  5. And it's not too late to sign up. The previously announced closed beta for upcoming Xbox One role-playing game Fable Legends will begin this Thursday (October 16) when developer Lionhead Studios invites a "handful" of players to try it out, the studio said in a post on its website. The developer also stressed that the closed beta for the RPG will be "real," in that Lionhead hopes you'll provide detailed feedback to help make the game better. "We're inviting fans to help test the game as early in the development process as possible," Lionhead said. "Not only do we want your help with identifying bugs, glitches, and crashes, we also want to hear your ideas, feedback, and suggestions!" Players chosen for the Fable Legends closed beta will help test a "small slice" of the game. Over the following months, Lionhead will slowly introduce more content and features, the studio said, adding that it will also invite additional players to the beta over time. "Ultimately, we hope to have a significant portion of our registrants in game before we leave closed beta," Lionhead said. If you haven't signed up already, it's not too late, as you can still do so through the Fable Legends website today. Lionhead says you can increase your chances of getting invited to the beta by joining its forums, and following its Twitter and Facebookaccounts. If you are selected to take part in the Fable Legends beta, you'll be notified through email. Emails regarding the beta will come from an address ending in Lionhead warns that "anything else is fake!" Fable Legends was originally announced in August 2013, during last year's Gamescom. It is powered by Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4, and lets up to four players journey through the fictional world of Albion together. Players can also choose to become the villain, and are able to issue commands to nefarious creatures about which player to attack and which abilities to use to thwart their advances. Though the beta for Fable Legends begins this year, the full game's release date has not been announced. When it is finally released, Microsoft expects the game to enjoy a long life of 5-10 years. For more on Fable Legends, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
  6. Cloud storage provider Dropbox has had its Mailbox app available on iOS and Android for some time now, but Mac users have been left in the cold – that is, until now. Dropbox tested an early version of Mailbox for Mac back in April but needed a little more time before its release. The time is now ripe. Today, the Mailbox Team announced its Mailbox for Mac release, citing features such as snooze and draft support that will allow you to sync drafts on all your devices and quiet messages until one prepares to sort through his or her messages at a later time. Mailbox has always been effective at helping individuals sort through their email accounts and reduce the number of sitting emails in one’s account. While Mailbox has been a positive to help mobile users organize their lives, we’d still like Mailbox to send faster notifications than, say, Gmail, for instance. Gmail seems to have a quicker email notification response than Mailbox. The Mailbox for Mac public beta release is only for those, however, who are signed up for the beta release. As the Mailbox team said about the Mailbox for Mac beta release, “If you signed up for the wait list, keep an eye on your email over the coming weeks – we’ll be sending you a small attachment that we call a betacoin. This coin will unlock your copy of Mailbox for Mac and turn on the mobile ‘snooze to desktop’ feature.†At least Mailbox users can rejoice for now – the Mac release is soon to arrive. As the Mailbox Team says, stay glued to your email. Mailbox was purchased by cloud storage provider Dropbox in March 2013, and Dropbox has (so far) allowed Mailbox to retain its company name and app.
  7. Facebook, like all other social media sites, is always up to something, but the company’s latest test will give you nothing short of a good laugh. Facebook is now adding a “satire†tag to posts that report funny stories that aren’t true, and the test has been verified for a satirical site such as The Onion. Some may ponder why Facebook would do such a thing, particularly if the best part of the satire is that people seem to believe it’s true, but the company likely wants to prevent the same response that it discovered when the algorithm deception on 700,000 users became public recently. To add to that would be to say that there are some stories that seem unlikely, although it’s often hard to decipher the fact from fiction. If you’ve ever heard of the Washington Post’s report on Sarah Palin joining the Al-Jazeera network, Stephen Colbert’s report on the Tacocopter, or a daily prank site known as The Daily Current, you’ll understand that prank news is a booming business (unfortunately). So far, Facebook has only gone so far as to verify the new satire label and its use for prank sites: “We are running a small test which shows the text ‘[satire]’ in front of links to satirical articles in the related articles unit in News Feed. This is because we received feedback that people wanted a clearer way to distinguish satirical articles from others in these units,†said a Facebook representative. Interestingly enough, only posts from The Onion are bearing the “satire†label at the moment, and only after you return to the browser will you see a “related articles†list that bears the label. The original post that moved you to click on the URL won’t bear the “satire†label, but Facebook will likely improve this feature – if it becomes useful to Facebook users. The feature has been in testing for a month now, and we don’t know how much longer Facebook will conduct testing on the feature until it decides to release it to the Facebook user base. It’s a good measure to prevent reporters and journalists from running wild with cleverly-concocted hoax stories, but what is even more laughable is that fake news sites are allowed to continue to provide publication to fictional events.
  8. Facebook for Windows Phone has seen its Beta mode updated with some of the latest features, but these hadn’t yet been brought over to the official Facebook app for Windows Phone. As of yesterday, however, Facebook decided to finally bring these features to its mainstream users, providing a new video upload feature, Facebook Messenger support, along with an updated design. The new Facebook for Windows Phone update puts the version number at It’s likely that Facebook looks to announce the move of messages from the core Facebook app to Facebook Messenger. The Zuckerberg-led company recently started making the announcement about the move of text messages to the Messenger app for Android and iOS users, telling Windows Phone users that they’d have to wait until a later time. With this new Messenger support, however, now may be the time. If so, please feel free to let us know.
  9. BlackBerry announced that the BBM app would make its way to Windows phone devices as far back as February of this year, but this announcement was followed by months of nothing. As of today, however, the waiting period is over. Windows Phone users who love BlackBerry’s Messenger app can now get their hands on the BBM app on their Windows Phone. The BBM for Windows Phone brings a few important factors to the text messaging experience, such as “chats,†“feeds,†and “contacts.†BBM’s “chats†page allows you to start individual or group messaging; “feeds†lets you stay up to date with what’s going on with your contacts, and “contacts†allows you to maintain information about your contacts or add new ones as you meet new people and make new friends. The new “pin†feature allows you to “pin†an interesting IM conversation you’re having to your main screen. You can press the “pin†symbol at the bottom of the chat page, and go to your home screen to find that the chat you just pinned to the start screen is now a Live Tile – that can also be moved around like other Live Tiles on the start screen. This allows you to maintain easy access to a chat that you’re involved with often, and keep up with a friend that’s truly close to you without having to make your way through an app or two to find where you left off in the conversation. While BlackBerry says that this feature is something unique to Windows Phone users that can’t be done on any other platform, the “pin†feature is unique in how it works – but the concept is the same. It’s true that Android and iOS users can’t “pin†a conversation in a text message to their home page for example, but Android widgets allow you to access your favorite contacts and conversations with just the tap of an icon.
  10. If you’ve joined the OS X Beta Program, then you’re in luck. Apple’s released a new build for OS X Yosemite yesterday, and the build is newer than the developer build Apple released earlier this week. OS X Yosemite Beta brings new bug fixes, but creates some bugs as well – bugs that Apple makes known to its users (after all, it is a Beta program). For one thing, you’re bound to run into a problem with playing Netflix content by way of the Safari web browser. iPhoto’s edit mode won’t show the picture you want, but instead provides a black screen. Apple says that the black screen “may†happen, showing that it doesn’t occur in all cases (but some). Family Sharing accounts’ll notice that the shared history purchase page is disabled at the moment. This’ll likely be implemented within later updates, seeing that OS X Yosemite is in beta mode. AirDrop file share’s having some problems within the OS X Yosemite Beta mode, as you’ll experience trouble sharing files with other MacBooks as well as viewing nearby Macs. Initially, iCloud Drive may show nothing in your cloud storage. Apple says that you can simply restart to correct this problem. iPhoto and Aperture are required to experience Yosemite, but having both on your Mac will likely cause problems with Photo Stream and iCloud Photo sharing when using OS X Yosemite.
