others within the genre. Although reviews of Charlie Countrymen were mixed — and skewed more toward unfavorable — Bond’s feature-length directorial debut was at least visually interesting. Whether Bond will be able to translate the skills he demonstrated in his independent film (or improve upon them) in the blockbuster action sequel, London Has Fallen, remains to be seen and it not be worth speculating; although negotiations have begun between Millennium and Bond, the director has not yet signed on for the movie. London Has Fallen is scheduled to premiere October 2nd, 2015.
  21. Horror movies get remembered, legends never die. They just get endlessly rebooted instead. Take Leatherface, the current horror icon du jour whose mythos has been deemed ripe for recalibration; Hollywood has been tinkering with the character since the aughts, blundering through Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes before shifting him from an Ed Gein surrogate to a misunderstood anti hero in 2013′s Texas Chainsaw 3D. Meanwhile, Lionsgate made rumblings just last week about hunting down a scribe to put pen to paper on yet another possible update to his backstory. Turns out those rumblings were pretty serious. Flash forward to today, and now it sounds like the newly gestating film not only has a screenwriter, but it also has its title. Saddled with the straightforward moniker ofLeatherface, the picture’s screenwriting duties will be handled by newcomer Seth M. Sherwood. Millennium Films will provide the financing for production; given the studio’s history of co-producing with Lionsgate, it’s not unreasonable to guess that Leatherface will end up another joint effort between both companies. Word on these fresh developments comes from The Wrap. Apart from name and appellation, there’s not much else that the film’s producers are willing to talk about for the time being; that said, it’s crystal clear that the plan for Leatherface going forward will be to chronicle the chainsaw wielding maniac’s “early yearsâ€, which comes close to lining up with Lionsgate’s original statement of intent. But there’s a greater degree of ambiguity to Millennium’s phrasing than Lionsgate’s; if there existed any doubt over whether fans would be treated to an exploration of Jed Sawyer’s teenage ennui, now there should exist a good bit more. Leatherfacecould just be about a twenty something Jed, adrift as an emerging adult and trying to find his way in life from the business end of a chainsaw. Everyone knows how tough things can get when you’re out on your own in the real world for the first time. How much tougher can they get when you’re a vicious cannibal with innate psychotic urges? Alternately, Leatherface could end up going the Bates Motel route and bring audiences back to Jed’s teen years. This actually seems like the sounder choice; the notion that Leatherface settled on practicing human charcuterie for a living out of the blue seriously strains credulity. That’s saying something for a franchise has, since its inception in 1974, ballooned one serial killer’s criminal notoriety into a handful of movies each more over the top than the last. (Nothing in the series topsTexas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation for sheer weirdness.) So while details are being kept under lock and key, it seems safe to conjecture thatLeatherface will do for Jed Sawyer what A&E’s sleeper hit show has done for Norman Bates. Odds are, Jed’s upbringing will look a lot grimier, but it’s hard to imagine how the film will successfully fuse his coming of age with his penchant for turning people into barbeque. Maybe Sherwood, a recent addition to the “Blood List†(Tinseltown’s annual collection of unproduced horror scripts), has a neat hook for making the concept work. On the other hand, he might have a completely different idea up his sleeve, so take all of this well salted. We’ll keep you in the loop about Leatherface as more information becomes available.
  22. Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have confirmed that filmmaker Garth Edwards will return to direct the followup to his critically/financially successful Godzilla(which released in theaters earlier this year). However, before that, he is going to call the shots on the first Star Wars spinoff movie from Disney and Lucasfilm, for a 2016 launch in mind. As such, Godzilla 2 will be arriving later than other sequels to 2014 blockbusters that’ve been announced so far (the most recent example beingTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2). The Godzilla sequel (which is currently without an official title) now has a concrete release date: June 8th, 2018. WB also recently claimed March and July 2018 release dates for two new DC universe movies; in addition, the studio’s reserved a May date for an animated feature (reported to be a LEGO Movie franchise installment) and a November date for what may be the sequel to the Harry Potter spinoffFantastic Beasts & Where to Find them (which opens in Fall 2016), that same year. Edwards’ Godzilla reboot (read our review) has grossed over half a billion dollars worldwide in theaters to date. Its financial success is, no doubt, in part responsible for Universal’s decision to green light fellow Kaiju-based sequel Pacific Rim 2 and to Legendary’s decision to move forward with development on the Skull Island project (an origins movie about King Kong and the eponymous island of extraordinary giant creatures), which is set to arrive in 2016. It’s a good time to be a fan of giant monster movies. Nothing has been confirmed yet, with regards to the plot of the next Godzilla film. However, back at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, Edwards offered us the following insight on how the movie Destroy All Monsters could be a major source of inspiration for the sequel. (As you can see, he even predicted that his answer would be brought up again, in the future.) “With the exception of the 1954 original, I would say my second favorite film is Destroy All Monsters. I just love the idea of a monster island. Having a world with these creatures in it. I find that fascinating and would like to treat that realistically. I wouldn’t want to limit it to one other foe, I think it’s more fun to – this question will come back to haunt me if we ever do a sequel – but I think multiple creatures make better movies in terms of the image of Gojira.†Again, nothing is set in stone yet, but at the 2014 Comic-Con Edwards presented aGodzilla 2 teaser that alluded to the inclusion of such Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (or MUTOs) as Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah in the sequel. Skull Island will be the first modern blockbuster to explore the concept of a fantastical island populated by enormous creatures, but Edwards’ Godzilla sequel could prove to be a more emotionally and logically-grounded take (yet just as impressive, spectacle-wise). Godzilla 2 arrives in theaters on June 8th, 2018.
  23. In less than two years there will be a new, big budget movie reboot of Power Rangers in theaters. Are you ready? Lionsgate, makers of hit film franchises Divergent (under their Summit Entertainment label) and The Hunger Games certainly are, and they’re hoping to launch a new franchise in the summer blockbuster season by teaming up with Saban, creators of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series. The franchise began in 1993 and every year since, there’s been a new season of Power Rangers, each usually featuring a different cast and theme. On July 22, 2016, we’ll meet another group of young individuals in a re-envisioned take on the property with a big budget film executive produced by Roberto Orci (Star Trek 3). Don’t worry, he already promised not to “ruin†it and actually teased a good idea. Also producing are Brian Casentini, Allison Shearmur and creator Haim Saban. We first learned that Lionsgate and Saban were partnering to launch a new film franchise based on the Power Rangers three months ago, and in the weeks since screenwriting duo Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz were penning the script. Their previous works together include Thor, X-Men: First Class and they’re also working on the upcoming Starship Troopers reboot. Official Power Rangers movie synopsis: From a story by Executive Producer Roberto Orci (TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2) and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, THOR) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world. All jokes aside, there’s absolutely strong potential for an all-ages Power Rangersfilm that drops the camp factor of the older seasons of the series in exchange for a more realistic world, real characters, better action and weapons, tech and mechs that look real. They’ll have the money to do it this time and they’re bringing in proven blockbuster film talent to get the ball rolling. With a July 22, 2016 release date, Power Rangers finds itself competing directly against Warner Bros.’ King Arthur on the same weekend. July is a typically a busy summer month and moviegoers will also have Independence Day 2, an unannounced film from Marvel (we guess Doctor Strange), Universal’s Bourne 5 and the third Planet of the Apes film from Fox all in theaters around the same time. Production will need to begin early next year to meet its release date and with a continuous stream of official announcements in just three months, expect casting announcements and a director selection later this year. Power Rangers hits theaters July 22, 2016.
  24. Well, T-Mobile fans who didn’t want to see the Sprint/T-Mo merger can breathe a sigh of relief: the months-long rumor whispers are now over. And, with Sprint’s desire to return to its former glory comes a change in leadership. Sources say that former Sprint CEO Dan Hesse is out, with Brightstar Corporation founder and CEO, Marcelo Claure, in the leadership position at Sprint. Dan Hesse served as Sprint CEO for 7 years and was present in Sprint’s leadership during the WiMax transition phase. Brightstar is a Softbank subsidiary, so Marcelo Claure comes to the driving wheel at Sprint with some management knowledge – despite the fact that he’s never managed a large corporation before. Claure holds a B.S. in Economics and Finance from Bentley University in Massachusetts. He is the owner of the Bolivar Bolivian soccer team, and under his leadership, Brightstar reported $10 billion in gross revenue in 2013. He is a trustee on the Florida International University Board and has been named a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader. In 2013, Brightstar made it to the Forbes’ list of largest privately-owned companies in the US. Claure has stepped down from Brightstar and will assume the Sprint CEO position on August 11th. Sprint lost another 330,000 customers last quarter and looks to be uprooted in its customer base by T-Mobile by the end of the year.
  25. In the days leading up to the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, Sony/Columbia announced that their Amazing Spider-Man franchise spinoff Sinister Six will see a 2016 release, pushing The Amazing Spider-Man 3 back to 2018. This all came on the heels of mooted Venom director Alex Kurtzman’s vague answers on the state of that film and TASM3. Kurtzman was clear on his main priority, however: developing the possible shared-universe reboot of Universal Studios’ classic line-up of movie monsters, starting with The Mummy. Now, The Wrap reports that Alex Kurtzman will be directing the film, with the intention of getting the supernatural horror flick in theaters by Spring 2016. This updated version of the classic chiller starring Boris Karloff (Frankenstein) – previously re-envisioned in the late 1990s as a Brendan Fraser-led adventure blockbuster – will evidently be set in the present day, aiming for “a four-quadrant, family-friendly action-adventure tentpole†tone. Before Kurtzman and his longtime creative partner Roberto Orci (Transformers, Star Trek) parted ways (for the most part), they worked on the script with Prometheus and Doctor Strange screenwriter Jon Spaihts. Kurtzman and Fast and the Furious franchise writer/producer Chris Morgan are now the “creative godfathers†behind Universal’s new generation of monster movies, having apparently nailed down an approach which will now move the project forward. Previously, The Mummy had already lost two directors in the form of Andy Muschetti (Mama) who left over “creative differences,†and Len Wiseman (Underworld), who stepped away due to a scheduling conflict. Muschetti reportedly wanted to take the film in a far darker direction than the studio preferred, and it sounds like Kurtzman and Morgan have found the type of crowd-pleasing groove they have brought to several other hit franchises. The main question now: what about Sony’s Venom spinoff? Kurtzman is supposedly still attached to direct, but the consensus these days seems to confirm that Sony and Columbia’s enthusiasm for a Shared Spider-Man Universe is indeed (as The Wrap‘s report puts it) “losing momentum.†Kurtzman has yet to officially bow out of directing Venom, but with this 2016 release date for The Mummy - and only the vague idea that Venom will shoot after Sinister Six – Kurtzman may decide to step away from the flailing Spidey-verse and focus on his new, old monsters. Stay tuned for updates as they surface. The Mummy will be released on April 22, 2016.
