Is there a reserve day for IPL 2023 final?

The start of the IPL 2023 final on Sunday between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans has been delayed due to a heavy downpour in Ahmedabad. The second qualifier of the season on Friday also was interrupted due to rain, but the crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium witnessed a full game where Hardik Pandya's men scripted a thrilling 62-run win against five-time champions Mumbai Indians to reach their second successive final. Chennai, on the other hand, had made the final after beating GT in the first qualifier on Tuesday. It is their 10th appearance in an IPL final where they have won four times. And although the packed stadium in Ahmedabad will be hoping for a full game on Sunday, rain gods could have other plans. Hence the question arises - what happens if the CSK versus GT final is washed out. (CSK vs GT Live Score, IPL 2023 Final)

Based on the playing conditions mentioned in the previous IPL season, the cut-off time for a full match is 9:35 PM IST. For a five-over match, the clock can go all the way till 11:56 PM IST.

If the match still doesn't begin, then there will be a reserve day, which will also remain valid if the match cannot be completed on Sunday.

"Let me end the confusion. There is a reserve day tomorrow. Unlike last year, a reserve day is not guaranteed only when a match starts and a the result isn’t determined on the day. This year, if the final cannot be completed or doesn’t take place at all on Sunday (May 28), we will have the contest on Monday," sources close to Hindustan Times confirmed.

The rule applies for the Reserve Day well where the Super Over also comes into equation. For a Super Over, the outfield and the pitch must be ready at the latest by 1.20 AM IST. If the Reserve Day is washed out as well then the team that finished higher on the points table after 70 league matches will go home with the trophy. In this case, Gujarat Titans, who had ended as table toppers in the league phase, will emerge as champions over second-placed CSK.

Nora Fatehi and Varun Dhawan during their IIFA performance in Abu Dhabi.

Varun Dhawan was one of the performers at the IIFA Awards held in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. The actor danced to a mashup of Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham song Shava Shava and his song Garmi from the film Street Dancer 3D. During his dance act, he was also joined by his Street Dancer 3D co-star Nora Fatehi and the two went on to do a different version of her hook step from the song. Those on Reddit however had mixed reactions to the peculiar performance. Also read: Hrithik Roshan, Vicky Kaushal dance to Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai song Ek Pal Ka Jeena at IIFA 2023. Watch

Nora Fatehi and Varun Dhawan during their IIFA performance in Abu Dhabi.
A video of Varun's IIFA performance was shared on Reddit on Sunday. It shows him touching the hands of some background dancers and moving back in shock as if he felt the current in their hands. He goes on to dance to ‘Say Garmi Garmi’ made on the tunes of Shava Shava. He also gives his own twist to Amitabh Bachchan's popular Shava Shava step. Soon after, Nora Fatehi arrives on stage to the tune of Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and wipes Varun's forehead amid too much ‘garmi (heat)’. He lifts her in her arms and says the line “Arrey yar koi AC chala do yar (someone go and switch on the AC)” from the Garmi song. The two go on to dance to ‘Say Garmi Garmi’ yet again but this time Nora moves backwards while doing her hook step on the floor as Varun comes towards her.

Some found it funny
Some found the act amusing, with one writing, “I’m really thankful to them for giving us this.” “This is hilarious,” wrote another. A person also said, “They are trying to get audience back to watching their performances … so they’re trying to push it I guess.”

Many called it cringeworthy
But many found it cringeworthy and showed total disappointment to the same on Reddit. A person asked, “Both of them are great dancers….and they went with this?” Another asked, “Who the hell thought this was a good idea? Who approved it? How did it pass all those stages of quality control and manage to reach the stage and now, our eyes? I need to speak to the manager. A manager. Anyone!!!” One of some similar comments also read: “When did Bollywood become so cringe, genuinely asking?”

Varun's upcoming projects
Street Dancer 3D released in 2020 and also starred Shraddha Kapoor. Varun was last seen in the film, Bhediya, alongside Kriti Sanon. He will next be seen in Bawaal, co-starring Janhvi Kapoor. He is currently shooting for the Indian version of the web series, Citadel.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh

At least 40 armed terrorists suspected to be from Kuki militant groups have been killed in violent-hit Manipur in a massive crackdown by state police and security forces in the past 3-4 days, chief minister N Biren Singh said in Imphal on Sunday.
According to state government officials, operations against the armed militants are still ongoing, and the casualty figures could increase.

Fresh violence broke out with reports of firing and arson. Four civilians and one para-military personnel have been killed in fresh violence at several places since Saturday night, officials stated.

“State police have been conducting operations in vulnerable areas. In retaliatory and defensive operations against these terrorist groups who are using sophisticated arms against the civilian population, around 40 terrorists have been killed in different areas and a few arrested by the security forces,” Singh said.

The CM stated that the fresh violence is not between two communities but between armed terrorists trying to disintegrate Manipur.

He said the crackdown was against Kuki militant groups who had signed a suspension of operations (SoO) agreement with the Centre and the state government in August 2008.

The agreement was signed with 25 Kuki militant groups– (17 of them are under the umbrella group Kuki National Organisation and eight under the United Peoples’ Front). As per the agreement, the cadres of these groups were to be confined to designated camps and their arms were kept locked.

There have been allegations by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government that militants belonging to the SoO groups could be involved in spreading violence in Manipur. On the other hand, Kuki groups have blamed two radical groups, Arambai Tenggol and Meitei Leepun of the Meitei community for the attacks.

Ethnic clashes, which began on May 3 between Kuki and Meitei communities were triggered after the former opposed granting of scheduled tribe (ST) status to the former Manipur’s dominant community comprising 53% of the population. The violent clashes have so far left 74 dead, nearly 300 injured and displaced more than 30,000. Curfew has been clamped in most parts of the northeastern state, with partial relaxations, and all internet services shut down for the past 25 days.

Kuki groups have denounced CM Singh’s claims that militants from their community were involved in fresh clashes and alleged that the crackdown was another attempt to target their community. HT is yet to get reactions from Kuki outfits on the CM’s latest statements.

The crackdown and operations against armed militants have taken place ahead of union home minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state on May 29. During his three-day trip, Shah is slated to hold parleys with different stakeholders and find a way to end the present spate of ethnic violence in the northeastern state.

On Sunday, CM Singh appealed to the civilians of all communities against coming out on the roads so that there’s no disruption in the movement of commandos and security forces. Singh also said that he has given a free hand to the state police to act against anyone indulging in violence.

“The spurt in violent attacks on civilian houses in peripheral areas of Imphal Valley in the past one or two days which seemed well-planned is strongly condemnable. Those trying to break the state and disrupt peaceful coexistence are enemies of all the 34 communities residing together in Manipur,” said Singh.

“This is a challenge to the state and its integrity. The government will not allow disintegration of Manipur, protect the state’s integrity and uproot these armed terrorists from the State,” added Singh.

A senior Manipur government official told HT over the phone that fresh clashes have taken place at several places surrounding Imphal Valley between armed militants and security forces on Sunday. The militants are stated to be heavily armed with automatic assault rifles and machine guns.

“The clashes took place after the army and para-military forces started operations to take back arms and restore normalcy. Some militants targeted Sekmai, which is on the outskirts of Imphal, forcing residents to flee,” said the official on condition of anonymity.

Officials informed that fresh clashes broke out in the early hours of the morning at several places in different districts surrounding the Imphal Valley in which the house of BJP MLA Khwairakpam Raghumani Singh at Uripok in Imphal West was vandalised and his two vehicles set ablaze.

The clashes are reported to have taken place in Kakching, Churachandpur, Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur and Kangpokpi, they said.

Due to the fresh violence, curfew hours in both Imphal West and Imphal East districts, which were earlier relaxed from 5am to 4pm, were shortened to 11.30am. In Bishnupur, relaxation in curfew from 5am to 2pm was shortened to 12pm on Sunday.

Around 135 columns of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, comprising over 10,000 personnel, have been deployed in the violence-hit northeastern state to maintain law and order situation.

World Blood Cancer Day is celebrated every year on May 28 to show support for people with blood cancer and raise awareness around its symptoms and treatment.

Blood cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the bone marrow, where blood is produced. It affects the way your blood cells function. There are three main types of blood cancer namely leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and in most blood cancers, the normal blood cell development process is interrupted by uncontrolled growth of an abnormal type of blood cell. Symptoms of blood cancer include fever, chills, fatigue, weakness, weight loss, anaemia, joint pain among others. Early detection can help in effective treatment. Chemotherapy, radiation, stem cell transplant, surgery, immunotherapy are some of the treatment techniques. World Blood Cancer Day is celebrated every year on May 28 to show support for people with blood cancer and raise awareness around its symptoms and treatment. "Blood cancer is a cancer of the blood-forming tissues, hindering the body's ability to fight infection. It is an exceptionally grave and potentially life-threatening illness that disrupts the normal production and functioning of blood cells within the body. The scale of this issue is staggering, as evidenced by the latest GLOBOCAN data, which estimates 1.3 million new cases of blood cancer were reported worldwide in 2020 alone," says Dr Niti Krishna Raizada, Senior Director Medical – Oncology and Haemato-Oncology, Fortis Hospitals, Bangalore in an interview with HT Digital.

In order to combat this formidable adversary, it is imperative to be vigilant in identifying the early warning signs that can potentially save lives through timely diagnosis and prompt intervention.

Dr Raizada shares 7 crucial warning signs of blood cancer that one must notice:

BLOOD CANCER WARNING SIGNS
1. Unexplained weight loss
Significant and unintentional weight loss, occurring without any changes in diet or exercise, can be an alarming indication of blood cancer. It is crucial to seek medical attention if you experience substantial and unexplained weight loss.

2. Bone and joint discomfort
Persistent and unexplained pain in the bones or joints, especially in the back or hips, should not be ignored. It is important to consult a healthcare professional if you experience ongoing discomfort in these areas.

3. Persistent fatigue
Feeling excessively tired, weak, or exhausted on a regular basis, even after getting adequate rest, could be a sign of blood cancer. It is essential to take persistent fatigue seriously, as it is one of the most common early warning signs.

4. Easy bruising and excessive bleeding
Noticing bruises that appear without a clear cause or experiencing prolonged bleeding from minor cuts can indicate disrupted clotting, potentially linked to blood cancer. If you encounter unexplained bruises or persistent bleeding, seeking evaluation is crucial.

5. Shortness of breath
Difficulty breathing or experiencing breathlessness during normal activities may be a symptom of blood cancer. If you frequently struggle to catch your breath or encounter chest discomfort, it is important to seek prompt medical attention.

6. Frequent infections
Blood cancer weakens the immune system, making you more susceptible to infections. If you find yourself frequently dealing with infections such as respiratory or urinary tract infections, it could be an indication of an underlying blood cancer.

7. Enlarged lymph nodes
Swollen lymph nodes, particularly in the neck, armpits, or groin, can be a potential sign of blood cancer. If you have persistent swelling or tenderness in these areas, consulting a healthcare professional is important.

"By being aware of these warning signs, people can take proactive steps to seek medical attention and potentially save lives. Remember, timely diagnosis and effective treatment can make a profound difference in combating blood cancer and improving outcomes," concludes Dr Raizada.

Police personnel drag wrestler Sangeeta Phogat to detain her during the protest march from Jantar Mantar to New Parliament House.(ANI)

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Sunday issued notice to Delhi Police seeking the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in connection with the sexual harassment case and the immediate release of wrestlers who were detained from the protest site earlier today. The police dragged away and detained the protesting wrestlers as they tried to march to the new Parliament House demanding the arrest of Singh, a BJP MP, over allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation.

The Delhi Police has filed two FIRs against Singh, one of which relates to allegations by the minor wrestler and has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, while the other is related to outraging modesty of adult women wrestlers.

In a letter to Commissioner of Police Sanjay Arora, DCW chief Swati Maliwal said she was deeply pained by the manhandling and detention of female wrestlers and their families protesting at Jantar Mantar.

‘Coronation over, arrogant king…’: Rahul Gandhi jabs Modi on wrestlers' protest

She noted that the Delhi Police has “failed to arrest” the lawmaker despite a minor girl alleging sexual harassment.

“In Delhi, every day around 6 cases of sexual assault are reported and in each case, Delhi Police attempts to arrest the accused person. Then why has Brij Bhushan Singh not been arrested till date? If this is not blatant injustice, what is?” Maliwal asked rhetorically.

“This apparent partisan attitude of Delhi Police which is being seen as siding with the accused parliamentarian has made a mockery of justice and forced the women wrestlers to sit and sleep on the streets of Delhi,” she said.

Referring to the viral videos and images of police action against the aggrieved grapplers, Maliwal said the “manner in which these women champions are being dragged on the streets by Delhi Police is extremely unbecoming of the force.”

Reminding Arora of the laurels these female wrestlers have earned for the nation on multiple national and international fora. including the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics, the DCW chief wrote, “By denying them justice and forcefully detaining them for raising their voice against sexual harassment, Delhi Police is demoralising the women and girls of this country against reporting cases of sexual harassment and fighting for justice.”

Simona Halep

Former world No. 1 and two-time grand slam winner Simona Halep has accused the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) of double standards while dealing with the charge of irregularities it has levelled on her in connection with her Athlete Biological Passport (ABP).

The 31-year-old Romanian, winner of the French Open and Wimbledon singles titles, Simona Halep

The latest ITIA charge announced on Friday last is "separate and in addition to" the provisional suspension Halep received last year after failing a drug test during the US Open, the ITIA said.

Halep alleged on Monday that while the ITIA was stating on one hand that it wanted to engage her in a timely manner, on the other, it was asking the tribunal to delay the hearing.

"While the ITIA via their representative Nicole Sapstead was publicly stating 3 days ago that the ITIA has remained committed to engaging Mrs Halep in an empathetic, efficient and timely manner, they were at the same time officially requesting the Tribunal to delay my hearing... for the third time," said Halep in a statement posted on social media late on Monday.

"The ITIA publicly states one thing while privately doing another, I have repeatedly asked for my hearing and the ITIA has repeatedly sought to delay it."

The winner of 24 career titles added that she has a right to a quick hearing, and delaying it was against the norms.

"When is it going to stop? I ask the question once again. I am entitled to a quick hearing. Acting this way is contrary to my rights," added Halep, who defeated Serena Williams in straight sets in the 2019 Wimbledon final.

The ITIA had said the fresh charge was pressed "based on an assessment" of the tennis player's biological passport profile by team of experts. The ABP provides a baseline reading of substances in a player's body and is considered a way to help chart doping.

Sapstead, ITIA's senior director for anti-doping, had said in a statement on Friday last that, "We understand that today's (Friday) announcement adds complexity to an already high-profile situation. From the outset of this process -- and indeed any other at the ITIA -- we have remained committed to engaging with Ms. Halep in an empathetic, efficient, and timely manner."

Halep had taken to social media following the accusation of a second doping offense, saying she has "lived the worst nightmare I have ever gone through in my life" since being initially charged by the ITIA.

Halep had added that her "name (had) been soiled in the worst possible way" and that the ITIA is determined "to prove my guilt while I haven't EVER even thought of taking any illicit substance".

Halep had added that three world renowned experts had studied her blood tests and had been extremely clear that "my blood is totally normal". She stated that she was a "victim of contamination".

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi(File Photo)

Saudi Arabia’s tab for using icons of western popular culture to enhance its stature and sway on the global stage could soon rise by another nine figures.

The kingdom is reportedly willing to pay Argentinian maestro Lionel Messi $400 million-a-year for the twilight of his career. While a huge sum, even by football’s bloated standards, it’s just the latest in a string of moves by the petrostate’s rulers, who are plowing billions into sports, art and music.

Saudi Arabia hopes the spending, powered by excess revenue from its role as the world’s biggest crude exporter, will excite its burgeoning younger generation and supercharge its tourism industry. Critics say the efforts are aimed at varnishing an international image battered by a brutal war in Yemen and murder of Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

Overseeing this so-called soft power play is Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who’s simultaneously spending billions to build Saudi Arabia’s military capabilities, with what is now the world’s fifth-largest arms budget, and pursuing a more opportunistic diplomatic track that’s repeatedly put Riyadh at odds with Washington.

“It’s a complete reorientation of the kingdom,” says Kristin Smith Diwan, senior resident scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington. “They want to convince people this is a welcoming place, not a threatening one.”

Sporting Bets
The magnitude of its spending has made Saudi Arabia impossible to ignore for the world’s political and business elite. The kingdom’s economy was one of the fastest growing in the Group of 20 last year, boosted by the highest oil prices in about a decade, and it now boasts the world’s seventh-largest sovereign wealth fund, deploying billions both at home and abroad.

Sports assets have been high on the shopping list.
In late 2022, Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo signed a contract with Al-Nassr FC worth a reported $200 million a year. Little more than a year prior, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund led a consortium that acquired English Premier League football club Newcastle United FC for more than £300 million ($373 million). Saudi Arabia is considering a joint bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, having witnessed the recent success of the tournament in neighboring Qatar.

The PIF has also reportedly earmarked billions of dollars to finance its LIV Golf tour, which has attracted stars including Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, and last year considered a $20 billion attempt to add Formula 1 motor racing to its growing portfolio of sports investments. Elsewhere, venues in and around Jeddah and Riyadh have hosted mega-money boxing bouts featuring everyone from heavyweight champions Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk to up-and-coming fighters Jake Paul and Tommy Fury.

“Sport is essential to what Saudi is doing as it moves toward a world where it is less dependent on oil revenues,” according to Simon Chadwick, professor of sport and geopolitical economy at Skema Business School in Paris.

Saudi Arabia wants tourism to account for 10% of its gross domestic product in 2030, by which time it hopes to be attracting 100 million visitors a year. In 2022, the kingdom hosted about 16 million visitors, including tourists, business travelers, those coming to see relatives residing in the country and overseas Muslims on the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, a Saudi Tourism Authority representative said at a press briefing in Dubai this month.

To reach its target, Saudi Arabia has been looking beyond just professional sports. From an Andy Warhol exhibition, art biennale and electronic music concerts in the desert, to celebrity chef restaurants in Riyadh and partnerships with top culinary schools, it’s spending heavily to create an entertainment and leisure industry from scratch.

High-end hotels Aman Resorts and Banyan Tree have already been drawn to Al-Ula, an ancient oasis city in Saudi Arabia’s northwest that’s being transformed into a luxury travel destination on a budget of $35 billion. US pop stars Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey and John Legend have all recently performed there.

Phillip Jones, chief tourism officer of the country’s Royal Commission for Al-Ula, said that, while some artists still refuse to visit the kingdom, the smart money is in Saudi Arabia looking for opportunities to invest. “They recognize that this country is about to explode in terms of financial capacity growth,” he said.

And it’s not just the private sector. In recent years, the UK and France have signed cultural cooperation agreements with Saudi Arabia.

‘False Impression’

The sudden influx of sporting and cultural events is popular in the country, which until only recently enforced rules forbidding men and women from mixing together in public. This drastic change puts Saudi Arabia’s strategy on “a much grander scale” than Gulf neighbors, such as the United Arab Emirates, which have also opened up to western culture, according to Lina Khatib, director of the SOAS Middle East Institute.

But not everyone is buying the hype. Campaigners say Saudi Arabia is deflecting attention from a poor domestic record on free speech and other human rights.

“I’m glad these changes are happening, but it gives a false impression of our country,” Lina Al-Hathloul, Brussels-based head of monitoring and advocacy at human rights group ALQST, said of MBS’s soft power blueprint. She said once this strategy of using culture, sports and the arts to rehabilitate the Crown Prince’s reputation and woo western investors and visitors yields dividends, “violations we point out will no longer be effective.”

Lina Al-Hathloul’s sister, Loujain Al-Hathloul, a prominent women’s rights activist in Saudi Arabia, was arrested in 2018 and later jailed on charges of inciting regime change and seeking to serve foreign agendas. She was released in 2021 but subject to a travel ban.

Al-Ula’s metamorphosis is just one project feeding into MBS’s ambitious Vision 2030 plan to overhaul Saudi Arabia’s economy — something not universally welcomed within its borders. Members of the Howeitat tribe have been arrested for resisting forced evictions linked to the giant Neom megacity project and risk the death penalty, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said in a statement on May 3.

A representative for Neom declined to comment. The Saudi government’s Center for International Communications didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Earlier this month, Fahd Hamidaddin, CEO of the Saudi Tourism Authority, led a large contingent taking part in the annual Arabian Travel Market exhibition in Dubai. He said it was only the third time Saudi Arabia had participated in the trade show that launched 30 years ago.

Addressing reporters at a luxury hotel during the event, Hamidaddin sat in front of a large screen flicking images of a smiling Messi in his capacity as a Saudi tourism ambassador. The footballer and his family were shown weaving baskets, petting Arabian thoroughbreds and playing in amusement parks during a visit to the kingdom.

“To those that are skeptics, if you want to put effort in talking and saying things about Saudi, I would encourage you to see it before you make that effort,” Hamidaddin said at the event.

Real Madrid's Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti (L) talks to Real Madrid's Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior (AFP)

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said on Tuesday he expected Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr to remain at the Spanish club despite facing racist abuse in several LaLiga matches.

"I don't think (he will leave Spain), because he loves football and he loves Real Madrid. His love for the club is very big and he wants to make his career here," Ancelotti told a news conference.

He said Vinicius was "very sad" yet overwhelmed by the "unconditional support" he was receiving "even from rivals."

"He is the victim of what's going on. Sometimes I see people putting the blame on him, saying that he provokes, about his attitude... no!" he said, adding that the fact that the insults had started as soon as the club bus arrived at the stadium invalidated arguments that Vinicius had provoked the fans.

Seven people were detained by Spanish police earlier on Tuesday, accused of different hate crimes against Vinicius Jr, including racist slurs allegedly hurled at the Brazilian during Sunday's match at Valencia's Mestalla stadium.

The arrests come a day after football federation chief Luis Rubiales said Spanish soccer has a racism problem, the 10th complaint filed by Real Madrid for racist abuse against Vinicius in Spain this season.

Ancelotti urged authorities to take more effective actions against racism and hate speech in soccer and said the protocols in place to deal with the issue were obsolete.

"I want actions! And nothing has been done yet. There are countries where they don't insult you, like England, for example, where they solved it a long time ago: when they expelled England from European competition for five years."

He said he was contemplating taking his team off the pitch next time Vinicius or any of his players become victims of racist abuse.

UGC chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar said that the portal will provide a common platform for listing of vacancies in all central universities (CUs), and it will shift the recruitment process completely online.

“The portal will provide a single platform for candidates seeking jobs in central universities. They will register themselves on the portal and create a personalized dashboard for themselves. They will be able to track their applications in real-time, also can keep updating their application and transfer that to any CU which has advertised faculty positions. Registered applicants will also get an auto email informing about the new vacancies advertised by any CU,” Kumar said.

For universities, the platform provides real-time tracking of applications, customized admin dashboards, and configurable advertisement rules.

“The portal will also provide real-time analysis and insights into the application process. The screening committee of the concerned university can view details of the applicants and check the uploaded document against each entry. Points and comments of the screening committee can also be recorded in the portal itself,” he said.

“Using backend data analytics on the CU-Chayan portal, the UGC will gather data on how many positions are filled, how many vacancies are there, whether reservations are being followed as per rules, among others. This will help UGC to hand hold CUs to fast track the recruitment process,” the UGC chairperson said.

Currently, all the 46 central universities conduct recruitment processes through their individual portals and advertise the vacancies on their official websites and newspapers.

With the introduction of the CU-Chayan, the central universities will continue with the current practice of putting up advertisements in newspapers; they will have to deactivate their recruitment portal, Kumar said.

“In case of current recruitments for which advertisements have already been issued, the universities can go ahead without using this portal. However, all future recruitments will take place on this portal, and applicants have to apply only on the CU-Chayan portal,” the UGC chairperson said.

A section of faculty members raised concerns over the possible centralization of the recruitment process in CUs.

Abha Dev Habib, an associate professor at Delhi University’s Miranda House College, said that the portal should only be limited to providing information about jobs to the applicants and facilitating them in applying for it.

“There should not be an attempt to centralize the process of application examination. No attempt should be made to constitute centralized section committees. Otherwise, it will completely violate the autonomy of central universities,” she said.

In reply, Kumar said that CUs will continue to advertise the positions, collect online applications, shortlist the applicants, conduct the interviews and appoint the faculty members as they were doing earlier.

“The UGC will be maintaining this portal for the benefit of all the CUs and is not a centralized recruitment process for all CUs. All CUs will continue to have their autonomy in the recruitment process and all the recruitment will be done by the respective CUs,” he said.

Kumar said that the CU-Chayan portal has been developed in consultation with the vice chancellors of all central universities.

“Their feedback and inputs have been incorporated. Changes can be incorporated in the portal to customize to take care of the specific needs of any CU. UGC will also provide training to CUs in using this portal,” he said.

The UGC chairperson also clarified that the portal will not have any impact on the reservation system in faculty recruitment.

“Each university will continue to follow the government of India reservation system and prepare their respective rosters as per DOPT rules,” he said.

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has once again made headlines as she recently signed a deal with talent agency WME. The agency will be working on expanding Meghan's business ventures across various platforms, including film and television production, brand partnerships, and overall business development. WME will also represent the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's Archewell, and Meghan will serve as the couple's public face when it comes to their entertainment industry pursuits.

Mark Boardman, a well-known entertainment expert and founder of MarkMeets, expressed surprise as to why Prince Harry has not signed with WME as well. While it is possible that he has already signed but hasn't announced it yet, he may have opted to pursue different career paths or may not want to be represented by the same agency as Meghan. However, Boardman did mention that Harry and Meghan previously stated that they plan to work together on various projects, so it's likely that they will continue to collaborate in some capacity.

Meghan's move suggests that she is once again interested in exploring new opportunities and expanding her visibility. Joining a top talent agency like WME could help her secure high-profile projects and rebuild her brand in the entertainment industry. It's important to note that before her marriage, Meghan had a successful career as an actress, and signing with a talent agency is a logical step for someone who wishes to continue or enhance their career in the entertainment industry.

While Meghan is making strides in her entertainment career, her husband Prince Harry is preparing to travel to England for the upcoming coronation of his father, King Charles III. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 6, but Meghan will be staying behind in California. Does this indicate a rift in the couple's relationship? Only time will tell.

For now, fans can eagerly anticipate Meghan's upcoming projects with WME. Will she create a documentary? Host a talk show? Launch her own line of products? Whatever she decides, we can be certain that it will be thrilling, and we cannot wait to witness what the future holds for the Duchess of Sussex.

James McCabe with Novak Djokovic

In 2013, in front of a packed Rod Laver Arena, an elated 10-year-old James McCabe was taken to the centre of the court for the coin toss before the semi-final tie between Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer. Nine years later, on a sunny Melbourne afternoon, a rather disappointed McCabe, having lost his first-round qualifiers match at the Australian Open, received an unexpected phone call. What followed was 'the quickest shower of his life' and when he reached the same iconic Rod Laver Arena, on the opposite end stood Djokovic. McCabe was called as a sparring partner for the 22-time Grand Slam winner, on two consecutive days (the other on Margaret Court Arena), which he still hails as the 'highlight of my tennis career'.

McCabe, who was ranked 1211 in singles back then, has come a long way. Last week, battling through the qualifiers in the Bengaluru Open, the young Aussie made his maiden semi-final appearance at a Challenger event before losing to compatriot and eventual runner-up James Duckworth, and now stands on the brink of breaking into the top-300.

In an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times Digital, McCabe talked about his run in the two Challenger events in India, the unforgettable experience of practicing with Djokovic and the deal he made with him. His father, Patrick, meanwhile talked about his son's interest in tennis and music while also revealing how he coached McCabe junior by simply watching YouTube videos. Here are excerpts...

Is this your first visit to India? What was the experience like? Rising through the qualifiers you made the last 16 in the Chennai Open and then to the semis in Bengaluru...

James: Yes, it was my first time in India and it's absolutely marvellous. Chennai was great, but Bengaluru was even better. Every day is sunny, every day is perfect temperature for tennis. Everything is absolutely perfect here, can't get better than this.

James McCabe

This was your best show in the Challenger circuit. Previously you reached a couple of finals in the Futures circuit. Thoughts on that?

James: Yes, it is my first semis and it has been run to remember. I was just unfortunate to not have won that match. Looking back at it, this was my best week on tour so far. I just have to keep going and going in the Challenger circuit now and give it my best to improve my ranking because I want to reach the top-100.

There were a couple of Australians on this Challenger tour, a total three reached (others being James Duckworth and eventual champion, Max Purcell) the semis in Bengaluru. What has been your equation with these senior players or ones back at home like Nick Kyrgios, who is the biggest name in present Aussie tennis now?

James: We are typically all from Sydney - Kyrgios, Duckworth, Purcell...all. We know how each other plays, we practice a lot together. Yes he (Duckworth) got the better of me today but overall it has been a great experience.

There is a step by step process through which tennis players tend to make progress in the early stages of their career. ITF and Challengers...what is the difference like in terms of the challenge it possesses and the level of tennis?

James: Humongous difference. It changes everything. One is the number balls that are changed. In Challenger, you get 7-9 balls while in ITF it is just 3. The play is a lot faster. Also the number of umpires...you basically got one for the whole tournament in Futures and a lot many in Challengers. In terms of level of tennis, in Challenger it is almost at the top level, just a miniscule of difference and you have to be more mentally strong.

There is little or no information yet on the internet about you. So if you could talk about how tennis happened to you?

James' father: James started playing tennis when he was two and a half years old in Sydney. We had sort of a complex with two hardcourt tennis courts. So I took him there and he hit some forehands, and then backhands and it surprised me, to be honest. I mean he was just a baby then. But after that I took him to the court every day for 3-4 hours. So yes, that is how he started.

When he was 10, he won state tennis juniors and won the nationals when he was 16. He later joined the National Tennis Academy in Australia.

James McCabe with his father Patrick(Special arrangement)

Any background of sports in the family?

Father: No. And James is only just a tennis player; he was also a national champion in swimming when he was in school. He is also musically talented. He plays the flute, piano and guitar.

If I'm not wrong, you were his first coach and you taught him tennis by watching YouTube videos?

Father: Yes, that's right and it started within a week after I saw him hit that forehand from the baseline when he was two and half years old. I was a labourer and my wife was a caregiver and we did not have enough money for coaching. So I went to YouTube and saw that there was no two and half or three year old who could hit the ball like that. So I was kind of excited. I knew that this boy was special. So I started searching and learning about serving and returning and patterns of play.

I did not want to get in trouble with all the tactics. It's not rocket science. You just have to hit the ball over the net and try to keep the ball in. Yes there are a couple of patterns of play, get deep with serve and get deep with returns.

If you could talk about that picture with Djokovic that went viral last year…

James: I lost the first round in qualifying at the Australian Open. Next day I slept in and was in my bed, basically sulking. Then I got a phone call at 12. Someone asked, ‘Do you want to hit with Djokovic at Rod Laver Arena in about 30 minutes?’ Next thing I know, I had the quickest shower in my life and then quickly reached. It was absolutely amazing. Next day he asked me to hit the Margaret Court Arena. And then the next day I hit with Kyrgios in John Cain Arena.

Did Djokovic remember you? Did you receive any advice from him?

James: Yes he did remember. I showed him the photo as well. He remembered that I didn't choose him. He laughed and giggled. But yes that training has been the highlight of my tennis career. He is an absolute role model.

He just told me to keep going. He said, 'you have a really big serve and there is no reason why you can't make it to the top.' Then we made a deal where he said, 'you tossed the coin in 2013 at Rod Laver Arena, you hit with me at Rod Laver Arena and so the next is playing at Rod Laver Arena in the Australian Open. Hope you can make it happen.'

I saw a post of you with the guitar - Presley's song. Your father mentioned your interest in music as well. Is music something you lean towards to calm yourself down before matches?

James: Yes absolutely. It keeps me in the moment. And yes I have my own playlist. I listen to Frank Sinatra, Beethoven, Chopin...mostly classical music.

Lastly, you plan for 2023?

James: I will just keep hitting the Challengers and go up in the ranking and if all goes well, I might jump from 300 to 200 and end the year as a top-100 player.

Manchester City's Phil Foden celebrates after scoring his side's opening goal during an English FA Cup fifth-round soccer match between Bristol City and Manchester City at Ashton Gate stadium in Bristol, England, Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023.

Phil Foden was in danger of becoming one of the forgotten players at Manchester City this season.

Maybe not anymore.

The England winger is over his injury problems and back in favor with City manager Pep Guardiola — and is repaying the faith with goals as the English champions head into the final stretch of the season on the hunt for more trophies.

Foden scored in each half in City's 3-0 win at second-tier Bristol City in the FA Cup on Tuesday, helping the team secure a place in the quarterfinals.

Kevin De Bruyne netted the other goal at Ashton Gate as City stayed on course in a competition it last won in 2019.

Foden lost his place as a regular starter at City just before the World Cup and after returning from the Qatar tournament has been overshadowed by fellow wingers Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez.

Now Guardiola has an embarrassment of riches in the wide positions with Foden over some foot injuries and shining again. He scored against Bournemouth on Saturday and was probably City's best player against Bristol City on a night star striker Erling Haaland was rested.

“This season he struggled a bit and was a bit down,” Guardiola said of Foden. "But now he’s back for the best bit of the season. His impact has been amazing. Football pays off when you work like he does.”

Foden converted a cross from Mahrez in the seventh minute to give City the lead and then provided the side-footed finish — via a deflection from a covering home defender — to make it 2-0 in the 74th.

“I feel 100% fit now and comfortable,” Foden said. “(It has) been one of the worst parts of my career but everyone goes through them and it is how you react.”

De Bruyne curled in City's best goal of the game in the 81st from outside the area.

City has reached at least the semifinals in five of the last six seasons.

LEICESTER STUNNED

There will be at least one non-Premier League team in the last eight of the FA Cup.

Blackburn, which plays in the second-tier Championship, provided the shock of the evening by winning 2-1 at Leicester, the 2021 champion.

Tyrhys Dolan capitalized on a sloppy pass out from the back by Daniel Amartey to open the scoring for Blackburn before Sammie Szmodics dribbled through the soft center of Leicester's defense before poking in a finish shortly after halftime.

Kelechi Iheanacho scored his customary FA Cup goal — it's now 18 in his last 24 appearances in the competition, more than any other player in that time — but Leicester couldn't grab an equalizer.

Leicester can now focus all its attention on staying in the Premier League. The team is only three points above the relegation zone.

FULHAM'S SENSATION

Manor Solomon scored for a fourth straight game to help Fulham beat Leeds 2-0 and continue its excellent season, in which the London club is also impressing in sixth place in the Premier League.

Solomon is an Israel winger who joined on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk in the offseason but missed almost the entire first half of the season because of injury.

Now that he is healthy, he has been starring off the bench — his previous three goals came as a substitute — but was handed a start against Leeds and scored again after playing a one-two with Aleksandar Mitrovic and curling into the far corner.

Joao Palhinha’s opening goal was even better, the Portugal midfielder intercepting a pass out from the back by Tyler Adams and bending in a shot off the post from 30 meters.

In the second half, there were five U.S. internationals on the field at Craven Cottage — Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson for Fulham and Weston McKennie, Brenden Aaronson and Adams for Leeds.

Fulham reached the last eight for the first time in 13 years.

BRIGHTON ADVANCES

Brighton advanced to the quarterfinals for the fifth time in its history and the first time since the 2018-19 season, when the team lost to Man City in the semifinals.

A 30th-minute goal from Evan Ferguson, who tapped in from Kaoru Mitoma's square ball, earned a 1-0 win at second-tier Stoke.

DRAW FOR QUARTERFINALS

The draw for the quarterfinals takes place Wednesday after the remaining last-16 matches are completed. Those games include Manchester United hosting West Ham and Tottenham visiting second-tier Sheffield United.

Spain's Rafael Nadal answers questions at a press conference

Rafa Nadal said on Tuesday he had decided to withdraw from two upcoming Masters 1000 hardcourt events in Indian Wells and Miami due to injury. The 22-times Grand Slam champion, who has not competed since his Australian Open title defence ended in a second-round loss during which he aggravated a hip problem, said he had started rehab and physiotherapy as instructed by doctors.

"I am sad that I won't be able to compete at Indian Wells nor Miami. Very sad not to be there," read a message posted on Nadal's Twitter account. "I'll miss all my US fans but I hope to see them later this year during the summer swing."

Nadal lost in straight sets to Taylor Fritz in last year's Indian Wells final and then skipped the Miami Open so that he could focus on his claycourt preparation.

The 36-year-old Spaniard is a three-times champion at Indian Wells having triumphed in 2007, 2009 and 2013. Nadal has reached the Miami final five times but has never won the title and has not competed there since 2017.

"We wish Rafa continued healing, and hope to see him back at the BNP Paribas Open next year," Indian Wells tournament director Tommy Haas said in a statement.

At the Australian Open, top seed Nadal tweaked his left hip while running for a backhand in the second set at Rod Laver Arena, and after inspection from a trainer when trailing 6-4 5-3, he went off-court for a medical time-out.

The 22-times Grand Slam champion returned grim-faced to play out the match but his movement was clearly affected, paving the way for American Mackenzie McDonald to end the Spaniard's bid for a third title at Melbourne Park.

Despite the controversy surrounding him, Hopkins was chosen in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. In his rookie season, he showed promise, earning over 800 yards and two touchdowns.

It's been nearly a decade since DeAndre Hopkins and Mark Harrison were accused of leaving their hotel room in disarray before the 2013 NFL Combine. Despite the allegations, the receiver has gone on to become one of the league's most successful players.

While Hopkins denied any involvement in the incident, details of the room's condition are well-known. Witnesses claim there were faeces and urine present, toothpaste on the mirror, and no attempt to clean up the mess. Harrison was cleared of blame, leaving the incident to be solely associated with Hopkins.

The Rise of DeAndre Hopkins: From Rookie to Superstar

Despite the controversy surrounding him, Hopkins was chosen in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. In his rookie season, he showed promise, earning over 800 yards and two touchdowns.

Hopkins continued to improve over the next few seasons, with his breakout year coming in 2015. That year, he earned over 1500 yards and 11 touchdowns, becoming one of the league's top receivers.

The Trade to Arizona: A Turning Point in Hopkins' Career

In 2019, Hopkins was traded to the Arizona Cardinals, a move that shocked many in the football world. The wide receiver's first season with the Cardinals was a success, earning over 1400 yards and six touchdowns.

Hopkins' availability has been a concern over the last two seasons, but he's proven to be a valuable asset to any team when he's on the field. Despite the rumours of him potentially being on the move again, Hopkins' talent is undeniable.

Overcoming Adversity: Hopkins' Continued Success

Hopkins has faced his fair share of obstacles throughout his career, from the hotel controversy to injuries that have kept him off the field. Despite these challenges, he's continued to excel, proving himself to be one of the NFL's top wide receivers.

What's Next for DeAndre Hopkins?

As the 2023 NFL season approaches, it remains to be seen what's next for Hopkins. Will he remain with the Cardinals or be traded to another team? Whatever happens, it's clear that Hopkins has cemented himself as one of the league's most talented players and will continue to be a force on the field.

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James

LeBron James, the LA Lakers' star player, has been ruled out indefinitely due to a sore right foot. He sustained the injury during their game against the Dallas Mavericks, where he helped his team stage a stunning comeback victory despite his ailment. The Lakers will sorely miss his presence as they look to secure a spot in the playoffs.

James had previously stated that the last 23 games of the regular season would be the most crucial of his career. Unfortunately, he has only played in two of them and now faces an extended period on the sidelines. The Lakers' hopes of securing a postseason berth are now in jeopardy without their superstar player.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Upgraded to Probable for Tonight's Game

The Milwaukee Bucks' two-time NBA MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo, is set to return to action tonight against the Brooklyn Nets. He had missed their previous game against the Phoenix Suns due to injury concerns. However, he has reportedly practised with the team and is ready to make a comeback.

Antetokounmpo has been plagued with injuries of late, including a wrist injury sustained before the All-Star break. The Bucks are unfazed and remain confident despite their star player's recent setbacks.

Draymond Green Set to Return for the Golden State Warriors

Draymond Green, the former NBA Defensive Player of the Year, has been out of action due to a right knee contusion since February 23. However, he has been upgraded to probable for tonight's game against the Portland Trail Blazers. His return will greatly benefit the Warriors, who are on a two-game winning streak behind Klay Thompson's stellar performances.

In Green's absence, Jonathan Kuminga has taken over his starting spot. However, having the veteran back on the court will be a significant boost to the Warriors' playoff aspirations.

De’Aaron Fox Questionable for the Kings due to Sore Left Wrist

The Sacramento Kings' newly-named All-Star, De'Aaron Fox, is questionable for tonight's game against the OKC Thunder due to a sore left wrist. Fox scored 33 points and provided eight assists in their previous game against the Thunder, but his shooting hand injury may keep him out of the lineup.

Given his importance to the team, the Kings may exercise caution with their star player and make a game-time decision on his availability.

Injury Update: NBA Stars on the Mend
As the NBA season nears its end, injuries are becoming a major concern for many teams. While some players are recovering from their injuries and making a comeback, others are facing extended periods on the sidelines.

Fans of the Lakers will be disappointed to hear that LeBron James is out indefinitely due to a sore right foot, while the Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo is set to return to action after missing their last game.

The Warriors will be happy to have Draymond Green back in the lineup, while the Kings may have to play without their star player, De'Aaron Fox, due to a sore left wrist. As the playoff race heats up, injuries could prove to be the difference between success and failure for many teams.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Eldhose Paul (left) and silver medalist Abdulla Aboobacker

Indian athletes will look to build on last year’s stellar performances as they begin a new season with the Indian Open Throws and Jumps Competition at the Inspire Institute of Sport here from Wednesday.

Expectations have surged with Indian athletes taking impressive strides in international meets last season. India won eight medals in athletics at the Commonwealth Games with four of them coming in jumps. This, besides Neeraj Chopra’s yet another fine year winning silver at the World Championships and a maiden Diamond League Trophy, and Avinash Sable’s historic CWG silver medal.

In jumps and throws especially, Indian athletes showed steady progress last season with three each qualifying in men’s long jump and triple jump at the world championships.

In the Birmingham CWG, triple jumpers Eldhose Paul and Abdulla Aboobacker made it a gold-silver finish while long jumper M Sreeshankar won silver.

Paul and Aboobacker, and the promising Praveen Chithravel, will compete in triple jump at the JSW High Performance Training Centre here. The trio pushed each other last year. IIS athlete Chithravel, who narrowly missed out on a medal at CWG, is coming off a good showing at the Asian Indoor Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan in February where he jumped 16.98m to take second place. It will be a good competition at the start of the season with all three in fray.

Paul and Aboobacker have been training under India’s foreign coach Denis Kapustin of Russia, triple jump bronze medallist at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

“There have been changes in their training regimen under Kapustin and this competition will show how well they have adapted to it,” said former international jumper Harikrishnan, also an India coach.

“Paul is competing after September. It will give him a good feel of his body and (give the feedback) how well he has trained for the big season. The plan will be to go big with his jumps in March-April and try and qualify for the world championships,” he said. “It will be interesting to see how the three push each other because after CWG they have gained confidence and want to improve their performance.”

Jeswin Aldrin will be on similar ground when he competes against Muhammed Anees Yahiya in men’s long jump. In the absence of Sreeshankar, the two will be raring to go against each other and make a statement. Anees finished 5th at CWG (7.97m).

Aldrin has been on a high. He has started the season by winning silver at the Asian Indoor Championships clearing 7.97m. At the National Games in October, he had a big 8.26m that saw him qualify for this year’s Budapest world championships.

A total of 16 events will be held over two days. Shot Putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Karanveer Singh, who won gold and silver at the Asian Indoor meet, will also grab the spotlight. Toor, the national record holder (21.49m), will look to impress and qualify for the world championships in August.

Cristiano Ronaldo didn't cast his vote at the FIFA Awards, with Lionel Messi hogging the limelight.

Lionel Messi hogged the limelight in the FIFA Awards ceremony in Paris, winning the Best Men's Player of The Year award to complete a historic 2022. He led Argentina to FIFA World Cup 2022 glory last year in Qatar, defeating France in the final. With Argentina cruising to an easy 2-0 win, Kylian Mbappe came to France's rescue and staged a comeback. The Frenchman levelled proceedings within 97 seconds, scoring a penalty in the 80th-minute and then making it 2-2 with a stunning volley in the 81st-minute.

In extra-time, Argentina took a 3-2 lead in the 108th-minute with Messi finding the back of the net. But Mbappe once again equalised in the 118th-minute to make it 3-3. In the penalty shootout, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez came out on top to deny Aurelien Tchouameni and Kingsley Coman as Argentina sealed a 4-2 victory. For his performances in the World Cup, Messi was adjudged as the best player, ending the tournament with seven goals and three assists in seven fixtures.

Meanwhile, Messi's arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo had a poor World Cup, and also saw his Manchester United contract get terminated due to a controversial interview. Since then, Ronaldo has joined Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr. The former Real Madrid start was expected to be a part of the voting process in the FIFA Awards, but he did not cast any vote in the Best Player poll. FIFA confirmed that Pepe took on those responsibilities. The defender voted for France and PSG striker Mbappe, followed by former Real Madrid teammates Luka Modric and Karim Benzema.

Since their World Cup exit, Portugal have a new boss in the guise of Roberto Martinez, who managed Belgium last year. Martinez voted for Messi, and then Kevin de Bruyne and Mbappe. Ronaldo also was not named on the list of nominees, failing to make the final shortlist. He won the first FIFA Best Men's Player of the Year awards in 2016 and 2017.

Lionel Messi during his FIFA Awards speech.

Lionel Messi once again cemented his position as one of the greatest of all time, winning the FIFA Player of the Year 2022 award, on Monday in Paris. The PSG star led Argentina to FIFA World Cup 2022 glory in Qatar last year, defeating France in the final. The Argentine maestro beat club teammate Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid's Karim Benzema for the trophy.

Messi was adjudged as the best player in the World Cup, finishing the tournament with seven goals and three assists in seven games. He was one of the only three Argentine players to play in every single minute of the campaign, 690 minutes in total after two matches went into extra-time. During the tournament, he registered 347 passes, five tackles and 32 shots. His Argentine teammate Emiliano Martinez received the best men's goalkeeper award of 2022. Meanwhile, manager Lionel Scaloni was named as the Best Men's Coach.

For the ceremony, Messi was accompanied by wife Antonela Roccuzzo, and his children stayed back at home. After receiving the award, Messi had an amusing message for his children, which left everyone in splits. He said, "Winning the World Cup is the most beautiful thing that has happened in my career. It’s a dream for many, but few can win it. I want to thank my family, the people of Argentina, as it will remain in our memories forever. I want to send a kiss to my children, who are watching this, Thiago, Mateo and Ciro, I love you. Now, go to bed!"

"This is an honour for me. I want to thank my colleagues, including my manager Scaloni, and we're here representing them all, as we would not be here without them. It recognises the role they played in what they achieved. It's been a crazy year for me. I have achieved my dream, after so much fighting and so much determination to win it", he added.

Argentina sealed a 4-2 win against France in penalties in the final, after the match ended in a 3-3 draw after extra-time. In a closely-fought final, the CONMEBOL side first took the lead in the 23rd-minute through captain Messi, who converted a penalty after Angel Di Maria was fouled in the French box. After that, a quick counter-attack in the 36th-minute saw Alexis MacAllister assist Di Maria, who made it 2-0.

With Argentina cruising to an easy win, Kylian Mbappe came to France's rescue and staged a comeback. Mbappe levelled proceedings within 97 seconds, scoring a penalty in the 80th-minute after Kolo Muani was brought down in the Argentine box. Then in the 81st-minute, Mbappe made it 2-2 with a stunning volley.

In extra-time, Messi made it 3-2 for Argentina in the 108th-minute, scoring after some poor defending. But Mbappe once again came to his side's rescue in the 118th-minute to make it 3-3. In what turned out to be a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez came out on top to deny Aurelien Tchouameni and Kingsley Coman as Argentina sealed a 4-2 victory.

Kolkata Thunderbolts confirmed a spot in the semi-finals of the second season of the Prime Volleyball League with a 15-12, 15-9, 15-14, 15-13, 10-15 win over Chennai Blitz at the Regional Sports Centre, Kochi on Monday. Vinit Kumar was named the player of the match for his power-packed performance.

Kolkata's defence ate Chennai's overpasses early on with ease. Vinit started making powerful spikes to trouble the Blitz' defence. Jose Verdi and Cody Caldwell combined in the middle to block Jobin Varghese, who was looking dangerous. Janshad kept setting up the balls on the platter for Vinit and the Thunderbolts took control.

With Akhin GS dominating from the middle, the Blitz covered the deficit. But Vinit stood tall and strong to deny Moyo's spike and ensured Kolkata maintain their lead.

A timely review from Cody saved the Thunderbolts an important point. Defensive errors from Blitz did not help their cause. With Moyo controlling the play, Chennai kept finding small openings to make a comeback. Just when Sita Rama started threatening from the middle, Abhilash Chaudhary came to life and added an extra flair to Kolkata's attacks.

Janshad and Vinit's pairing continued to trouble Chennai's defence, while Abhilash's block helped the Thunderbolts in tackling Jobin's attacks. A couple of unforced errors from Kolkata allowed the Blitz to get an opening. But a combination play started by Cody ended Chennai's resistance and the Thunderbolts picked up an easy win to confirm a spot in the semi-finals.

Bengaluru Torpedoes will be up against Calicut Heroes at the Regional Sports Centre (Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium) on the fifth day of the Kochi leg of the Prime Volleyball League at 1900 hrs IST on Tuesday, February 28.
