  11. Coppersurfer, one of the largest torrent trackers on the Internet, has been targeted by copyright holders throughout Europe. Most recently, a German court ordered a local hosting provider to hand over the personal details of its operator. In response the Greek Pirate Party has decided to adopt the tracker, providing political support in defense of people's freedom to share information. In recent years has quickly become one of the most used BitTorrent trackers. Running on the beerware-licensed Opentracker software, the standalone tracker offers a non-commercial service which doesn’t host or link to torrent files itself. Despite the content neutral setup, the tracker and its hosting providers have become the targets of various copyright holder groups in recent months. In April, Coppersurfer was forced to leave its Dutch hosting provider following a complaint from Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN. The tracker then moved its service to a German hosting provider, but that didn’t end the trouble. The tracker’s operator recently informed TF that a German court ordered the tracker’s hosting provider to disclose the personal details of the associated account holder. The request came from the German lawfirm Rasch, who act on behalf of several major music labels. The order (pdf) came as a surprise to Coppersurfer’s operator as he complied with previous takedown requests from the same lawyers, and even offered them a hash blocking tool. The copyright holder, however, appeared determined to shut the site down. Facing this mounting pressure the operator decided to look for help, which he found in the Pirate Party of Greece (PPGR). The Greek Pirates inform TF that they have decided to officially adopt the tracker to protect it from further threats, by any means necessary. “The owner of the tracker has faced the absurd requests of the copyright lobby many times in the past, even though he was being wholly lawful. After these attacks we decided to adopt the tracker,†the PPGR board tells us. “Our decision gives political support to the tracker, which is very important in this context,†they add. The party also informed the German Pirate Party and MEP Julia Reda about the recent court order, and will see if there are any options to get it overturned. Meanwhile, the tracker is hosted in another European country, operating in accordance with local laws. The Greek Pirates aren’t under the illusion that the tracker will be shielded from legal pressure under their wings. However, they are prepared to fight the “copyright lobby†in order to protect the free flow of information. “Unfortunately, our experience, but also our knowledge of similar cases so far predisposes us to believe that we will see this kind of incident again. But they can’t scare us. On the contrary, it gives us courage to work harder in order to achieve a free society,†the PPGR board says. “A society where the exchange of ideas, files and information will be treated as what they really are: a basic human need,†they add.

  15. Demonii, the largest standalone BitTorrent tracker on the Internet, has been forced to ban more than 10,000 'copyright-infringing' torrent hashes. The blocking measures follow pressure from a music industry lawfirm applied to both the tracker and its hosting company. The tracker disagrees with the "bullying" tactics being employed. At any given point in time, millions of people are sharing files via BitTorrent. The most used trackers process millions of requests per minute, serving between 15 and 30 million people at once. Demonii is one of these top BitTorrent trackers. The standalone tracker offers no torrents but merely coordinates communication between people who share files via sites such as The Pirate Bay. Technically speaking a tracker is similar to a DNS provider, it’s a ‘phone book’ which points people to content without knowing what it is. However, according to German lawfirm Rasch, trackers have a responsibility to block infringing hashes if they are asked to. Earlier this year the lawfirm took action against the hosting companies of several standalone trackers after they failed to block “infringing†hashes. The operator of Demonii, currently the most used BitTorrent tracker, informed us that they were contacted too. “First we received an email from Rasch asking us to remove about five torrent hashes for one music artist. Since the firm is merely an agent and not the actual copyright owner, I asked for proof that he is the lawful agent,†Demonii’s operator explains. The lawfirm provided the requested paperwork and to avoid problems with the hosting company, Demonii blocked the five hashes. This was the first time that Demonii had ever blocked content, which is nothing more than filtering a piece of HEX string. However, it soon became clear that Rasch was just getting started. In the weeks that followed the company filed complaints against 10,000 allegedly infringing hashes which pointed to content from various copyright holders. Again, Demonii requested proof that the firms was acting as a lawful agent, but this time Rasch declined. Instead, Rasch lawyer Mirko Brüß told the operator that anyone can report copyright infringements. “Anybody can notify you of an infringement, even if they are in no way affiliated with the rights owner. Please understand that we will not go above and beyond what is provided by the law in order to satisfy your personal requests,†Brüß wrote in an email. “It is your decision to act upon the information sent to you. But with regards to blocking content wrongfully, the content owners could approach us with claims for damages for sending a false notice to you,†he added. The Demonii operator disagrees with this assessment and calls out the claim as incorrect. “If what he is saying is right, in theory, I can go send an email to his hosting provider to remove their site? After all I am not the owner and no way legally affiliated, but I can still claim the take down?! — No.. I can’t, and neither should he,†he tells TF. However, with pressure shifting to the tracker’s hosting service (which had given the tracker 24 hours to comply), Demonii was eventually forced to block all reported hashes. Describing the lawfirm’s tactics as “bullyingâ€, the operator decided to move away from its hosting company to one that may be more resistant to this type of pressure. “We have moved to a different hosting provider, one which we hope will take the matter more seriously and not just bend over backwards for any outrageous claim and takedown request where ownership can not be proven,†Demonii’s operator says. The previous hash blocks have also been lifted, so Demonii is starting over fresh and uncensored again. The move hasn’t stopped the lawfirm from sending more blocking requests, but for the time being the tracker is opting to ignore these. The tracker stresses that it respects copyright law. However, it will only respond to correct takedown notice and not to “bullying†tactics.
  16. Demonii, the most important public BitTorrent tracker on the Internet today, is dealing with unprecedented demand. Currently running in maintenance mode, the popular tracker recently smashed its own record by tracking in excess of 36 million simultaneous peers while managing 4.8 million torrents. In order to operate at their peak the majority of public torrent indexes need the invaluable assistance of so-called tracker sites. Trackers use the IP addresses in their databases to direct users’ torrent clients to where content can be found. In recent years OpenBitTorrent, PublicBT and became three of the most important trackers in the BitTorrent ecosystem but have largely remained offline since January. As reported last Wednesday, all had legal issues in Germany. Nevertheless, the BitTorrent system hasn’t collapsed. Aside from the wonders of DHT and PEX, a rising star in the tracking scene has been shouldering much of the load. Founded less than two years ago, Demonii has become the largest and most reliable tracker on the Internet today. In February the tracker broke records by smashing through the 30 million simultaneous peer barrier, a landmark achievement representing a staggering two billion connections every day. But the site wasn’t finished producing big numbers. As can be seen in the image below, during periods last month the site was serving more than 36 million peers, a new record for the increasingly popular tracker. Given the increase in number of peers, it perhaps comes as no surprise that the number of torrents being tracked by Demonii has also increased. Back in February when the tracker broke the previous record, Demonii was tracking in excess of 4.2 million torrents, more than the top three trackers were serving in 2013, combined. As can be seen from the image below, 4.2 million torrents is now history, with Demonii already having reached the 4.8 million torrent milestone. Today, however, Demonii is not running on all cylinders. Speaking with TorrentFreak the site’s operator confirms that the service is currently running in maintenance mode. “Nothing too dramatic is happening, we just turned some things off while we try to sort out internal issues/maintenance,†he reports. While the downtime could last another 12 to 24 hours (or more) the site is definitely coming back. “The downtime is always lame, but rest assured all is being done so that the Demonii tracker will be online for long term,†TF is informed. While that will be welcome news to the site’s supporters, breaking more records with the current setup probably won’t be possible until changes have been made. Noting that bandwidth costs are high “but worth every cent for the torrent communityâ€, Demonii’s operator says growth is being limited by software. “The tracker software has been starting to reach its limits in terms of connections. We have been working with different groups of developers who have created their own implementation of a torrent tracker software. But we are not there just yet unfortunately,†he notes. Nevertheless, the records achieved recently were well received, particularly those connected to newer technology. Although tiny in comparison to IPv4, Demonii’s IPv6 stats have increased 100% in just six months. “The growth I am most impressed with is the IPv6 stats. Doubling in less than half a year. Shows where the residential internet is headed. An IPv6 world will be a great world,†Demonii’s operator concludes.
  17. After more than ten years, TS-Tracker, one of the oldest and most sought-after German trackers, was shut down by its staff yesterday. At the beginning of the year, they had to wipe their whole database under some shady circumstances and came back with a three-year-old one, and now it seems like they're gone for good, at least according to several staff members. TS is just the most recent of several large German private trackers (myT, HDS, quorks) that were voluntarily taken offline by their staff in the last few months. Coincidence? Well, maybe.

  20. Coppersurfer, one of the largest BitTorrent trackers on the Internet, has been taken offline after it refused to block 'infringing' hashes. Hosting provider LeaseWeb pulled the plug on the site after a tip-off from Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN, who also demanded that the site operator should step out of anonymity. In recent years has quickly become one of the most used BitTorrent trackers. Running on the beerware-licensed Opentracker software, the standalone tracker offers a non-commercial service which doesn’t host or link to torrent files themselves. The free service coordinates the downloads of 10 million people at any given point in time, processing roughly billions of connections per month. However, since last weekend has been offline. Responding to a complaint from Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN, hosting provider LeaseWeb suddenly pulled the plug. According to a LeaseWeb rep “torrents are illegal†and the company had no other option than to shut down the tracker. This came as quite a surprise to the operator, since his service doesn’t link to or host torrent files. In fact, Coppersurfer doesn’t know what titles are tracked or where all the corresponding torrents are stored. Hoping to resolve the matter the tracker operator reached out to BREIN, pointing out that he provided a content neutral service. However, the Hollywood-funded anti-piracy group disagreed. One of the problems for BREIN is that The Pirate Bay uses Coppersurfer as a default tracker. This means that all torrents shared through the site are automatically tracked by the service. “Your claim that a tracker can be compared to a neutral internet service provider is not correct. The Coppersurfer tracker is far from neutral. You are aware that your tracker is used for torrents of illegal websites like ThePiratebay,†BREIN’s Pieter Haringsma replied. “There is no question about the fact that ThePirateBay is an illegal website, which is being blocked in numerous countries and, whose founders have been sentenced to jail. You know that your tracker is added automatically to all the torrents that are uploaded to that website,†he added. Interestingly, BREIN is willing to make a deal with the tracker owner if he agrees to blocklist infringing hashes. In addition, BREIN demands that the owner identifies himself claiming that all commercial services are required to so under the European e-commerce directive. “That is why you have the obligation to check [The Pirate Bay] and blacklist all illegal titles of that site, because you know that your tracker is added automatically to all the torrents that are uploaded to that website,†Haringsma wrote. “Once you have stepped out of anonymity and have implemented measures to avoid illegal use of your tracker by blacklisting illegal torrents from ThePiratebay, BREIN is prepared to discuss the terms of a proper [takedown] procedure that Coppersurfer should put in place, including e.g. enforceable penalties,†he added. The Coppersurfer operator is surprised by the broad demands and has chosen not to comply. If a standalone tracker should ban hashes, should browsers and torrent clients do the same? He also fails to see how a non-profit service that doesn’t even require a website, can be seen as online commerce. While LeaseWeb is no longer an option, the tracker operator hopes to put the service back online at another hosting company. Another option would be to donate it to an organization that’s dedicated to protecting free speech digital rights. “My plans now are to seek a new home. I’m searching for a cheap server with 100Mbps/unmetered connection,†he informs TF. “I could also give the tracker for free to any organization related to free speech and human progress,†he adds. TF contacted LeaseWeb for a clarification on the “torrents are illegal†but at the time of publication we hadn’t heard back. The above example suggests, however, that hosting torrent related services in the Netherlands is getting more difficult.
  21. Strike is a new torrent search engine and as far as we know the first to index not only all public trackers but also BitTorrent's 'trackerless' Distributed Hash Table. With a less is more philosophy, Strike tries to intelligently return only the best results and operates with zero advertising. A friendly API is provided for developers alongside a no-logging policy. There are dozens of torrent site engines online today but to attract our attention new entrants have to stand out from the crowd by doing things somewhat differently. Strike has only been online for a few days but it certainly fits that billing in a number of ways, despite its plain appearance. Indexing Firstly, and in common with many other sites, Strike indexes public torrents. CreatorAndrew Sampson informs TorrentFreak that his engine indexes all available public trackers, which is clearly a good start for a site of this type. However, Strike boosts its indexes by also scraping BitTorrent’s Distributed Hash Table. DHT search engines have appeared in the past but as far as we know, Strike is the first site to utilize both sets of resources. We have covered DHT in detail in the past, but Sampson offers a quick refresher. “DHT basically is a second P2P protocol aiming to replace trackers. It stores pairs of info hashes and updates the swarm if it receives announce messages. When it comes to DHT every [torrent] client is announcing themselves as being present. Because of this I’m able to scrape millions of torrents in a decentralized manner; not having to rely on trackers themselves,†the dev told TF. “My scraper can query DHT with the respect to an info hash and doesn’t have to use a tracker or know a peer that is part of the swarm before. If one of the peers it contacts supports the sharing of metadata it only needs the info to retrieve the .torrent file from the swarm. This is what effectively puts this search engine ahead of everything else.†In order to get information on torrents, Strike’s DHT “scraper†behaves like a regular torrent client, connecting to swarms and exchanging a few bytes with other peers. This enables it to gain access to all the peers in the swarm and the data they have. “It bounces around from infohash to infohash scraping up meta data, writing it to disk where it’s queued up to be stored in the database. It’s highly bandwidth and hardware intensive, (I have 5 servers constantly working on it) But the end results are millions of torrents for end users to search through quickly,†Sampson says. Search The project also has an interesting approach to search and related results which grew out of QTBot, an AI tool originally written for Skype. “Her job was to not only learn to be your personal assistant or friends, but to do sentiment analysis to determine the best course for keeping a group conversation lively,†Sampson explains. “I saw this technology as going to waste, for a while I thought about a better way to apply it and the obvious thing was always to build a search engine of some sort. Well, after one too many fake download button clicks with malware were forced down my pipe it was obvious what kind it was going to be.†Within Strike, QTBot caches common terms and phrases to see which results it should present first. ‘She’ recognizes that high seeder counts are important but also considers other factors, including whether to present the latest version of a release if users search for them enough. Presentation No doubt about it, Strike is one of the cleanest, most tidy torrent sites around. There is no clutter in the interface and strictly no ads. “From the start I knew this would be a completely non-profit project, so sorry to all users, but there won’t be any hot singles in your area or fake download buttons filled with malware. I wanted to offer the cleanest experience I could for users while also keeping them safe,†Sampson notes. Clicking on search results brings up a details page which reveals all content inside each torrent, useful in the unlikely event a user is presented with a suspect file. Files can then be accessed via a torrent or magnet link, with RSS and Twitter announcing options for those that way inclined. Overall In a sea of advertising, pop ups and irrelevant results, Strike certainly stands out as one of the cleanest torrent sites around. Those looking for the most comprehensive sets of results on the rarest of content might be a little disappointed, but most things even moderately mainstream are well catered for. Having both DHT and public tracker indexing makes this site unique while its no logging policy and dev-friendly API add icing to the cake. Torrentfreak

  23. There will be some downtime this week, it may be 10 minutes, it may be a whole day or more. When this downtime will occur is unknown as of now. Just a heads up so you guys are aware
  24. While other popular BitTorrent trackers suffer continued downtime, Demonii has proven to be a safe bet with file-sharers. This week the tracker broke through the barrier of 30 million connected peers, handling no less than two billion connections per day. Today we take a look at what's powering one of the largest BitTorrent infrastructures. The Internet is littered with torrent indexes and search engines, all offering a wide range of media content and other entertainment to their visitors. For this content to travel from one part of the world to another, the BitTorrent ecosystem needs reliable trackers. Unfortunately, reliable public trackers are much harder to find. In recent weeks prominent trackers such as OpenBitTorrent and PublicBT have been offline most of the time. Even more concerning, the associated websites alsostopped advertising the tracker addresses in public, suggesting that they may retire in the near future. Amidst all this trouble there is one tracker that stands out in a positive way. Founded less than two years ago, Demonii has grown out to become one of the largest and most stable trackers. This week it broke a new record by serving more than 30 million people at the same time, which is a 100% increase compared to last year. At the time of writing Demonii is serving 30,508,293 peers and 24,402,432 seeds, while tracking a total of 4,209,378 torrents. That’s more than the top three trackerswere serving in 2013, combined. TF spoke to the operator of Demonii who told us that they are keeping the tracker online with relatively few resources. It currently runs smoothly on ‘just’ three dedicated servers. “At this moment we are hosting the tracker on three medium-sized dedicated servers which are linked up to each other and are synced to always be up to date. This adds redundancy if anything fails and also eases the load overall,†Demonii’s admin says. Despite the modest setup, the number of connections it handles per day is mind-boggling. The servers are processing a constant stream of data at the rate of 180 Mbit per second, and the graph below shows the UDP connections for one of the servers averaging around 600,000 per minute. Across the three servers this adds up to well over two billion connections per day. The 30 million peer milestone and the connection statistics make Demonii the largest currently active BitTorrent tracker. While some have argued that trackers are obsolete, as DHT and PEX allow peers to share the same information among each other, Demonii’s operator disagrees. “PEX and DHT are ‘good enough’, but some people out there are looking for something better than ‘good enough’,†he tells us. “Having trackers speeds up the initial peer finding significantly. Sure, it’s not an absolute must in order to download via BitTorrent but while there are functional trackers out there, I really don’t see and understand why people argue that they should be avoided and made obsolete,†he adds. Aside from speeding up initial connections, trackers are also essential for those who use proxies, as they often have DHT and PEX disabled to prevent their real IP-addresses from leaking out. In any case, Demonii is not going away anytime soon. The tracker is already on its way to another milestone. The 40 million peer milestone will probably come into view later this year, but first there are a trillion more connections to process.
