  2. The kingdom is reportedly willing to pay Argentinian maestro Lionel Messi $400 million-a-year for the twilight of his career. Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi(File Photo) Saudi Arabia’s tab for using icons of western popular culture to enhance its stature and sway on the global stage could soon rise by another nine figures. The kingdom is reportedly willing to pay Argentinian maestro Lionel Messi $400 million-a-year for the twilight of his career. While a huge sum, even by football’s bloated standards, it’s just the latest in a string of moves by the petrostate’s rulers, who are plowing billions into sports, art and music. Saudi Arabia hopes the spending, powered by excess revenue from its role as the world’s biggest crude exporter, will excite its burgeoning younger generation and supercharge its tourism industry. Critics say the efforts are aimed at varnishing an international image battered by a brutal war in Yemen and murder of Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. Overseeing this so-called soft power play is Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who’s simultaneously spending billions to build Saudi Arabia’s military capabilities, with what is now the world’s fifth-largest arms budget, and pursuing a more opportunistic diplomatic track that’s repeatedly put Riyadh at odds with Washington. “It’s a complete reorientation of the kingdom,” says Kristin Smith Diwan, senior resident scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington. “They want to convince people this is a welcoming place, not a threatening one.” Sporting Bets The magnitude of its spending has made Saudi Arabia impossible to ignore for the world’s political and business elite. The kingdom’s economy was one of the fastest growing in the Group of 20 last year, boosted by the highest oil prices in about a decade, and it now boasts the world’s seventh-largest sovereign wealth fund, deploying billions both at home and abroad. Sports assets have been high on the shopping list. In late 2022, Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo signed a contract with Al-Nassr FC worth a reported $200 million a year. Little more than a year prior, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund led a consortium that acquired English Premier League football club Newcastle United FC for more than £300 million ($373 million). Saudi Arabia is considering a joint bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, having witnessed the recent success of the tournament in neighboring Qatar. The PIF has also reportedly earmarked billions of dollars to finance its LIV Golf tour, which has attracted stars including Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, and last year considered a $20 billion attempt to add Formula 1 motor racing to its growing portfolio of sports investments. Elsewhere, venues in and around Jeddah and Riyadh have hosted mega-money boxing bouts featuring everyone from heavyweight champions Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk to up-and-coming fighters Jake Paul and Tommy Fury. “Sport is essential to what Saudi is doing as it moves toward a world where it is less dependent on oil revenues,” according to Simon Chadwick, professor of sport and geopolitical economy at Skema Business School in Paris. Saudi Arabia wants tourism to account for 10% of its gross domestic product in 2030, by which time it hopes to be attracting 100 million visitors a year. In 2022, the kingdom hosted about 16 million visitors, including tourists, business travelers, those coming to see relatives residing in the country and overseas Muslims on the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, a Saudi Tourism Authority representative said at a press briefing in Dubai this month. To reach its target, Saudi Arabia has been looking beyond just professional sports. From an Andy Warhol exhibition, art biennale and electronic music concerts in the desert, to celebrity chef restaurants in Riyadh and partnerships with top culinary schools, it’s spending heavily to create an entertainment and leisure industry from scratch. High-end hotels Aman Resorts and Banyan Tree have already been drawn to Al-Ula, an ancient oasis city in Saudi Arabia’s northwest that’s being transformed into a luxury travel destination on a budget of $35 billion. US pop stars Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey and John Legend have all recently performed there. Phillip Jones, chief tourism officer of the country’s Royal Commission for Al-Ula, said that, while some artists still refuse to visit the kingdom, the smart money is in Saudi Arabia looking for opportunities to invest. “They recognize that this country is about to explode in terms of financial capacity growth,” he said. And it’s not just the private sector. In recent years, the UK and France have signed cultural cooperation agreements with Saudi Arabia. ‘False Impression’ The sudden influx of sporting and cultural events is popular in the country, which until only recently enforced rules forbidding men and women from mixing together in public. This drastic change puts Saudi Arabia’s strategy on “a much grander scale” than Gulf neighbors, such as the United Arab Emirates, which have also opened up to western culture, according to Lina Khatib, director of the SOAS Middle East Institute. But not everyone is buying the hype. Campaigners say Saudi Arabia is deflecting attention from a poor domestic record on free speech and other human rights. “I’m glad these changes are happening, but it gives a false impression of our country,” Lina Al-Hathloul, Brussels-based head of monitoring and advocacy at human rights group ALQST, said of MBS’s soft power blueprint. She said once this strategy of using culture, sports and the arts to rehabilitate the Crown Prince’s reputation and woo western investors and visitors yields dividends, “violations we point out will no longer be effective.” Lina Al-Hathloul’s sister, Loujain Al-Hathloul, a prominent women’s rights activist in Saudi Arabia, was arrested in 2018 and later jailed on charges of inciting regime change and seeking to serve foreign agendas. She was released in 2021 but subject to a travel ban. Al-Ula’s metamorphosis is just one project feeding into MBS’s ambitious Vision 2030 plan to overhaul Saudi Arabia’s economy — something not universally welcomed within its borders. Members of the Howeitat tribe have been arrested for resisting forced evictions linked to the giant Neom megacity project and risk the death penalty, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said in a statement on May 3. A representative for Neom declined to comment. The Saudi government’s Center for International Communications didn’t respond to requests for comment. Earlier this month, Fahd Hamidaddin, CEO of the Saudi Tourism Authority, led a large contingent taking part in the annual Arabian Travel Market exhibition in Dubai. He said it was only the third time Saudi Arabia had participated in the trade show that launched 30 years ago. Addressing reporters at a luxury hotel during the event, Hamidaddin sat in front of a large screen flicking images of a smiling Messi in his capacity as a Saudi tourism ambassador. The footballer and his family were shown weaving baskets, petting Arabian thoroughbreds and playing in amusement parks during a visit to the kingdom. “To those that are skeptics, if you want to put effort in talking and saying things about Saudi, I would encourage you to see it before you make that effort,” Hamidaddin said at the event.

  4. The spirited Israeli actor and singer portrayed the iconic character more than 3,500 times over more than four decades. Israeli actor and singer Chaim Topol, or Topol, UK, 8th April 1974. (Photo by Evening Standard/Hulton Archive/Getty Images) Chaim Topol, the spirited Israeli actor and singer who, one season following another, portrayed Tevye the milkman in Fiddler on the Roof on stages all around the world and in an Oscar-nominated turn in Norman Jewison’s 1971 film adaptation, has died. He was 87. The Associated Press, citing Israeli leaders, reported that Topol died Thursday in Tel Aviv. Israel’s first international movie star, Topol also played famed Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei in Galileo (1975); an American scientist, Dr. Hans Zarkov, in the cult sci-fi classic Flash Gordon (1980); and Milos Columbo, a Greek smuggler and ally of Roger Moore’s James Bond, in For Your Eyes Only (1981). As Polish family man Berel Jastrow, he was central to the plot of two acclaimed 1980s ABC miniseries, The Winds of War and War and Remembrance, both based on Herman Wouk novels. In a pairing that a matchmaker would surely appreciate, Topol by his own estimation connected with Tevye more than 3,500 times over more than four decades, starting with a Hebrew-language production in his home country when he was 30. He also starred as the Jewish dairyman and father of five daughters — and performed such signature songs as “Sunrise, Sunset,” “Tradition” and “If I Were a Rich Man” — on the West End in the mid-1960s and on Broadway in 1990-91, receiving a Tony nomination in the process. “How many people are known for one part? How many people in my profession are known worldwide? So, I am not complaining,” he said in a 2015 interview. “Sometimes I am surprised when I come to China or when I come to Tokyo or when I come to France or when I come wherever and the clerk at the immigration says, ‘Topol, Topol, are you Topol?’ So yes, many people saw it [Fiddler], and it is not a bad thing.” The oldest of three kids, Chaim Topol was born in Tel Aviv on Sept. 9, 1935. His father, Jacob, was a plasterer, and his mother, Imrela, a seamstress. He worked as a printer for a newspaper while taking high school classes at night, then lived on a kibbutz for a year. He gained experience as an entertainer in the Israeli army, where he acted and sang in a traveling theatrical troupe. After the service, he honed his skills performing around the country for three years in a kibbutz theater group that he and his friends had founded in 1957. Topol had a major breakthrough when he was cast as a Middle Eastern immigrant struggling to fend for his family in Israel in Sallah Shabati (1964). A huge hit at home, the social satire was nominated for the Oscar for best foreign-language film, and Topol, then 29, received a Golden Globe for most promising male newcomer for playing a character in his 50s. (Topol had performed the title role in a play while in the army.) Two years later, he made his English-language film debut alongside Kirk Douglas in Cast a Giant Shadow (1966), playing a Bedouin leader in the drama set amid the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. At the urging of friends, Topol came to New York to see Zero Mostel star as Sholem Aleichem’s Tevye in the original 1964-72 Broadway production of Hal Prince’s Fiddler on the Roof, featuring music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins. He then played the milkman for 10 weeks in Israel, stepping in for Shmuel Rodensky, who had taken ill. Prince had seen Topol in Sallah Shabati and invited him to test for the lead in the London production of Fiddler as it moved from Broadway in 1966. “They could not believe it was me when I went to the audition because I was too young! They expected Sallah, who was old. Not me!” he said. “I knew no English. I studied the songs. I sang ‘If I Were a Rich Man’ and then another song from Fiddler. It was the first audition in my life. “They asked how many times I had seen the show. I said maybe four times. They couldn’t understand how I knew all the movements, all the songs from the show. I said, ‘No, you don’t understand … I’m currently performing in Fiddler, in Tel Aviv!” After he was hired, he began to go by Topol after the British producers had trouble pronouncing his first name. He landed the lead in Jewison’s film version at United Artists despite lobbying by Mostel, Rod Steiger, Danny Kaye and Frank Sinatra to play the part. He was hired “probably because I was cheaper,” he told The Jerusalem Post in 2013. In its review, THR noted that Topol imbued his performance “with all the compassion, intensity and rough humor it requires. His speaking voice is magnificent, and if his singing voice is imperfect, this only seems appropriate to the characterization.” Fiddler on the Roof was nominated for best picture and Topol for best actor, but The French Connection and its star Gene Hackman prevailed on Oscar night. Topol, however, did receive a Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical. His big-screen résumé also included Before Winter Comes (1968) and a turn opposite Mia Farrow in The Public Eye (1972), directed by Carol Reed. Topol last portrayed Tevye on a Boston stage in 2009 but was forced to exit the musical after suffering a shoulder injury. A year later, he founded the Jordan River Village, where children with serious illnesses come to have fun. (His inspiration was Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall camps.) He was also a member of the board of directors of Variety Israel, a nonprofit organization that assists kids with special needs, regardless of religion, race and gender. He received the prestigious Israel Prize for lifetime achievement from his government in 2015. Survivors include his wife, Galia, whom he married in October 1956. They had three children, Omer, Adi and Anat. This article originally appeared in THR.com.

  6. Michael Bay made a legal move. Michael Bay found himself at the center of a highly publicized story this past week. It was reported that the veteran film director had been charged with killing a pigeon, an act that allegedly took place in Italy while he was filming 6 Underground (which can be streamed using a Netflix subscription). At the time the news was reported, Bay released a statement in which he denied the allegations, and he now has more to say. Not only is the filmmaker doubling down on his assertion that the story is false, but he’s also gotten a lawyer involved. The Transformers filmmaker has reportedly made a request of TheWrap, which broke the news of the situation involving the pigeon. Mathew Rosengart, the director’s attorney sent a letter – which was obtained by Variety – to the news outlet. In the message, the lawyer denied the trade’s notion that “Michael Bay had been accused or ‘charged’ with ‘killing a pigeon’ in connection with a film he directed." Rosengart also referred to the headline and story as “false, reckless, and defamatory.” With this, he’s asking that the publication retract or correct the story. The note also reads: " As you know, Mr. Bay was never accused, much less ‘charged,’ with ‘killing’ an animal. Indeed, prior to publication, you were placed on notice of the existence of video evidence rebutting these allegations and demonstrating that at no time was any animal harmed, let alone ‘killed.’ Further, as you also know (but failed to publish), the only ‘charge’ at issue in Italy concerns whether, in his capacity as the film’s director, Mr. Bay failed to properly supervise crew members (whom he did not even have the ability to hire) responsible for handling the animals on set. That charge is being vigorously defended — and indeed, Mr. Bay feels so strongly that, to his credit, he refused to settle the case even for the nominal fine that was proposed by authorities to resolve it. " In the original report, someone close to the blockbuster production alleged that the incident involved a homing pigeon being killed by a dolly under the Ambulance director’s watch. Pigeons are considered a protected species in Italy and, under the country’s law, they cannot be killed, harmed or captured. Michael Bay said via his initial statement that “no animal involved in the production was injured or harmed” on the set of the movie or any project he’s made over the past several decades. Bay, who admitted that he couldn’t get into specifics at the time due to this being an ongoing case, also stated that he was given the opportunity to settle by paying a fine but opted not to do so because he “would not plead guilty to having harmed an animal.” As noted in Matthew Rosengart's statement on his behalf, the Bad Boys director considers himself a "well-known animal lover and major animal activist." 6 Underground, which began principal photography in July 2018, was a massive undertaking, as the film was shot in Italy, Budapest, Los Angeles and the United Arab Emirates. The gritty story focuses on a group of individuals who become vigilantes after faking their deaths, and it stars Ryan Reynolds, Dave Franco, Adria Arjona and Corey Hawkins. When it was released the following year, the movie was streamed by a lot of Netflix subscribers. The action film seemed to be setting up a franchise, and even the stars had ideas about potential cast additions. Updates on a second installment have been scarce, and it’s unclear as to whether this latest development will have any bearing on such a project. As of this writing, TheWrap has yet to formally respond to Matthew Rosengart’s letter on behalf of Michael Bay. It’s currently unclear as to how this situation might progress and how Bay’s legal situation will pan out.
  7. The actor just turned 27! Anyone else miss Arrakis? Well, thankfully Dune: Part 2 is among 2023’s movie releases. There’s a lot to be excited about regarding the sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s science fiction stunner including the return of Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atriedes and much more screen time for Zendaya’s Chani. The co-stars are besties in real life and in honor of Chalamet’s birthday Zendaya even took to social media to celebrate the occasion. The Euphoria actress has been rather absent on social media most of the year, except for when it comes to showing off her many incredible looks that earned her a place among the most fashionable celebrities of 2022. But of course Zendaya had to celebrate her Dune co-star as he turned 27 this week with this post on her Instagram story: Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet together, Zendaya instagram story for his birthday Zendaya wrote “Happy birthday to this kid” on top of a photo of her and Timothée Chalamet behind the scenes of a cover story they did last year for Dune. As Zendaya is pictured putting on jewelry, Chalamet is making a wacky face in the background. We can’t wait to see these two back in action for Dune: Part 2! As for the birthday boy, the actor took to Instagram on his big day to simply post a photo of him as a kid with the proclamation he’s now 27. The actor has accomplished a lot since getting his start in Hollywood when he was 14. Notably, the actor has worked with a ton of incredible filmmakers, between an early role on Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, Luca Guadagnino on the Oscar-winning movie Call Me By Your Name along with Bones And All, Greta Gerwig on Lady Bird and Little Women along with Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch. https://www.instagram.com/tchalamet/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=096122fd-2c1a-41d6-b7f5-6f7d85445a5a Dune: Part 2 started filming over the summer of 2022 and wrapped this month. The production took to Italy, Hungary and the United Arab Emirates. Along the way, Chalamet shared the journey, showing he was sightseeing in an iconic Indiana Jones location while Zendaya teased fans of the shoot with an Arrakis sunset last month. The sequel will reunite Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya with a number of co-stars from the 2021 movie including Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista along with the Dune: Part 2 cast list along with an impressive new lineup of talent that includes Elvis’ Austin Butler as the villain Feyd-Rautha, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Christopher Walken is playing Emperor Shaddam IV and Léa Seydoux will play Margot of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood . Dune: Part 2 will continue where the previous movie left off and continue to adapt Frank Herbert’s beloved novel with Denis Villeneuve’s visionary filmmaking. The movie is set to be released in theaters on November 3.
