  2. 4K Blu-ray is officially on the way. According to Victor Matsuda, Chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association Global Promotions Committee, the BDA expects the specs for 4K Blu-ray to be finalized in the first half of 2015, paving the way for commercial availability by the end of the year. This means we can expect to see actual 4K Blu-ray movies and players available in stores by Christmas next year. Apart from the jump to 4K resolution (3840 × 2160p) we can also expect 4K Blu-ray to support higher frame rates (up to 60fps), an expanded color gamut along with high dynamic range (HDR), as well as HEVC/H.265 encoding to compress 4K movies more efficiently and allow for higher bit rates. The group is currently exploring the possibility of increasing the disc capacity to 66GB or 100GB. The news was confirmed by representatives on the show floor at IFA 2014 in Berlin, which opened its doors to visitors today. 4K movies will be coming to Blu-ray discs and hard drives.
  3. Outlast 2 devs want to explore new ideas and themes. A developer who worked on Outlast, the unsettling first-person survival horror game set in an asylum, has said his team are now working on a sequel. Philippe Morin, the co-founder of Outlast developer Red Barrels, has said the development team still has more ideas on how to approach the survival horror genre. "After shipping the Xbox One version of Outlast, we took some time to analyse our situation and we quickly realised we had at least another horror game in us," Morin said in an interview with Bloody Disgusting. "So, yes, we are working on Outlast 2. We're still a small indie studio, so we'll need a little bit of time to ship our next game, but hopefully it will be worth it." For now, little is known of the Outlast 2 project. The first game shipped on PC in 2013, then later on PS4and Xbox One, and set its story inside a derelict psychiatric hospital. The game was perhaps most recognisable for its use of horror in night-vision mode. However, Morin said the studio is eager to try something different with the sequel. "We have new ideas and themes we'd like to explore and we think we're cooking up something special," he said. The critical response to Outlast was somewhat positive. GameSpot's Outlast review scored it a seven-out-of-ten and concluded: "Outlast's few weak moments are overshadowed by the effectiveness with which it so often gets inside your head and scares the hell out of you." 4. UPDATE: Xbox One, PS4 and PC versions to miss November launch window. Update: Slightly Mad Studios has confirmed to GameSpot that Project Cars has been delayed to March 20. Publisher Bandai Namco said the delay "positions the title away from the competitive holiday scene dominated by household names." A statement issued by studio head Ian Bell reads: "Our goal has always been to deliver a landmark title that encompasses the wishes and desires of racing fans from all around the world; something with features and content powered by the community that provide a truly unforgettable and pioneering experience." "Whilst a tough decision to make, the change in release date allows the game the greatest chance of success and visibility, and the opportunity to polish the game even further to the high standards that both ourselves and our community demand and expect. We're eager for you all to see what we've been working on in just a few months." Original Story: The PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of Slightly Mad Studio's racing sim, Project Cars, will miss its November release date target. When approached by GameSpot, the studio and its publishing partner did not have details to share, but a private message already released to the game's funders has confirmed a delay will be announced shortly. Speaking on the game's forum, which is only accessible to those who helped fund the game, project director Andy Garton explained the Project Cars release date has been pushed back to March 2015. "This delay has come about because a couple of other big games have announced they are shipping around the same time as our planned first date," Garton wrote. "We know it might be a little hard to believe but this would have had a very significant impact on our initial sales." He also said the delay comes because the project still lacks "fixes and polish." Project Cars is the highly realistic looking driving sim developed by the London-based Slightly Mad Studios, which was responsible for creating the EA racer, Need for Speed Shift. 5. Markus Persson's seminal building game due to ship on October 15; US release date not yet confrimed. The long-awaited PlayStation Vita edition of Minecraft will launch across Europe on Wednesday October 15, its developer has revealed. Scotland-based developer 4J Studios, which is handling the port of Markus Persson's breakthrough indie game, revealed the release date on its official Twitter page. A release date for North America has yet to be announced, but because the game's code has now passed certification tests at Sony, it's likely to be close to Europe's. The release date is further confirmation that the PS Vita version of Minecraft will not be cancelled, by neither Sony nor Microsoft, despite the latter software giant purchasing the IP. In mid-September, Microsoft announced it had agreed in principal to acquire Minecraft and its developer Mojang in a deal believed to be worth $2.5 billion. As part of that deal, the studio's three founders--Markus Persson, Carl Manneh, and Jakob Porser--will be leaving the company. At the same time, Microsoft assured that it would not be wiping any versions of Minecraft from Sony's devices such as PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4. Sony, which retains the right to remove the games from its platforms, has not suggested that it is willing to delete any of the games. Since its initial release in 2009, Minecraft has been downloaded more than 100 million times on PC alone. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, released between 2012 and 2013, are still proving popular, with both games regularly holding their spot in the UK all-format top ten. 6. America Confirmed Chinese Government behind Cyber Attacks A US Senate panel has recently confirmed that the cyber attackers associated with the Chinese government have repeatedly infiltrated the computer systems of American airlines, tech companies and other contractors that were engaged in the movement of American troops and military equipment. According to the results of the Senate Armed Services Committee’s year-long probe, the military’s US Transportation Command, also known as Transcom, only know about 2 out of 20 such hacks within a single year. The investigation discovered gaps in reporting requirements and a lack of information sharing among American government bodies that left the US military oblivious to the cyber intrusions of its contractors. The committee’s chairman blamed the Chinese hackers rather that the big defense industry’s cock-ups. He claimed that the peacetime intrusions into the networks of key defense contractors give evidence of China’s aggressive actions on the Internet. However, the cybersecurity expert Dmitri Alperovitch, who is a chief technology officer with the security firm Crowdstrike, pointed out that China had for years shown interest in the logistical patterns of the military of the United States. The Chinese military normally uses secret or top-secret networks disconnected from the Internet, while the American private companies hired by the United States do not. According to the report, from June 2012 to June 2013, there were about 50 hacks or other cyber events into the computer networks of Transportation Command contractors. The investigation found out that at least 20 of those intrusions were successful hacks attributed to an “advanced persistent threat†– this is a term used to describe sophisticated threats normally associated with cyber attacks against governments. Moreover, the probe attributed all of those intrusions to China. As a result, the committee’s top Republican called for a “central clearinghouseâ€, which can facilitate reporting suspicious cyber activity for the contractors.
  7. The Canon EOS 7D Mark II has been confirmed as soon to arrive, but there’s very little information that’s available on Canon’s new digital camera. Canon has tried to do away with the leaks and photos, so the company’s limited the amount of leaks that’re available. Despite the small leaks, here are a few things we know about the EOS 7D Mark II. First, there’ll be no built-in Wi-Fi, nor will the EOS 7D Mark II come with a touch screen (there will be an LCD cover, however). There’ll be a new autofocus system with a dual pixel autofocus feature, which will improve the photography experience. We’ve also been told that you can expect at least 12fps or higher on the EOS 7D Mark II though we know that Canon’s aiming the EOS 7D Mark II at sports and nature photographers with improved autofocus and burst shot performance. The EOS 7D, the last EOS 7D Mark camera released, arrived with an 18MP camera. Sources say that Canon will increase the camera to 24MP (or higher) this time around, though we’ll have to wait and see how the camera measures in the final announcement. The company may also decide to combine the sensor autofocus with the phase autofocus for better detection and shots. This is what we know about the Canon EOS 7D Mark II for now. Canon looks to make its big announcement between September 5th and 8th – making us believe that maybe the camera hidden by a rain cover wasn’t just another camera after all.
  8. Bad Boys 3 is one of those longtime-coming threequels that it’s almost hard to believe in anymore. (Seriously, we have articles about it stretching back to five years ago.) However, as of today it appears that recent talk from producers like Jerry Bruckheimer wasn’t just smoke; as you can see in the latter half of the above video, even franchise star Martin Lawrence confirms that the film is in the works. Here’s the exact quote from Lawrence regarding Bad Boy 3; the actor was stopping by Conan to promote his new TV series with Kelsey Grammar, Partners: ML: I belive so, yes. I just talked to Jerry Bruckheimer yesterday. He said it’s real, they’re working on the script, they’re getting close – and it all looks good. Bad Boys 1 & 2 were of course directed by Michael “Boom-Boom†Bay, who has been almost exclusively wrapped up in the Transformers franchise since 2007. However, right now there are rumblings that Bay may not direct Transformers 5, which is admittedly a scenario the director hinted at before coming on for TF4. If he’s truly burned out there, returning to buddy-cop action may indeed be what he does next – assuming the Bad Boys franchise is still his to helm. Meanwhile, Martin Lawrence has room for a movie in between his TV schedule, and his franchise co-star Will Smith could certainly use a guaranteed box office hit right about now. Seven Pounds, Men in Black III, After Earth - Smith’s power at the domestic box office has been showing signs of wear for almost as long as Bay has been playing with Transformers. Big Will needs a boost, and since it looks like he’sstepping away from Independence Day 2 and MIB 4, Bad Boys 3 may be his last big franchise revisit to cash in. (Because the world is not exactly waiting with bated breath for Hancock 2.) Bad Boys 1 remains an action classic; Bad Boys 2 was still good, but was also like bell toll for the moment when Bay’s filmmaking really started to go over the top. After seeing what kind of better product a more restrained Michael Bay crafted in Pain & Gain, here’s hoping Bad Boys 3 will take things back to the original scale. Bigger doesn’t always equal better. We’ll keep you updated on the status of Bad Boys 3 as more details become available.
  9. First, Amazon Japan, now a new photo. It seems that iPhone 6 rumors and release dates are popping up all over the place. We’ve said here at Inferse that, if the September 30 release date provided a few days ago was true, then Apple would announce the new iPhone 6 models around September 19 or 20. A new image has taken the guesswork out of it all, giving us a clear date (and photo) for the release of the iPhone 6. The iPhone 6 flyer (which was posted via a China Weibo account) that sports the price of the iPhone 6, as well as the release date. The release date simply says, “9 19,†alluding to September 19. The source seems to indicate that the iPhone 6 models will launch in China on September 19th, so we could see an earlier launch in the US, UK, and other places. As of right now, however, we’ve got two launch dates for the device to start selling in China and Japan, but nothing closer to home for Apple’s own home country. The interesting factor about the flyer is that it shows not just the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, but also the 5.5-inch iPhone 6. Earlier rumors stated that Apple didn’t feel confident enough about the 5.5-inch sapphire crystal display passing torture tests, so the sapphire crystal display iPhone 6 models (the 5.5-inch ones, to be exact) would’ve no more than 10 million units at launch. Apple may still have production shortages, but, like the iPad Mini Retina problems, Apple feels it can’t afford to not deliver when it comes to larger-screen iPhones. Leaked documents from the recent Apple/Samsung trial show that Apple realized “customers want what we don’t have†in the larger screens of Cupertino’s top Android rival (Samsung). Rest assured, if the image is legitimate, Apple’ll launch the coveted 5.5-inch iPhone 6 model this September. Both the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones are listed, along with their prices: the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will sell for RMB 5288 ($900USD), the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 selling for RMB 6288 ($1000USD) at launch. Keep in mind that whenever international prices in China and Japan are provided, these prices are often more expensive than what US and UK citizens will pay for the iPhone 6. With that said, it seems likely that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will sell for a starting price of $700USD here in the US for the 16GB model – the same price for an off-contract iPhone 5s in the US. The larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 (16GB) will sell for $800, with the 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB models selling for $100, $200, and $300 more than the entry-level model. One rumor that’s been proven true is that Apple would charge $100 more for the 5.5-inch iPhone 6. For those who’re interested, you’re looking at a $299 out-of-pocket cost with a two-year agreement. The iPhone 6 color on the flyer is black, confirming our statement about black iPhone 6 from some time ago.
  10. Marvel Studios brought the last film installment in Phase II of its Shared Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Age of Ultron, to the 2014 Comic-Con in San Diego, along with the beginning chapter to Phase III, Ant-Man. However, there was curiously no presence for the studio’s next release, the cosmic superheroes adventure Guardians of the Galaxy, which arrive in theaters next week. There was, however, some news about the Guardians sequel. Guardians co-writer and director James Gunn recently said that he would be back to captain the ship on Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - should they sequel happen, he added at the time (wink, wink) – and Guardians co-writer Nicole Perlman later confirmed that Gunn will be scripting theGuardians followup to boot (again, assuming it’s green-lit). Well, we need wonder no longer, as the sequel was officially confirmed to be arriving in Summer 2017, via a video announcement by Gunn and Guardians star Chris Pratt that was shown to the Hall H crowd at the ‘Con. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will arrive on July 28th, 2017, to be exact. That may seem a bit like putting the cart before the horse, but in between early positive reviews and awareness for the firstGuardians installment having reached a fever pitch after a month of heavy marketing, there’s reason to think that Marvel Studios isn’t being presumptuous about giving Guardians of the Galaxy 2 the official go-ahead. There are still two more release dates ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 that have been reserved for as-yet unannounced Marvel Studios films: one in July 2016 and one in May 2017. Doctor Strange seems the most likely candidate to snag the remaining 2016 release date, seeing how it already has a director in Scott Derrickson and a script well into development. Marvel Studios’ plan moving forward is to release one established franchise installment, one new intellectual property film each year, which suggests that the May 2017 date won’t go to another sequel. (The Inhumans, maybe?) Thor 3 seems likely for November of that year, though. Guardians of the Galaxy opens in theaters on August 1st, 2014, followed byAvengers: Age of Ultron on May 1st, 2015, Ant-Man on July 17th, 2015, Captain America 3 on May 6th, 2016, unannounced films on July 8th, 2016 and May 5th, 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on July 28th, 2017, and unannounced movies on November 3rd, 2017, July 6th, 2018, November 2nd, 2018, and May 3rd, 2019.
